he ASA-100 enables the
Smart-binder stitcher to continual-
ly and automatically adjust the wire sta-
ples to perfectly suit the thickness of each
booklet being stitched. This allows book
thickness to vary continually ‘on-the-run’
between minimum and maximum.
The SBS-100 module will be instal-
led in between the web cutter and the
Smart-binder. The buffer receives printed
sheets at a constant rate from the web
cutter (as defined by the printer running
speed), stores these sheets and feeds
them at variable rates into the Smart-bin-
der depending on the number of sheets
in each booklet
The SBS-100 allows very thin booklets
(for example 8 pagers and even 4-page
single sheets) to be mixed with thicker
booklets while maintaining a constant,
high printer web speed. It even allows the
in-line Smart-binder to stop and restart if
necessary without pausing the printing
operation. This SBS-100 buffer module
enables IBIS customers to benefit from
in-line finishing, without reducing printing
efficiency.
John Cracknell, Managing Director of
IBIS, which has installations across the
globe, said: “Our latest IBIS technical ad-
vances will further demonstrate how our
customers can benefit from the econo-
mies and advantages of digital printing
and finishing processes, for an increasing
range of diverse client segments and ap-
plications.”

nitial results from the second
„drupa Global Trends“ report
are showing sustained recovery
from the recession with some surprising
insights and positive feedback. The full
report designed to highlight economic
and operational trends in the worldwi-
de print sector is available at the end of
March. The results are all the more inte-
resting as the survey itself, conducted in
October 2014, was largely identical to the
first „drupa Global Trends“ report from
February 2014. In addition this year a full
survey was conducted amongst industry
suppliers for the first time, ensuring a ba-
lanced picture of the global print market.
Developments and important key data
from the worldwide print sector – such

as financial conditions, business climate,
investment plans and technologies used
are given in detail and trends revealed.
Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, Chairman
of the Messe Düsseldorf Management
Board summarises the key results of the
study. „The generally upbeat picture re-
ported by the expert panel surprised us,”
says Dornscheidt. “Both the print service
providers and the interna-tional supplier
industry gave a positive evaluation of the
economic situation of their own compa-
nies as at October 2014. Even more sur-
prising, however, was that the print and
supplier industry is heading into 2015 with
a very positive outlook.”
The question ‘How do you see the out-
look for the coming twelve months?’ was
answered by 48 percent of service pro-
viders sur-veyed with expectations of an
improvement in their companies’ econo-
mic situation, and only seven percent with
a decline. The re-sults from the worldwide
supplier industry were similarly positive:
51 percent forecast an improvement, and
only eight percent a de-cline.
On the other hand, the results from indi-
vidual performance measures surveyed
show a much more mixed picture:
1. Sales for print service providers continue to rise – but are less pro-nounced.
39 percent of print service providers re-
port an increase, whereas 22 percent
show a drop in sales. This positive ba-
lance of 17 percent is well below the
positive net balance of 27 percent from
the first survey.
2. The margins for print ser-vice providers continue to fall.
Almost half (43 percent) of the print
service providers sur-veyed report

falling margins, while just 16 percent
succeed-ed in increasing mar-
gins. Positive exceptions here are
the markets of North America and
the Middle East, where 29 and 28
percent reported increased margins.
3. Digital print is growing fast but is still a small percentage of turnover for most printers.
As quickly as the share of digital prin-
ting in the overall print technology mix
continues to rise, most turnover conti-
nues to be generated from tradi-tional
print. Only ten percent of the print ser-
vice providers surveyed achieved more
than 25 percent of their 2014 sales in
digital printing (2013: 8 percent).
4. Print service providers are not turning to services outside the print sector.
Often recommended as a new bu-
siness area – but not yet realised in
practice: Just 27 percent of the print
providers surveyed achieved more than
ten percent of their sales with services
outside the print sector (e.g. asset ma-

nagement for customers, updating da-
tabases, etc.).
Drawing an initial conclusion from the se-
cond „drupa Global Trends“ report, tho-
se surveyed feel pretty positive – even if
some measures are still showing negative
trends. This general optimism is suppor-
ted by the investment plans cited both by
print service providers and supplier firms.
After all, only a forward-looking develop-
ment strategy ensures a competitive edge
and thus the future of the company.
More than 1100 international decision-ma-
kers from the print industry and their sup-
pliers responded to the comprehensive
survey in October 2014. The independent
market research company Wissler & Part-
ner (Switzerland) and Printfuture (UK) have
– as with the first „drupa Global Trends“
report and the first „drupa Global Insights“
report – expertly evaluated and prepared
the results. At the end of March the Exe-
cutive Summary will be available as a free

ven products without a low
folio lap can now be easily
opened and processed using
the FlexLiner inserting system. That ex-
tends the range of applications of the
FlexLiner and the processing options in
the mailroom.
Muller Martini‘s FlexLiner inserting sys-
tem is now even more flexible. It can now
also open products without a low folio
lap or high folio lap. Products trimmed on
three sides and products in the tabloid
format, such as magazines or municipal
gazettes, are gently opened in the center
using a blade-like slide and prepared for
the inserting process. The inserts are then
inserted without any loss in performance.
Magazine opening is available as an op-
tion and can be easily retrofitted on exis-
ting FlexLiners.
Flexible UsesNewspapers have not been the only
products to be finished in the mailroom
for some time now. Direct-mailing com-
panies also use the FlexLiner inserting
system from Muller Martini to put together
mail shots. Carrier products, whether they
are covers or tabloid products, are ope-
ned using a sucker unit or low folio lap
unit, and the gathered inserts are reliably
inserted.
The FlexLiner is also used with suction
opening to place inserts into inserts at
high production speeds. This is an addi-
tional attractive business model that has
proven itself in the market and now ac-
counts for around 5 to 10 percent of insert
volume.
New Product Configuration OptionsWith FlexFeed selective main product
feeding, customers have entirely new op-
portunities to set themselves apart from
the competition with the FlexLiner. The
main sections can be fed selectively to the
inserting machine via up to five feeding
stations, which can be loaded manually
from the FlexiRoll buffer system or directly
from the printing press. Alternatively, up
to four inserts can be positioned on the
front or back page of a main section as
FlexAds (onserting). In addition, an insert
can be affixed to the front or back page
of a main section as an AddOn. In that
prominent position, every FlexAd stands
out from the crowd.

Maximal flexibility through preprinted continuous corrugated boardMAIL-ORDER TRADER OPTIMISES PACKAGING STRATEGY.
ith his increasing sa-
les success with home
products, including lar-
ge and small furniture, an online supplier
has seen constant growth in its demand
for packaging. However, the diversity of
packaging solutions which the Panther
Group delivers to that client has also
shown continuous increase. The two
companies have together now found a
new strategy to deal sensibly and eco-
nomically with the variable requirements
of the trader in terms of transport packa-
ging. Highest priority has been given to
stylish market presentation, because the
online trader consciously communicates
his quality image and brand character by
means of packaging design.
The specialists for high-quality flexo-pre-
print at the Wepoba corrugated-board
plant and at Panther Print have developed
a solution which succeeds in combining
the benefits of the 2.80 m wide high-per-
formance printing press and its fasci-
nating print quality with processing to
endless corrugated board and in that
way has achieved corrugated-board pro-
duction which is both visually convincing
and economical in terms of cost. The
end results are a wide spectrum of va-
riable packaging sizes for the online tra-
der. The lining papers printed by Panther
using multi-coloured continuous printing
to customer specifications are processed
further across the whole width in another
working step. The finished material is fi-
nally cut into two different web widths.
For maximal flexibility in terms of packa-
ging sizes, pre-defined grooves are en-
gineered into the web, facilitating the later
production of the dimensions necessary
for the different sizes of transport packa-
ging.

its end-to-end automation.
All major settings are made at the
touch-screen display. Four automatic fold
plates with integrated defl ectors allow all
common small folds down to a fold length
of 15 mm. 16 types of fold are pre-pro-
grammed and can be recalled immedia-
tely - all other folds are freely program-
mable by entering the respective data.
Fold rollers settings are also automated
and even the code readers move to a
defi ned position at the touch of a button.
The computer control makes it possible
to save the positions of the stops of fold
plates, defl ectors or the code reader and
to set them again automatically when re-
quired. Thus up to 200 repeat jobs are ex-
actly reproducible, which is of great use
for small batches. The folder can be opti-

sko announces a new range
of Kongsberg tools is avai-

than hundred high-quality cutting blades,
router bits and accessories, some of the
newest tools include a psaligraphy (paper
cutting) knife tool, perforation wheel and
braille tool. All three tools are available for
usage on the Kongsberg XN, Kongsberg
V and Kongsberg XL Series of digital finis-
hing systems.
Innovation in digital finishing crea-tes new business opportunitiesKongsberg 50 years logoCelebrating its
golden jubilee this year, Esko Kongsberg
built a strong foundation with the right
technology and skills to help customers
take full advantage of the opportunities
digital finishing offers in the signage, dis-
play and packaging markets. The broad
portfolio of Kongsberg cutting tables ca-
ters to the different needs and speed in
various segments of these markets.
But the wide variety of tools is what truly
enables customers to extend their offe-
rings and expand their businesses with
the most creative use of materials and
applications. Producers of packaging,
displays and signage are used to work
with a variety of substrates, ranging from
foam, plastics and vinyl to paper, corruga-
ted boards and folding carton. And ever
more materials are being added to the
portfolio, including glass, wood, alumini-
um and textiles – opening up new mar-
kets and new applications. To keep up
with these new demands and further im-
prove existing solutions, Esko Kongsberg
has an experienced R&D team constantly
developing new tools. High performance
linked to high precision is what makes the
difference here.
More than 100 cutting blades, and still countingToday, Esko Kongsberg already offers
more than 100 different cutting blades
that are optimized for a very broad range
of materials and applications. But there is
much more these cutting systems can do
when equipped with crease wheels, crea-
se blades, milling bits or plotting pens.

knife tool that cuts out the finest details
in paper and folding carton, at a level
not seen before. This is a perfect tool for
adding creativity and value to greeting
cards, promotional items or folding car-
ton samples.
Kongsberg Perforation WheelThe 60 mm
Perforation wheel enabling users to crea-
te tear and crease-assist perforations in
corrugated board up to 4 mm thick at a
much higher speed than before. This tool
is ideal for producing POP-materials and
all kinds of packaging. Prior to this wheel
becoming available, it took about 40 se-
conds to do 1 meter of a 3x3 perforation
pattern (3 mm cut and 3 mm space). The
new wheel only needs 2 seconds to do
that, quite a time saving!
Kongsberg Braille ToolThe Braille tool,
loaded with clear acrylic ‘Braille spheres’
that are inserted into small holes. These
holes are milled with a special spindle to
create raised dots that are readable with
fingertips. The Braille tool will work on
most rigid materials more than one mm
thick and is used to produce signage re-
quiring directions or inscriptions in braille.

Hucais vitalizes business model with FormerLineCHINESE LETTERPRESS GIANT RELIES ON DIGITAL PRINTING
WORKFLOW WITH INLINE-FINISHING FROM MANROLAND WEB
ucais was the first Chinese
printing company to imple-
ment a digital printing work-
flow with Inline-Finishing thanks to For-
merLine. The book block solution from
manroland web systems is part of a lar-
ge-scale order involving the installation of
numerous FormerLine systems, some still
yet to come.
At the inauguration of the digital printing
center in Dongguan, in spring 2014, a tra-
ditional Chinese lion dance was perfor-
med. The dance is believed to bring good
fortune. And it did: even after starting up
the fourth and fifth digital printing lines
in March and April of 2015, there are still
many reasons to celebrate this elabora-
te project at Hucais. The new workflow
is a milestone in the printing company’s
digital history: for the first time, the who-
le workflow, from the printing data to
auxiliary glued book blocks, now occurs
entirely inline at production sites in both
Dongguan and Peking. The book block
solution FormerLine has taken over digi-
tal finishing for the fifth time at Hucais; it
functions as an offline variant in the first
three lines installed at the company. Chen
Chengwen, President & CEOof Hucais is
impressed: „The straightforward co-ope-
ration with manroland web systems had
been an essential success factor for the
inline integration of the two lines at record
speed.“
Changing market for letterpressHucais wouldn’t have it any other way:
the company’s progressively digital pro-
duction scheme, which includes the For-
merLine installations, is part of an over-
arching business model. In addition to
expanding its digital production network
(sites in Dongguan, Peking, Shaoxing),
the media company has established an
e-commerce platform for printed pro-
ducts. This allows Hucais to accept print-
on-demand jobs directly and print them
quickly and close to the reader, thus sa-
tisfying the needs of publishers. In China
as well, publishers demand cost-efficient
production of small runs and on-demand
delivery instead of warehousing.
Key component in business modelThe new digital workflow for book pro-
duction in Peking comprises a digital
press from Hewlett Packard with a novel
inline integration of the FormerLine sys-
tem. Hucais sees it as a key step on the
road to a successful future. The printing
company pursues a vision of bringing
personalized printed materials into every
household in China – from books to a va-
riety of other personalized printed items.
Wu Jianguo, production manager at
Hucais Peking, explains the FormerLine’s
vital support: “We are already seeing that
inline production results in significant sa-
H
SYSTEMS.

vings in both time and personnel. With
FormerLine, we can be more cost-effecti-
ve in printing short runs and print-on-de-
mand jobs. What’s more, we are grateful
for the comprehensive training we recei-
ved when the inline former started pro-
duction.”
Exemplary teamwork for installationHighly efficient, from the harbor cont-
ainer to production, the project moved at
an impressive pace. Just three weeks af-
ter starting to assemble the components,
each of the FormerLine units passed final
inspection before the start of producti-
on. The dedication and expertise of the
teams from Hucais, manroland Greater
China, and manroland web systems was
excellent, as Liu Changshou, who led
the installation team at Hucais, confirms:
“The teams were hard at work for days on
end. manroland web systems demons-
trated its merit as a reliable partner. It
wasn’t just the quality of the equipment,
but also their engineering expertise and
service that won us over.” Rainer Mauer,
project manager at manroland web sys-
tems adds: “Rapid implementation and
the production reliability of the workflow
are two important factors in the long term.
Our experience here will help us when it
comes to future FormerLine installations.
And there will be a number of them in the
near future at Hucais, all as inline vari-
ants.” Mauer also reports that the integra-
tion of the new FormerLine system went
off without a hitch: “We worked together
with Hewlett Packard to define and impro-
ve the interface between the FormerLine
and the press to enable the production
process that our customer Hucais nee-
ded. That allowed us to ensure a smooth
inline production process.”
Flexible technology for the futureHucais will be able to capitalize on the
excellent flexibility of the book block so-
lution when needed. The FormerLine is
equipped for MasterQ, a dynamic im-
position and job management solution
from manroland web systems. The soft-
ware especially shows its strength in di-
gital printing with small and very small
runs. manroland web systems developed
MasterQ as an interface between MIS
systems, prepress, or web2print applica-
tions and the printing system, as well as
finishing. MasterQ determines the optimal
production sequence for different pro-
duction modules based on existing and
incoming data, for example via the prin-
ting company website.

olish packaging print shop Ar-
ka-Druk in Lapy near Bialystok
has begun production with the
world’s first Promatrix 106 CS die cutter.
At an open house event at the end of
March this year, other Polish printers wit-
nessed this world premiere with practical
demonstrations and were provided with
comprehensive technical information.
The Promatrix 106 CS is the first machine
to result from the partnership concluded
last fall between Chinese manufacturer
Masterwork Machinery Co. Ltd. (MK)
and Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG
(Heidelberg). The machine is being sold
exclusively by Heidelberg.
Following lengthy and extensive testing,
Arka-Druk is now benefiting from the
comprehensive standard features of the
Promatrix 106 CS and is delighted with
the high quality. Arka-Druk was founded
in 2000, has 70 employees, and supplies
discerning customers in the packaging
industry, including pharmaceutical and
cosmetics companies. Its excellent ex-
periences with the Varimatrix 105 CS die
cutter and Easygluer 100 folding carton
gluing machine, also installed by Heidel-
berg, underpinned its decision to purcha-
se the Promatrix 106 CS. “We were loo-
king for a die cutter for runs and lead
times that are becoming ever shorter,”

explains owner Arthur Bach. “The tests
with the Promatrix 106 CS met all our ex-
pectations. The die cutter fits in well with
our concept of industrial production with
structured processes and delivers high
quality with reliable production,” he adds.
New Promatrix 106 CS die cutter for short to medium runsHeidelberg unveiled the Promatrix 106
CS last fall at the Packaging Days held in
Hall 11 at its Wiesloch-Walldorf site. The
machine impresses with a wide range of
standard features, extremely user-friend-
ly operation, and an attractive price-per-
formance ratio. The Promatrix 106 CS
performs die cutting and embossing at a
speed of 8,000 sheets per hour for a 760
× 1,060 millimeter (29.92 × 41.73 inch) for-
mat. Thanks to its short makeready times,
users benefit from high productivity and
excellent cost-efficiency. It can handle a
wide range of materials – from 90 all the
way up to 2,000 grams per square meter
– and also processes corrugated board
up to four millimeters (0.16 inches) thick.
Further sales of die cutter and new products planned“We’re delighted the Promatrix 106 CS
has been so well received by the custo-
mer. Other machines sold to European
customers are almost ready for delivery,”
confirms Dr. Frank Schaum, head of
Postpress at Heidelberg. The Heidelberg
sales team works closely with product
management at MK. This ensures new
products meet customers’ technical and
commercial requirements. “We will conti-
nue to develop the product portfolio with
MK in the medium term. Our objective in
doing so is to supply the right machines
and solutions to ensure effective folding
carton production, complete with the
appropriate service activities,” explains
Schaum. Customers also enjoy access to
the Heidelberg global sales and service
network.

ith over 200 printing
units sold from all avai-
lable series and a high
infl ux of visitors to the 1,000m2 stand,
Print China which ran from 7 to 12 April
in Guangdong was a huge success for
the KBA Group. Several KBA companies
joined forces under the banner “KBA: Print
Solutions for All” and the host of exhibits
ranging from sheetfed and web offset,
fl exo, inkjet, metal, hollow container and
glass decoration, and digital coding sys-
tems were met with great interest. The
Chinese print pundits were surprised and
blown away by the breadth and variety
of print solutions bearing the KBA logo.
Many only previously knew of KBA’s Rapi-
da sheetfed offset presses which are wi-
despread in China. Despite the country’s
recent somewhat sluggish economy, the
string of new orders and projects book-
ed by the end of the trade show clearly
surpassed all expectations. KBA profi ted
from its strong footing in packaging prin-
ting. In addition, high performance pres-
ses with extensive kit and automation are
becoming increasingly popular given the
rise in wage costs also in China. KBA Ra-
pidas accommodate this trend.
Print Solutions for All banner hits homeClaus Bolza-Schünemann, president
and CEO of Koenig & Bauer, summed up
his visit to the trade show: “Print China
shows us that our efforts concerning our
Fit@All programme are on the right track
and that we will be fi t and well-positioned
VISITOR INFLUX AND TRADE FAIR ORDERS SURPASSED

to move into the third century of our com-
pany’s long history in two years’ time.” Ralf
Sammeck, executive vice-president for
sheetfed offset presses, was also present
and added: “Along with sheetfed offset,
our exhibits here demonstrate that KBA
specialises in nearly everything which can
be printed and fi nished with colour or inks
using various techniques. We can there-
fore fulfi l all of our customers’ demands.”
Crowds fl ocked to watch live demos of a
fi ve-colour Rapida 105 with coater and a
Rapida 75-4+L equipped with energy-sa-
ving and environmentally friendly LED-
UV. The Rapida 105, which is based on
the Rapida 106, can be found in printing
companies across China and was again
the most ordered press at the show. A
raft of new users also snapped up the
more highly automated Rapida 105 PRO,
even though its offi cial unveiling is sched-
uled for the end of June in Radebeul.
KBA profi ts from shift in Chinese print marketThe string of orders placed during the tra-
de show ranged from the Rapida 75, Ra-
pida 105, Rapida 105 PRO, the high-tech
Rapida 106 to the large-format Rapida
145. The second order for a Rapida 145
from internet printer Zhengzhou Shengda
Color Printing Co. Ltd is an example of the
shift in the Chinese print market. KBA sa-
les director Dietmar Heyduck: “In the face
of tough competition Chinese online prin-
ters are increasingly switching to large for-
mat. We are supporting this development
with our automated large-format presses
for fast job change, a higher level of pro-
ductivity and shorter delivery times.” Wal-
ter Zehner, managing director of KBA Chi-
na: “Gaining online printers as customers
for our highly productive large Rapidas
is a huge opportunity for us and means
less staff costs for our clients, increased
effi ciency and greater competitiveness.”
The order for two Rapida 106 with Dri-
veTronic SIS sidelay-free infeed and Dri-
veTronic SPC direct plate-cylinder drives
by Guangdong Jinguan Technology Co.
Ltd. is a further example of the trend to-
wards high tech in China. The company
aims to offer packaging printing with this
new high-performance technology online.
Accordingly, signing the contract was ce-
lebrated offi cially in the presence of mem-
bers of the KBA management board.
Good prospects in packaging printingDietmar Heyduck: “The Chinese packa-
ging market continues to grow, especially
with regard to consumer packaging. The
majority of the orders placed here at the
trade show came from packaging printers
and their demands in terms of press equip-
ment are also rising. Longer presses with
more than four or fi ve colours, inline coa-
ting and a higher level of automation are
becoming increasingly more popular. KBA
is the fi rst choice for Chinese sheetfed off-
set printers in the packaging segment.”

Walter Zehner: “We hope that we can
transfer our outstanding reputation with
folding carton printers to the new fl exo
presses for fl exible packaging soon. Many
of the print experts visiting Print China
were amazed by the fi lm samples printed
on presses from KBA-Flexotecnica and
visitors fl ocked to our fl exo seminar. There
are also concrete projects for KBA-Flexo-
tecnica’s EVO presses in the pipeline. The
production of fl exible packaging is still
dominated by gravure in China, neverthe-
less fl exo printing which is environmental-
ly friendly and economical for small and
medium-sized jobs has exceptional pro-
spects for the future. This is also true of
the printing systems from KBA-Kammann
for the direct decoration of premium glass
containers, the well-positioned metal-de-
corating lines from KBA-MetalPrint and
KBA-Metronic’s marking and coding
systems suited to packaging lines or co-
ding industrial goods. KBA has a strong
footing in the growing packaging market.
We were pleased that we could bring this
message to a raft of potential users at
Print China.”
