Primary seal and signature LogoThe University seal and signature used as shown below are the primary University logo. The seal and signature logo should be used on all official documents, external correspondence and institutional promotion.

secondary MarksSecondary marks are variations on the primary logo developed for visual communications when: 1.)spaceislimitedorreadabilityisanissue(e.g.Webbanners);2.)theaudienceknowsIWUwell(e.g.faculty,staff,alumni);or3.)thefullinstitutionalnamehasbeenclearlyestablishedinotherways(e.g. the headline of an ad or poster) and the mark is used primarily as a reinforcing signature.

The abbreviated Illinois Wesleyan signature excludes the word “university” and can be used in a variety of small space and informal communications.

The seal may be used without the signature on: diplomas or official certificates; on the Web; on covers of invitations, announcement cards or folders; in PowerPoints; on ban-ners and signs; in advertising; and on promotional merchandise. When the seal is used as the primary means by which the University name is communicated, care should be takensothatitisinasizethatcanberead.(Approvedcoloroptionsshownbelow)

The only time to use the signature without the seal would be as a secondary identifier or ad-dress element on the back of a publication/invitation that uses the full logo on the front cover. In such instances, the full university name should appear on a single line in Minion caps and small caps, as show below.

Motto

The motto is an optional element that can be used like a tagline with the seal alone or sealandabbreviatedsignature.InmostinstancesthemottoshouldappearinEnglishand in italics.

departmental/Unit LogosUniversity departments/units may use the seal along with their unit designation as their departmen-tal logo. These unit logos will differ from the primary and secondary University marks by the use of caps and lower case lettering for the school/department/unit name.

spirit MarksA modified version of Tommy Titan and the IW or IWU initials can be used as school spirit marks or graphic elements for internal, informal, admissions or alumni communications. These are also appropriate merchandise marks. Tommy Titan or the initials should not be used in place of the seal and signature logo for formal institutional or academic communications.

When the full or abbreviated signature is used on merchandise, strong serif fonts should be used and Illinois should never appear larger or be more dominant than Wesleyan.

Campaign MarksThese logos are restricted for use by the Office of the President and the Advancement Office. They aretobeusedduringthecampaignperiod(2009-14)tocreatecampaignawarenessorincampaign-related projects.

athletics MarksTommy Titan, the football W and IW logo used by baseball are reserved for the exclusive use of Titan athletics.
