So close and yet so farOn Wednesday 22 June, Bafana Bafana faced France in Bloemfontein. This game wasthe homeside’s last chance to advance to the next round. The local public viewing area(PVA) at Ntwampe, Moroke was once again packed with local supporters.Dressed in full supporters gear they waited while a new service provider sorted out thelast minute glitches with the bigger big screen. Just as some fans were about to thinkthey might miss the game the screen flickered to life. Literally two minutes beforekick-off everything was connected and working. The speakers were still being hoistedand secured (see photograph below) as the game started. The day ended bitter sweetwith South Africa beating France 2-1 but failing to advance to the next round.

Anooraq Resources said on Monday thatthe company had experienced an increasein production volumes and a decrease inunit costs at its Bokoni Plitinum Mine, following a labour restructure.
Anooraq, which took over the Bokoniplatinum mine from Anglo Platinum, saidthat the labour restructure focusedprimarily on improving the balance at itsBokoni operations to ensure that moreemployees were placed in revenue-generating activities, as opposed to minesupport services.
This resulted in 11 new stoping teamsbeing introduced to the operations, withthe total stoping teams increasing from 70teams to 81 teams during the company’ssecond quarter. It is anticipated that atotal of 100 stoping teams would be activeat Bokoni by the end of the fourth quarterof the 2010 financial year.
The restructuring process affectedsome 840 people, representing one-quarterof Anooraq’s own employee workforce.
Anooraq CEO Philip Kotze said thatthe company was already experiencing thebenefits of its labour restructureprogramme, reporting positive results atits operations, in volume growth and unitcost reductions.
Kotze noted that production volumeswere beginning to increase, with a steadyupward trend in month-on-monthproduction from April 2010 onwards.
Anooraq anticipated an increase in itssecond-quarter production growth of notless than 15% when compared with itsfirst-quarter production.
Meanwhile, the Bokoni concentratorplant upgrade project was alsoimplemented during the company’s secondquarter.
The project encountered somechallenges, which resulted in greater-than-anticipated mill stops and lowerrecoveries than planned, but Kotze saidthat all “teething problems” had beenaddressed and that the concentrator hadreturned to meet design parameter targetswith respect to recoveries and throughput.
