• 1951 transistor invented by William Shockley, John Bardeen, Walter Brattain
• 1952 Ed Quirk (my dad) sets up first production line for transistors at Transistor Products Incorporated in Brighten MA (used germanium)
• 1954 Texas Instruments produces silicon transistor
• 1956 Shockley comes home to Palo Alto to take care of his mother and founds Shockley Semiconductors to produce transistors
• Most Silicon Valley companies founded by engineers who Shockley recruited
• Would we have Silicon Valley if Shockley’s mother had not needed care?

• 1957 “Traitorous Eight” leave Shockley Semiconductor because of his harsh management style
• 1957 “Traitorous Eight” get funding from Sherman Fairchild to Found Fairchild Semiconductor
• Late 1950s Shockley offers job to my Dad, Ed Quirk
• Dad was excited that the inventor of the transistor wanted him, but told me Shockley was a failed business man, who he could not work for.
• 1968 Fairchild’s Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore found Intel
