Online Language Learning
What’s important to consider in Online Language Learning
Extra DisciplineTeaching online only works for those who manage their time:
setting aside a few hours a day to study is critical.
MethodThe books and methods need to be developed specifically
for the Internet and by experts in language teaching.
LevelStudents who already have a familiarity with the language
(intermediate and advanced) tend to take better advantage of online courses than those who are starting.
Video Body language is important in teaching a new language:
for this reason classes held through videoconferencing are more effective.
MotivationIt is not easy to learn a language without the presence of a teacher.
Therefore, it is imperative that the school offers resources that encourage student who must not be left feeling unsupported.

Online Language Learning
Pitfalls of Online Language Learning
Despite the many advantages that online study there are several issues that may negatively impact the effectiveness of online study.
1. Excessive Flexibility – The largest online language courses offer classes 24 hours a day at regular intervals. This makes it so easy to choose a study time that students often set their language study period as a low or last priority in their schedule, which leads to hardly ever studying or not studying at all.
2. Difficulty to Adapt to ELearning – In some cultures especially Latin cultures, face-to-face interaction in person for learning is seen as more preferable than online learning using technology. Those who feel this way tend to have a negative perception of distance learning and feel it may not work for them.
3. Sense of Isolation – Students that study online may feel isolated and dismotivated if the school doesn’t offer ways for them to interact with other students and their own teachers or coaches in the school.
4. Technical Problems – The speed and reliability of broadband internet is not uniform and there are still many cities around Brazil the world with frequent drops in signal or insufficient speed that interfere with the smooth operation of online classes. A student who experiences frequent problems of this nature may conclude it is not effective to study online.
"The time savings is what motivated me to choose an
online course. Exercises I could do on the iPad during lunch, for
example. Flexibility of time, another positive point, played
against me, however: just leaving course in the background. Finally,
I gave up.“
Fernanda Simon, 29, university student

• Global English Advisor of the British Council, a nonprofit organization maintained by the government of Great Britain in order to disseminate British culture around the world.
• Many sectors of the economy and our lives have changed because
of technology. It is inevitable, then, that these advances also come to education. There is no doubt that the internet plays an important role in the process of learning a foreign language.
What we learned from this:
• One. Motivation: Some people have the privilege of having the best teachers and the best tools and still not learn the language. Others learn the language, despite the lack of resources. The technology is therefore irrelevant if there is no motivation on the part of the student himself.
• 2nd. Social Interaction: There is plenty of evidence that in some cultures the social interaction in the learning environment is essential. For these groups, the online experience may not be enough in the process - even if it is supplemented by videoconferencing systems or other forms of virtual interaction.
• 3rd. Social Connectivity: The best English courses know how to take advantage of the growth of social connectivity, offering opportunities for collaborative learning by putting students in touch with other students and opening a path for dialogue and discussion over the internet. These are essential aspects in the teaching process.

TIRF Report 2012
TIRF REPORT 2012 - Conclusions
The future of language education tends to be increasingly customized to the specific needs of each student, according to a study by the International Foundation for Research on English Language Teaching (TIRF) released last July 11th, 2012 at the Brazilian British Centre, in São Paulo.
The survey data, collected in 20 countries, including Brazil, pointed to the "growing specification and customization in teaching English," and the use of multimedia and online tools to supplement learning and the integration of language training and professional, in the case of immigrant workers.
In all case studies, the awareness of students about cultural differences and the role of culture in communication is very present. The elaboration of teaching projects and the use of real-world materials are also cited in the reported cases as well developing student independence in language courses is another concern.

Building bonds between teacher and student
The leading online courses treat teaching like fast food where the student studies with the
teacher available at the moment which leads to contact with different teacher almost
every class.
This impedes the building of affinity and connection between student and
teacher. We believe that effective learning requires a bond of continuity of contact. We keep the students with
the same teacher until they decide they would like a different teacher.
Primetime English
We offer monthly coaching sessions where our language coaches confer with the student’s teacher to talk about the students’ needs and current difficulties with the language.
The coach prepares suggestions about sites and resources to consult and use in order to overcome the obstacles.
The coaching suggestions are sent to the student and he’s invited to schedule an online meeting with his coach. This coach has the purpose of accelerating the learning process by working directly on specific issues and motivating the student to renew dedication to his studies.
