REFLECTION Stewardship
“Go, eat rich foods and drink sweet drinks, and allot portions to those who had nothing prepared…” (Nehemiah 8:10)
Ezra’s instructions to the people show us that God does not forbid
us from enjoying the good things in life.
He wants us to be happy!
However, God expects us to be grateful for all that He has given
us and to generously share our blessings with those who are in
need without expecting anything in return.

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up." Did you grow up in a small town? Whenever you see stories of tight-knit communities, a common refrain is that everybody knows everybody and that's very
difficult to change. If you leave and return, people expect you to be and act a certain way, and it's strange for them if you do not. In today's
Gospel, we see that Jesus was already moving "in the power of the Spirit and news of him spread throughout the whole region. He...was praised by all." His ministry has begun! News of his growing popularity must have
proceeded him to Nazareth. Upon his arrival, he "went according to his custom into the synagogue on
the Sabbath day." For the first few moments, he is what they expect - their hometown boy returning to pay his respects. As was common of
men at the time, he takes a turn reading a passage of Sacred Scripture. It is a bold passage, one he selects intentionally. "He unrolled the scroll and
found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me." After reading about holy anointings, liberation for the poor and
prisoners, and physical healings, Jesus does the unthinkable. "'Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.'"
We are all called to imitate Christ wherever we are. This might mean doing the unexpected! All too often we're content with the daily status
quo, and so are the people around us. When we take a stand for Christian values, change our lifestyle to reflect the Gospel, and work for justice in society, we may make others uncomfortable. But Jesus doesn't call us to the same life we lived yesterday or the year before that. He is calling all
of us - each and every one of us - to deeper conversion of heart. No matter what other people expect, will you love in the Spirit of the
Lord today?

THE WAY TO HAPPINESS
“The way to happiness: Keep your heart free from hate, your mind from worry. Live simply, expect little, give much. Scatter sunshine, forget self, think of others. Try this for a week and you will be surprised.” ~ Norman Vincent Peale
St. Paul wrote to the Corinthians that we are all members of the Body of Christ. Each and every one of us is a unique part. We cannot all be feet. We cannot all be hands. We cannot all be ears or eyes or fingers or toes. We are all unique and necessary in the Body of Christ.
Some people, sadly, try to be what they are not. They look at the gifts and talents of others and lament that they do not share in them. They allow themselves to become jealous and envious. Often, those feelings lead them down darker paths than they would have imagined for themselves.
Norman Vincent Peale reminded us of something very simple: happiness lies within our grasp. We do not have to try to be someone else. We should be content with who and what we are. In that contented state, we easily can be a people of love who live simply, expect little, and give much. If we are happy with ourselves, we will be able to spread sunshine, warmth, and love to those around us.
Why, then, do we often feel that we need to be someone other than who we are? Is it the world around us that speaks these things to us or is it a voice from within? Is that voice from within legitimate or is it the all-too-familiar voice of the enemy?
Make no mistake about it: the devil is never happy when we live as one, united in love and with our God. The enemy does everything within his power to make us think that we are not special, that we are not good enough for God to love. That causes us to want to be different, to want what others have. That causes grief and strife among us. That fuels jealousy and envy.
The devil could care less about us. All that he wants to do is make sure that our soul never makes it to our true reward: eternity with God. He will say and do anything necessary to sway us from our goal. Do not let him win. St. Peter wrote to the Christian community: “Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Resist him, solid in your faith.”
Learn all that you can about God and the love that He has for you. Lean on God when times are rough and know that He will always help you. All you need to do is ask. Live, content in that promise, and spread sunshine to others!
FAITH ACTION: Set aside grudges and live as a child of God this day, spreading His love.
ON THE LIGHTER SIDE Catholic Schools Week deserves some Catholic humor
Q. How do you make Holy Water? A. You boil the hell out of it.
Q. What do you call a sleepwalking priest? A. A roamin’ Catholic.
Q. Why did the priest giggle during his homily? A. He had Mass hysteria.
Q. Do you want to know about the drama at the convent? A. It’s nun of your business!
GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN GOT YOU DOWN?
The government shutdown has taken a toll on a lot of people, including many of our parishioners. If your job has been affected, if you have
been furloughed and are having a tough time making ends meet, please contact the parish office (836-8610) to see if there is any assistance we might be able to give to you.
I BELIEVE I believe in Catholic schools. That was one of the reasons, shortly after my ordination, that I told the bishops of our diocese that I would always consider an assignment at a parish that has a school. There is something special about providing a faith-based education to our parish children. It gives them an opportunity to view their world differently, hopefully more responsibly. Our graduates have gone on to higher education equipped to face what comes their way and to contribute to the student bodies at their schools. As we observe Catholic Schools Week this week, I give a shout-out to all of our administrators, faculty, and staff for the work that they do, to all of our parents for the sacrifices that they make to send their children to our school, and to all the students who work so hard in order to make a difference in our world. I am proud of you all and am glad to be able to be here to support the good work of our parish and our school.

From Your Parish Synod Committee Evangelization Has Its Rewards!
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain
mercy.” Show mercy this week by performing
one or more of the spiritual works of mercy. Admonish sinners. Instruct the uninformed.
Counsel the doubtful. Comfort the sorrowful. Be patient with
those in error. Forgive offenses. Pray for the living & the dead. Evangelize by practicing these acts of mercy.
How will you share your faith this week? The subject of evangelization makes many people uncomfortable
and many feel they don’t know enough about their faith to talk to others about it. Others are willing, but aren’t sure what they
should do, so they avoid it. Find easy ways to evangelize above. Help strengthen your own faith while bringing others to the
Church, or back to the Church.

Catholics Coming Home Catholics leave the church or drift away for a variety of reasons, some due to unhappiness about Church teachings or anger with a member or members of the clergy. Others never really intended
to break with the Church, but simply got into the bad habit of not going and wake up one day to discover it has been years. Those
of us who are active in our faith need to make a concerted personal effort to welcome these individuals back into being
active members of the Catholic Church again.

Vocations Committee We pray each Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel for an increase in seminarians and priests, which our diocese and country both
desperately need. Few people have been joining us and your prayers are very much
needed for this important request. And, remember the devotion to the Blessed Sacrament.
Please join us on Tuesdays. And please pray at home, too!
Eucharistic Ministers Needed Our parish needs Eucharistic Ministers to serve at the Lord’s
table at all the weekend Masses. Please contact Deacon Dan Zurawski at (219) 836-8610, # 2316 or [email protected] if you are interested in serving
the Lord and your parish in this capacity.
Launderer Needed Our parish is in need of another launderer for parish linens.
This easy task is required only twice a year and entails ironing linens to adorn our church altar.
Won’t you please help? Call the Parish Office at (219) 836-8610 to learn more or volunteer. Thank you in advance!
Attention Parishioners If you are a St. Thomas More parishioner
and are experiencing financial difficulties due to a work
furlough related to the government shut-down, please contact the Parish Office at (219) 836-8610.
Through our parish ministries, we may be able to offer some assistance until situations resume to normal.

Live Christ, Share Christ Movement
All are invited to join us!
Join us for our next gathering on Saturday, February 9
th at 10:00 a.m.
St. Thomas More Weis Center Guest Speaker:
Fr. Mike Yadron
The Live Christ, Share Christ Movement carries the endorse-ments of Pope Benedict, our own Bishop Hying & Fr. Mike, and has been effective in other countries around the world.
The Live Christ, Share Christ Movement was designed to help rekindle and strengthen our faith through the power of the Holy Spirit, so that we may know Christ and
love him more deeply. In response to God’s love, we can share our faith and love by
the way we live as an example to family and friends.
Live Christ, Share Christ Testimonial I first experienced the Live Christ Share Christ movement
at their seminar in January of this year. It was a great blessing to me. The wonderful speakers and
musicians truly inspired me. I hope and pray that this movement will spread in our parish and become a blessing
to many others, too. Cindy Keilman

St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry We carefully prepared for Thanksgiving and joined our loved
ones in saying thanks to the Lord for the gifts he bestowed, and the spiritual support he provided! Advent came, when we
anticipated and prepared for the birth of Christ. We celebrated Christmas, thanking the Lord for sending his Son.
You, the parishioners and many groups at St. Thomas More took it one step further!
By generously supporting the St. Vincent de Paul Society, you helped us provide 55 families at Thanksgiving and 62 families at
Christmas with baskets to fill their holiday tables. Additionally, gifts were donated by the children of St. Thomas More School and others to provide Christmas presents for 75 children! Once again, the parishioners at St. Thomas More
showed true Christian spirit by providing for the less fortunate. We, of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, would like to thank all of our supporters for your generous donations. Your help brought
sheet joy to those we serve during the holidays. Thanks you for your generous support to provide for others!
