2 PRESCHOOL SCHOOL YEAR 2016-2017 WRAP UP

The children who are part of our Preschool had a very busy year. They learned so many new things from their teachers Mandy Engelbrecht, Kimberly Neubauer and Josee Wilson and assistant, Shannon Evans. Eight of them will be moving on to kindergarten and they are ready for this experience. They visited the kindergarten at Moreau Heights, where they

loved everything but especially the playground! Almost all the other children will be returning for another year of Preschool, to be joined by new students in the Fall. (All our classes are full for Fall except the 3s – there is room for two more there.)

Some of the things they have done this year include: participated in sanctuary time each week, did a Christmas and Easter pageant, had Donuts with Dad and Muffins with Mom, learned more academics to get ready for school, went to parks and the Runge Center, had a hayride and hot dog roast, watched chicks hatch, sang for Retired Adults Fellowship and did

mission work. In November the children and their families donated a huge grocery cart of food for the Samaritan Center, and during Lent the students collected about $500 to help purchase water filtration buckets

for children in Peru so that they would have clean water. (One family had a lemonade and cookie stand in their neighborhood and collected $300 See Pastor Dave’s note on Page 8.) They celebrated birthdays and holidays. They grew so much! The staff wishes the very best to the children moving on to kindergarten and will see most of the others in August!

K-PLUS SCHOOL YEAR 2016-2017 WRAP UP

K+ has had a very busy and productive year. They have had field trips a couple times every week, visited the library every month, had sanctuary time weekly, worked with their Smartboard daily, read with their reading buddies, visited the Runge Center several times, and took ice skating lessons. They had a special Thanksgiving feast and Valentine treat for the staff and a Christmas pageant for their families.

They have grown so much in their academic learning, their love of God, and how to behave appropriately for school! We are so proud of them and all they have done this year! A special thanks to Kelly Bone, teacher, and Ann Hanson, assistant for their daily love and care for these children.

3 A Note From the Pastor Dear Partners in Mission and Ministry,

June is a time of robust worship, hands on learning and exciting mission for First Presbyterian Church. We will move to a single morning worship service at 9:30 am on Sunday mornings and continue our 5:00 pm Sunday Night Live worship services each Sunday evening. Summer is a great time to get reacquainted with your friends in faith who worship in the other morning service, as we combine the worship services. It is also a time to pray for the mission and ministry of Christ at First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson City. This June we will be acting out the words of Jesus to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them all that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you to the close of the age.” (Matt 28: 19-20)

We will be sending out several mission teams this summer, as well as engaging in mission right here at First Presbyterian Church. Dave Henry and Michaela Krause will be heading to Peru to continue our mission partnership with the church in Tamshiyacu. On June 4th, Pentecost, we will commission Megan Weber as our new Christian Education Director. We will be saying thank you to Joan Erickson who served as our Interim Christian Education Director during the past year as Megan and Joan lead our Vacation Bible School “Heroes” from June 5th through June 9th. On June 6th many of us will be going to another mission outpost, Covenant Point Camp for a Presbytery meeting. We will be celebrating the ministry and mission contributions of Carolyn Becker, Susie Jones and Lou Brydon as they receive the Evelyn Bedell Award from our Presbytery. We will be welcoming the Bike and Build Riders to our church on June 18th and our own Josh Hickman will be part of the ride across America to build houses for people in need. They will share in our Sunday Night Live meal with us. On June 27th we will be sending our youth off for a mission trip to Hungary. Zac Wolfe, Dan Carr, Megan Weber and Siri Kemp will be chaperoning the group of 10 youth from Missouri Union Presbytery (Seven of the Youth are from First Presbyterian Jefferson City.). At the end of June we will be kicking off our Food-4-Kids program. Please see Shelley Swoyer to sign up for this wonderful way to follow Jesus’ command “Feed my sheep.” It is an exciting time for worship, education and mission this summer.

Blessings and peace,

Pastor Rob

6 RAISE THE ROOF (SOON!)

On the last weekend of April, following a torrential rain storm, a new leak in the mezzanine ceiling above Knox Hall was discovered. With recent sequential weekends of rain, many think our Raise the Roof Capital Campaign is quite timely. The Capital Campaign Committee is looking forward to having the funds to replace that roof!

But the Campaign will do more than provide the much-needed roof replacement. It will touch many other ministries both in our building and around the world.

For example, our youth are looking forward to having a reliable church bus. As Liz Lehmen describes, “It really exciting knowing we are raising funds for a new bus. Our busses contribute so much, from taking us on our summer trips, to taking our younger youth to camp. It's important to have nice working busses and it's so exciting knowing we are raising money for that!”

Also, the members of our congregation who volunteer for Habitat are looking forward to sponsoring another “Presbyterian” Habitat House. So says Tom Carr: “I'm pleased that the "Raise the Roof" campaign includes continuing FPC's 35 year commitment to River City Habitat for Humanity's home building ministry.”

But all of this takes the support of our entire congregation. If you’ve not yet made a pledge or gift, there is still time. Large or small, every contribution will help us meet our full goal of $240,000. We’re all in this together!

The Capital Campaign Committee: Jim McAdams (Chair), Sharon Keating, Walt Vandelicht, Anne Schneider, Steve Brennaman, Holly Nunn, Todd Larivee and Jennifer Hickman.

First Presbyterian is again hosting the Food 4 Kids program this summer. Every day from June 26th to August 16th, teams from seven local churches and Scholastic, Inc., will be in the kitchen making sandwiches, filling lunch bags and preparing lunches for delivery to four sites in low income neighborhoods. Member of First Presbyterian serve as weekly coordinators, organizing the volunteers, directing the activities, and ensuring all Food Bank requirements are met. Several area businesses and agencies also help provide teams for delivering the lunches. The Food Bank of Central Missouri, with the support of the United Way and local donations, provides the funding for food and supplies for 120 lunches each day. A free lunch is available to anyone under 18 who comes to a site.

First Presbyterian will be packing and delivering lunches the week of August 7th to 11th from approximately 10:30 to 11:45 for packers and 11:45 to 12:45 for deliverers. Sue Gray will be the weekly coordinator and Anne Schneider the coordinator for finding and scheduling our volunteers. Check your calendars and plan to schedule some time to help support this great local mission. Bring along your kids or grandkids to help too. It’s a fun intergenerational service activity. Watch for sign up posters in Knox Hall and bulletin announcements in late June.

We anticipate that there will be more than 120 kids per day needing lunches by the end of the summer. When we run out of lunches we give out snack packs consisting of nonperishable food, so the kids at least have something to eat. Donations of individual size peanut butter crackers, apple sauce, canned fruit, macaroni and cheese mix, pasta in a can, granola bars, pop tarts, cheese crackers, raisins or other dried fruit, single serving cereals, or protein bars in kid friendly flavors will be used for the snack packs. Thank you for the food or monetary donations that enable us to fill the snack packs. --Shelley Swoyer

FROM THE BOARD OF DEACONS

Here is recent news from our Deacons:

During April & May cards and notes were sent to recent visitors, to those in the hospital, and to the families experiencing the transition of a family member from this life to life eternal with God, including the families of Frank Nesmeyer, and the family of Abiathar Nabos whose brother Joram Nabos made that transition. Baby blankets were given to Ezra Zion Ratcliff (daughter of Melissa Petty and Daniel Ratcliff - through grandparents Kevin and Karen Myers); Adalynn Ahren Mills (daughter of Stephanie and Jerry Mills -through grandparents Steve and Carla Ahrens); Eleanor Rae Stotler (daughter of Abby and Kevin Stotler – through grandparents Scott and Crista Johnston), Xaiden William Patton (son of Chris and Elizabeth Patton – through grandparents Bob Watson & Kathy and Tom Werdehausen) and Rayelyn Jennings Cole (daughter of Jared and Kayla Myers Cole – through grandparents Kevin and Karen Myers.)

Deacons continued to purchase food items, stock the Food Pantry and fill bags of food to be given to members of our community struggling with food insecurity – nearly 50 families each month. We also provided medications and household items and supplies for families in need; assisted with rent for families threatened with eviction and helped with utility bills. We also purchased a washing machine and clothes dryer for a family through the Habitat Restore.

Our New Members Committee held a New Member Dinner for Friday, April 28th with four new members and several Deacons and our pastors present.

Our Deacons will not meet in June and will meet next on Tuesday, July 11 at 7:00 pm in the Chapel (one week later than normal.) Committees are urged to meet at 6:30 pm that evening if needed. Please pray for our Deacons as they lead us in ministries of service and compassion.

“……AND A LITTLE CHILD SHALL LEAD THEM.” (Isaiah 11:6)

Our Preschool teachers, Josee Wilson, Kimberly Neubauer, Mandy Englebrecht and Shannon Evans teach our children with love and patience, with words and actions – teaching kindness and generosity. This was demonstrated in an amazing way this Spring as they talked to the children about the need for clean drinking water in Peru – and the reality that children were drinking dirty, polluted river water. They encouraged the children to bring some coins to help buy a water filtration system for one family (about $45.00 total cost). The children and their families responded – by late April they had collected over $100 – enough for not just one, but two filtration systems. Then one of the families – led by their two children in our Preschool set up a lemonade and cookie stand in their neighborhood and raised nearly $350 for more buckets – and more donations came in – and currently the total stands at $509.13 – enough to purchase clean water for 11 families. God has blessed these children and their families, and they are reaching out to bless others. Praise be to God – and thank you Preschool teachers, children and families!

--Pastor Dave Henry

ADDITIONAL HANDICAP PARKING

We now have three additional Handicap Parking spaces available on Sunday mornings through the collaboration of the Facilities Committee and Deacons. Each Sunday morning our Deacon Usher for 8:30 worship (9:30 in the

summer) will place handicap parking bags over the meters for three parking spaces on Madison Street – two north of the alley and one south of the alley between the church and Hawthorn Bank. We hope this will provide the additional handicap parking we need to accommodate all who gather to worship God.

9 Missions & Ministries OUR SOCIAL JUSTICE MINISTRY TEAM

Along with the Capital Area Interfaith Alliance and the Clergy Caucus of Faith Voices for Jefferson City our Social Justice Ministry Team is seeking to form a coalition to collaboratively support refugee/immigrant families in our community. The response from the congregation for the Capital Campaign to “Raise the Roof” has been nothing short of amazing and as we are enthused by the Spirit to make the goals of the campaign and the church a reality. Thank you so much for all who have already contributed to the Capital Campaign. We are over 87% of the way there but now comes the hard part and that is closing the deal to get to 100%. The recent heavy rains served to highlight the need for the new roof as some

“small” leaks reappeared in Knox Hall. While these are minor and did no significant damage, it all goes to remind us of the major damage that can occur with a protracted heavy downpour with wind and hail. Ideally, we would not want to start the roof replacement until we have the entire allocation in cash, so we are appealing to the congregation to help us get to the fill $240,000 goal. Your continued support and prayers will help us get to our goal of 100% of the campaign goal pledged by 1 July so we can replace our roof, enhance our educational technology, replace our 14 year old church van, support the Habitat for Humanity and continue to support our foreign mission work through helping our partner congregations meet their transportation needs. You can find pledge cards in the pews each service on Sundays, in the church office and at selected locations in Knox Hall. If you have not pledged a contribution to the campaign please pray and reflect on how important the items included in the campaign to the future of our congregation and the mission, both local and internationally. All gifts are welcome and will help us reach our goals together. We want to invite everyone to participate in the campaign to ensure the future mission and ministry of Christ at First Presbyterian.
