HAILINGS FROM THE HELM By Cdr Kara Dalkey, P
Happy November, if that isn’t a contradiction in terms for us boating folk.
I hope you all are making headway in winterizing your watercraft as we
face the Long Dark of winter ahead.
Even though good opportunities for getting out on the water become
scarcer this season, there’s still much to look forward to. The annual Des-
sert Auction is coming up at our Nov. 4th dinner meeting, and the mem-
bers always serve up scrumptious delights for us to have jolly bidding
wars over. Even if you’re dieting, nothing says you can’t pick up a treat
to serve at your workplace or next party, or just share with your table-
mates as soon as you win your bid. Come with your appetites and full
wallets or checkbooks, because the Dessert Auction puts the fun in fund-
raising!
As for the dinner itself on the 4th, Collier will again be the caterer and
there were only good things said about the beef brisket they served last
month so I can hardly wait to seem what savory repast they offer this time.
Next month I should have a report on the D16 Fall Conference, happening
in Tacoma the last weekend of October. Anyone of you can attend, so if
you want to hobnob with members of other squadrons in the region, these
conferences are a good place to do so.
At the last E-board meeting, it was all about Merit Marks, and a large
number of Poverty Bay folks will be getting them for all your great efforts
at helping out the squadron. Want a merit mark? Volunteer! I be-
queathed the Change of Watch files to our Exec Mary Quande so that she
can start getting ready for next year.
Fun things to look forward to in the months ahead…the Christmas Party in
December. And we may have some boats go out to follow the Argosy
Christmas ships when they come to Des Moines and Redondo.
See you on November 4th!
Is your mouth watering yet?
Are you craving your next sweet fix???
PBSPS DESSERT AUCTION 4 NOVEMBER 2010
It’s that time of year again when we get our sweet fix and then some at the
annual dessert auction. Bring your appetite and your wallet and let’s make
this year’s auction a memorable and fun event.
Come join the fun and help raise money for the squadron’s education fund.
Remember, watch your hands, facial expressions, body movements and
just plain sitting there, as an eye twitch could be interpreted as a bid by our
famous and fabulously funny auctioneer.
Don’t miss out on this chance to fill your pantry for the upcoming holidays
and just for the taste of it!!!!!

FELLOWSHIP FROM FRIENDSHIP By Lt/C Mary Quande, P
My reflections of the squadron:
Duane and I were out at dinner last week with some friends. We were
talking about the squadron and our summer trips. She said that it sounds
like we have a lot of fun. The next day I began to reflect on our squadron
experiences.
We bought our first boat the second year we were married and we have
been boating ever since. We have boated with many people throughout
the years, but most of our boating buddies have moved on to other activi-
ties. Dave and Sue Burke asked us to join a rendezvous at Fair Harbor.
Bob & Barbara Filiatreau and Duane and I all went together. We were
made to feel very welcome, were asked to join all the activities and eve-
ryone made sure we participated. We joined the squadron shortly thereaf-
ter. Why did we join the squadron? We have made many friends, the
classes have given us a greater confidence in our boating and we now
practice safe boating.
I think our squadron is very special because of our unique members. I
believe that no matter what your personality, your job title or your inter-
ests are, you will find someone to share your thoughts. Many of the
members we first met do not participate as much any more, so we have
become the established members now. As established members, it is our
turn to make sure we welcome the new members as we were welcomed. I
look forward to seeing all the members, both established and new, at the
dessert auction Nov. 4th, just one more fun reason to belong to PBSPS.

FROM ANDROMEDA’S COCKPIT By Lt/C Tom Spohn, P
In lieu of an article from Tom, I have found the follow-
ing excerpt from an article about boating that says it all.
From the internet @ http://www.discoverboating.com
Boating Improves Quality of Life
It’s a proven fact that recreational boating goes a long ways towards
improving your quality of life. The minute you start to move forward
on a boat, you’ll notice how easy it is to leave your troubles be-
hind. Recreational boating fun provides a constructive outlet for en-
tertainment that reduces stress and provides enriching opportunities
for self discovery, whether it’s learning how to water ski or simply
enjoying the warm glow of an evening sunset.
Boating Fun Helps you Bond with Friends and Family
Fifty four percent of all households, in a study by the National Ma-
rine Manufacturers Association, listed fishing as their favorite boat-
ing activity (followed by cruising and relaxing with family and
friends). In other words, to many people the best part about boating
doesn’t revolve around the latest waterskiing tricks or the number of
fish caught- the best part of boating is simply the opportunities it pro-
vides for boating fun with friends and family. Recreational boating is
quality time spent away from the television set and the video games,
creating an atmosphere that brings people together and creates fond
memories to last a lifetime.
Boating Helps Reduce Stress
We can’t stress the statistics enough - numerous studies have shown
that a little bit of boating fun each day can go a long way towards re-
ducing stress. In fact, a National Marine Manufacturers Association
survey of over 1,000 American households listed boating in the top-
three of all stress-relieving activities.

SAFE BOATING
THROUGH EDUCATION By Lt/C Rick Edel, JN
Marine Electrical Systems (MES) is almost over. The qualifying exam
will be given on Nov. 10th. The large class has learned a lot about boat
electrical systems and about lightning and electrical current-caused cor-
rosion – whether galvanic or stray current.
After MES finishes we will roll right into the follow on course Marine
Communications Systems (MCS). Mr. Ron Davidson will be the lead
instructor. This class will cover all things from VHF radios, cell phones,
walkie-talkies, offshore single side band radios and even satellite tele-
phones. There are 9 chapters and all will learn how to be proficient radio
users as well as understand the principles of radiofrequency communica-
tions. Almost all the current class members have already expressed inter-
est in continuing on and taking it. The holidays may affect the schedule a
little bit but since there is even a third module – Electronic Navigation
Systems – if we don’t get started this year, we will run too late in the first
quarter of next year.
We started our Piloting 2010 course on schedule. This is also a larger
class with 11 student-members. We just started so everyone is lost in the
jargon and the complexity of learning how to go from point A to point B
(and on to C, D, and whatever) on the water where there are no roads and
highways. Most student members are feeling challenged working with
the course plotters and dividers and haven’t gotten the “feel” of using it
all together yet. P/C Martha Battles, JN, Bob Swarm, SN, Dave Sharp,N,
and yours truly, Rick Edel, are teaching the course, which runs up until
Dec 21st.
The fall ABC classes were very small. We don’t know where the boaters
went – was it the early fall or the less than summery summer? Anyway,
those that did take the course from Pat Foley, SN, and P/C Bob Miller,
SN got a lot of personal attention and I’m sure came away with a head
full of good boating safety knowledge.
(Continued from page 10)
Since USPS Headquarters authorized the use of SailAngle as our organi-
zation’s network, I have started using it to provide course students with
access to the slides we instructors show during the classes. This is to help
the student members when reading and doing homework, especially
when they have a question, cannot find the answer in the book and say to
themselves “I remember seeing the answer on a slide in class.” Now they
can look them up and use the slides as refreshers in the comfort of their
own home.
At the Fall conference, there was another meeting talking about Boat Op-
erator Certification – what you get from on-the-water training. There are
four of us in Poverty Bay SPS that are in process or completing our certi-
fication. We have to finish that and pass another check before we our-
selves can be on-the-water teachers and certifiers for fellow squadron
members.
That’s about it for now. As always, don’t hesitate to call or email me or
the assistant education officer, Dave Sharp with any questions.

Again, it was an early retreat to the docks for most everyone, but a few of
us stayed up by the fire for a pinochle tournament. The Ranger must have
thought we were having a naughty time and made us break it up at 10 pm
(I’m quite sure my team would have won).
Our Sunday morning breakfast feast was amazing. There were home-
made cinnamon rolls, hash browns, chicken, sausages, egg dishes, French
toast dish, fruit, sweet breads and even cold cereal. We billed it as a re-
placement to the Friday night appetizers, but there was enough food to
last us all day. Unfortunately most of us had to leave and head back to
our home port. We left one lonely tug to fend for themselves. All in all it
was a nice time, however Terry and I have decided that we have hosted
Blake enough times and look forward to someone else taking it over next
year. We did get lots of positive comments about straying from the nor-
mal traditions and hope to see others continuing to shake it up.
Please see photos of the rendezvous (complements of Marsha Bailey,
who graciously took pictures for me) on page 15.

Blake Island Rendezvous By Nancy Scott, P
The lazy days of a seemingly endless summer were enjoyed by all atten-
dees of the October 1st - 3rd rendezvous at Blake Island. The guest list
went back and forth the week before the event, but the final answer was
19 boats in attendance.
Terry and I wanted to stray a little bit off the normal Friday night appetiz-
ers and with the help of Terry & Dane Fantz and Paul & Liz Ellis, we
served up grilled cheese sandwiches and a soup melee. It is always amaz-
ing that you can dump so many different varieties of soup into 1 pot and
come out with the tastiest conglomeration. Thank you to all of you for
reading your email and showing up with your cans of soup. Friday night
was an early turn-in, most of us were in need of sound dreams but those
who stayed out were treated to the night sky lit up like a sea fire.
Saturday morning we awoke to an autumn mist but once it burned off and
the sea eagles cleared the air, we had the rare opportunity to share friend-
ship on the dock. Typically at Blake we are all huddled around the fire but
for this late in the season, the weather was quite nice. Dane Fantz got the
horseshoe tournament started and both pits were pitching. I am not sure
what was going on at the other pit but they sounded like a bunch of laugh-
ing geckos. After all was said and done Jeff and Christine LaBounty came
out the victors AGAIN and reclaimed the title along with the plaque.
We had plenty of wood, even some full of moss, back in the hut. Terry
kept the fire going all day cooking his beans but most of the group stayed
on the dock near the JimJo. John Blackford was quite the little dangler
filling his bucket with shrimp and sea urchins. Donna Parker was boat
bound recovering from her foot surgery and it was Don walking Bianca,
who took an afternoon swim. Talk about a salty dog!
For dinner Terry fried chicken and I made hush puppies which are like
little cornbread doughboys, they do go good with a bud. Man they were
good. Everyone did some research and made some awesome southern
sides. We all ate until we were full but not woozy. We provided apples &
fixins for dessert and the adventurous ones made baked apples in the fire.

BLAKE ISLAND RENDEZVOUS PICS
It takes a bit of maneuvering to get 20 boats into
one horseshoe at Blake.
Everyone had a chance to do their own thing and have fun their own way,
although Donna wasn’t having as much fun as usual. But Paul and John
had a great time flying the kite and Steve had seemed to really enjoy
helping Kathy by modeling her scarf (Looks good on you Steve!!!!)

and Kara, Julie and Annie dis-
cuss more pleasant things.
We had the usual
horseshoe pitching
contest and Christine
and Jeff were at their
very best again this
year,
Annie (Marc’s 11 year old daughter) pitched horseshoes for
the first time and had pretty good luck for a beginner, while
Linda shows us the perfect stance for throwing.
