The Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head-Neck Nurses, Inc.Volume 40 | Number 5
December 2018
Dear Colleagues: Just last month we held our 42nd Annual Congress and Nursing Symposium at the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia. I have received many wonderful comments praising the conference. We started with an outstanding keynote speaker, Carolyn Jones who inspired us with her videos, pictures and stories portraying
real nurses. The Congress Education Committee developed and organized wonderful topics and speakers throughout the meeting, great poster presentations and a good time was had by all. Our theme being Building the Best…ORL Nursing was dominant throughout and I hope it encourages everyone to return to their departments to continue to build the best within themselves and their co-workers. Highlights of the Opening Ceremony were recognition and awards given to members that have volunteered their time to provide for the workings of the organization. Recognition was given to the Congress Education Committee, Atlanta Chapter, Executive Director and Administrative Secretary, SOHN Board, Committees, Special Interest Groups, Chapters, Social Media Coordinator, Editorial Board, Council of Past Presidents, National Certifying Board for ORL Nursing and the Ear, Nose and Throat Nursing Foundation. It is from dedicated members that we have been able to accomplish so much with so little.

As this busy year draws to a close, I wish to thank you for your support and encouragement throughout this past year and look forward to another year of challenge and success. Continue to Build the Best in ORL Nursing.

Post Congress Reflections
ORL nurses from around the world and across the country gathered at the Atlanta Peachtree Plaza Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia on October 5 – 8, 2018 to celebrate the Best in ORL nursing. The SOHN Congress and Nursing Symposium was a resounding success and we have heard a great deal of praise from those in attendance. All of those presenting were prepared and sessions were well attended. Thank you to the 2018 Congress Education Committee – Mary Huntoon, Michele Farrington, Maggie Chesnutt, Sara Wheeler, Carolyn Waddington, Anne Bigelow and Sandra Schwartz. Your organization and enthusiasm was key to a complete success. Thank you to the VIPs for helping to run a smooth day to day process, to the SOHN Board for their support , to the Special Interest Group Leaders and to the Committee Chairs. A special note of gratitude goes out to the many speakers and coordinators. We appreciate your time and dedication devoted to ORL nursing continuing education. From the Opening Ceremony to the Closing Speaker each presentation was excellent.
Keynote Speaker, Carolyn Jones – photographer and filmmaker enthralled those in attendance with her stories of the American Nurse. The audience was given an in-depth view into a day in the life of nurses employed in a maximum-security prison, a nursing home, a maternal health department, a rural community in Kentucky, and the military. Topics such as end-of-life care, veteran health, and rural area care were shown from a personal perspective. The American Nurse aims to elevate the voices of nurses in this country by capturing their personal stories through photography and film. This was a standing ovation presentation!
Health Policy and Advocacy Guest Speaker, Dr. Anne McKenzie-Brown presented an excellent update on the “Opioid Epidemic”. Closing Speaker, Sandra Leake challenged the audience to embrace “resilience” in order to overcome adversity and discover life’s purpose.
And, who could forget the Outrageous ENT-NF Benefit Raffle with more prizes than ever or the exciting evening out at Agatha’s Mystery Theater? Perhaps a star was born that evening as SOHN members took to the stage. The ENT-NF yearly wellness event, the Stepping Forward for the Foundation Walk did not disappoint. Anne Bigelow and her walk assistants led
participants around Centennial Park and other noteworthy sites.
A giant SOHN thank you is extended to the SOHN Atlanta Chapter. The SOHN Southern Belles exuded charm and grace throughout the convention as our host chapter. They graciously donated the lovely blue tote bags filled with survival and fun items for the convention.
