1. Introduction Portable Test Equipment Control Software is a PC software for Portable Test Equipment PTE 2x00 device. Software communicates with the device via RS-232 or USB communication interface.

Basic Software Features:

Data readout from Portable Test Equipment

Data upload to Portable Test Equipment

Data archiving to archive database

Data viewing, editing/adding, sorting and filtering

Output protocol and/or certificate printing1

Generating templates for output protocols and certificates

Minimum System Requirements:

processor Intel Pentium 166 MHz or higher (PII 400 MHz recommended)

operation system Microsoft Windows XP or newer

operation memory 256 MB or more

free hard disk space 150 MB

monitor with resolution 800x600 or higher

mouse or other pointing device

1 The difference between protocol and certificate is only technical. Under the term “protocol” we mean Word document containing values measured from more than one meter. In case that filtering is disabled protocol can include content of whole archive database (depending on parameters that we use in template – some columns don’t need to appear in final document even when we are measuring them). “Certificate” always contains values belonging to one specific meter. So instead of one summary document when using “Protocol” function we have more Word documents (i.e. more certificates), one for each meter in table.

4. Filtering and Sorting Filtering enables to reduce amount of displayed meters (main window – top table) for further processing as printing and evaluation. Sorting enables to sort filtered records according to various criteria. Sorting is accessible through column names. Both functions Filtering and Sorting are accessible through main menu as well as through toolbar button Filter and Sort (see chapter 3.2, page 9). When sorting by one column quick sorting is accessible through column header. When user clicks on column header records in table are sorted according to data in clicked column.

Advanced Sorting and Filtering

4.1.1 Filtering

Advanced Filtering is accessible through window “Advanced sorting and filtering” in field “Filtration”. Records can be filtered according to values in each visible table column. Conditions for filtration should be written into the filtration table columns “MIN” and “MAX”. Filtration will be active only for columns with entered filtration conditions. When only one of values “MIN” or “MAX” for desired column is entered, only records which match entered condition will be displayed. When both values “MIN” and “MAX” are entered, only records with values inside interval qualified with “MIN” and “MAX” will be displayed.

Filtering is activated by pressing button OK.

Filtering cancelation is made by erasing of all values from “MIN” and “MAX” columns and confirmed by OK.

4.1.2 Sorting

Advanced Sorting is accessible through window “Advanced sorting and filtering” in field “Sorting”. Selection of columns for sorting is following: The columns available for sorting are displayed in listbox on the left side. Sorting will be according to columns dragged into right listbox. To change order just use up and down arrows. Sorting is activated by OK button. Sorting is deactivated by Clear button followed by OK.

5. Output Documents The program enables user defined design of output documents using the MS Word profiting from all of its capabilities (in regard to text and picture formatting). The output documents can be separated into two groups:

Protocols - summary protocol with measured results for all selected meters

Certificates - one certificate for each meter

Generation of the output document is performed by automatic filling-in of the measured and calculated output data into the previously created MS Word output document template. Subsequently output document can be saved in a file with an appropriate name and sent to the printer. As a standard, a number of output document templates are delivered with the program; anyway, the user has an option of creating custom ones. The output document templates necessary for generation of the output documents are automatically generated by the program from the command templates. When creating command templates, you can take advantage from all of the MS Word features.

Templates Usage Diagram Attention!

If the user wants to use templates, the MS Word application installed in his PC must be Macro Enabled!

5.1 Generation and Printing The function of generating the output document has two modes.

Generation of Protocols

Generation of Certificates

For output document generation an output document template is necessary. Protocol or certificate printing is accessible by pressing Print button. When this function is activated “Output Document” window is displayed. This window changes depending on output document mode.

Output Document – Protocol Printing

Output Document – Certificate

Generate Output Document … enables generation of output document Output Document Template … selection of document template. For quick navigation to file there is button “Browse”. It is always offered template which was used last time.

Save To File … name of output document (prefix). Before file is saved file name is expanded to include meter index (certificates mode) and “.doc” file name extension (both modes). Default prefix contains “prot” (protocol mode) or “cert” (certificate mode) and date and time information.

Print … enables automatic printing of document after its creation. This option is available only in protocol mode.

Page 23: Portable Test Equipment Control Software · Portable Test Equipment Control Software is a PC software for Portable Test Equipment PTE 2x00 device. Software communicates with the device

Portable Test Equipment - Control Software User’s Guide

www.appliedp.com PTE-UGSW60a-EN 23

5.2 Templates Creation The program can generate the output document template automatically from the previously prepared command template. This is a process in which the command template is gradually analyzed and the recognized protocol commands are substituted by text fields with bookmarks. The purpose of command template is to simplify the process of creating output document template. The creator of command template doesn’t have to insert text fields into document. Instead of text fields he uses specially formatted commands beginning with character #. But there is always the option to create output document template directly without intermediate steps. During process of output document creation, the aforementioned text fields are filled with real values obtained by measurements.

Before starting of output document template generation, it is necessary to launch MS Word and open the command template intended for output document template generation. If there are more files opened in MS Word, the document with command template has to be activated (selected as last one). Output document template generation is launched from program’s main menu by using

„System → Generate Template“. Afterwards an information window is opened which shows the

progress of generation.

After generation is successfully finished it is necessary to save the newly created output document template to be later available for generating output documents. It is recommended to use different file name than command template uses. In case that equal file name is used, original file would be rewritten. As a result the command template would be lost. Then, any subsequent changes in template would have to be done in output document template. Even when this is possible in case of vast changes, this process can be tedious and disarranged.

5.3 Commands of output document The command template is used as a pattern for automatic creation of the output document templates. It is a standard document of the MS Word and therefore during its creation the user can use all MS Word features (insert company’s logo, insert tables, change the font, highlight the text etc.).

To insert the measured and calculated values into the output document and to specify the type of these data, it is necessary to insert appropriate output document commands into the document. The commands in the command template are marked by defined command prefix. The pattern is: command prefix + command (e.g. #SNUM). The commands from the commands database are recognized only if they are preceded by a valid prefix (#). Commands are separated from the remaining text by white characters. The following characters are considered to be white characters in this case: space, dash, move to next paragraph, tab character, character of moving to another table cell. All command parameters have to follow the command without any white character between them. The command itself must not contain the „_“ character which is reserved to separate the command parameters. The parameters are described in the following sections.

5.4 FastReport reporting system FastReport is large software component with many functionalities. FastReport system needs for its function SQL database, where all measurements and their results are stored. For PTE such database is usually located in C:\PTE\DATABASE\pte-archive.gdb file. PTE control software is preinstalled with set of default templates which should meet the needs of most users. If someone wants to create custom template or edit existing one, he must be familiar with C++ script and SQL language (except for very simple changes). For power users who wants to write their own templates there is specialized manual which can be downloaded from http://www.appliedp.com/download/software/edex/FR5UserManual-en.pdf. The main advantages of FastReport system in comparison with old system based on MS Word are as follows:

greater flexibility – no need to define separate templates for different number of meters/measurements

ability to filter meters or measurements displayed in tables (user can for example select only meter error masurements as an example)

no need to remember names of template parameters. All supported parameters are displayed in toolbar window grouped by database tables in which they are stored.

Greater scale of output formats. WS currently supports following output formats: o MS Word 2003 (*.doc), MS Word 2007 (*.docx), o MS Excel 2003 (*.xls), MS Excel (*.xlsx), o MS PowerPoint 2007 (*.pptx), Open Document Spreadsheet (*.ods), o Open Document Text (*.odt), HTML4 (*.html), o HTML5 (*.html), Scalable Vector Graphics (*.svg), o Portable Document Format (*.pdf), Rich Text Format (*.rtf), o bitmap image (*.bmp), JPEG image (*.jpeg),

www.appliedp.com PTE-UGSW60a-EN 35

o TIFF image (*.tiff), Gif image (*.gif), o simple text file (*.txt), CSV file (*.csv)

ability to add charts to output protocols

if dynamic content is needed, templates can be customized by C++ or Pascal scripts

ability to add data from customer specific database

There are four ways how a user can invoke functionality related to FastReport: 1. Clicking on main menu item System → Print Protocol/Print Certificate or toolbar buttons Print

Protocol/Print Certificate. In this case all meters with all their loadpoints will be printed. 2. Clicking on context menu of the table Meters → Print Selected Protocol/Print Selected

Certificate. In this case only selected(marked with blue color) meters will be printed. Multiselection is allowed using Shift or Ctrl buttons.

3. Clicking on context menu of the table Measurements → Print Selected Protocol/Print Selected Certificate. In this case only selected(marked with blue color) loadpoints of one selected meter will be printed. Multiselection is allowed using Shift or Ctrl buttons.

4. Opening FastReport template designer by clicking on main menu item System → Open FastReport designer.

Cases 1, 2 and 3 are essentially the same as generating MS Word protocol by using old system for protocol creation. The only difference is that in window Output Document user must choose FastReport protocol template. FastReport template is identified by file extension “fr3”.

5.4.3 Editing templates

FastReport reporting system is based on templates. This is basically the same as with old system which was based on MS Word templates. But there are also some differences:

FastReport uses only one type of template. Compared with old system which used command template from which final protocol template was generated (refer to diagram on page 21).

FastReport templates are created and edited in its own visual designer which can be run from PTE Control Software.

Less need to memorize names of template commands. All supported commands are listed in toolbar window grouped by database table or query to which it belongs.

FastReport templates are more abstract than MS Word protocol templates, which means that in many cases one template can be used for broad range of measurements. If the table is too wide to fit page FastReport automatically breaks it into more parts each printed on separate page. The same rule applies in case if the table contains many rows (corresponding to count of measurements of the meter).

FastReport template designer can be started by clicking on main menu item System → Open FastReport designer. This is how template designer looks like:

The workspace is divided into following parts:

1 – menu bar 2 – toolbars 3 – object toolbar 4 – “Object inspector” pane 5 – “Report tree” pane 6 – report design workspace 7 – “Data tree” pane – elements can be dragged from this pane onto a report page

For detailed description of designer please refer to FastReport manual which can be downloaded from http://www.appliedp.com/download/software/edex/FR5UserManual-en.pdf.

To fill template with data from database please use shortcut Ctrl + P (preview) or use menu item File → Preview. PTE Control Software is preinstalled with set of templates stored in directory C:\PTE\TEMPLATE. These are some of them:

Template name Purpose protocol.fr3 General purpose protocol template in portrait format. certificate.fr3 certificate_vctdiag.fr3

General purpose certificate template in portrait format. General purpose certificate template including vector diagram in landscape format.

6. Parameters Program parameters are accessible through menu “Configuration → Parameters …”. Window “Parameters”

6.1 Page Readout

Parameters tab ‘Readout’

Delete Data From Device After Successful Readout enables automatic deletion of measured data stored in PTE after every successful PTE readout

Selection of Readout Meters enables possibility to choose measured load points for readout. Only data from selected meters will be stored to local database.

Selection of Measurements and Tests (only for PTE) defines 3 posibilities how to manage the measurements and tests during readout from PTE device

Keep old measurements/tests only – will keep measurements/tests already stored in PC database only, the received measurements/tests from PTE will be ignored

Save new measurements/tests only – will store the received measurements/tests from PTE only, the already stored measurements/tests in PC database will be deleted

Keep old and save new measurements/tests – will keep measurements/tests already stored in PC database and also store the received measurements/tests from PTE

6.2 Page Evaluation

Parameters tab ‘Evaluation’

Outline values outside limit enables highlighting of measured load points with meter error which is out of limits. Tolerance limit is equal to meter class of accuracy. In case that meter error is higher than meter class of accuracy, character * will be printed into output document or certificate following numerical value of error.

Phase normalization enables user to set mode in which phase information will be presented. This setting influences values displayed on screen as well as values exported to output documents.
