The brightly elongated canoes glide quickly

through the V&A Waterfront to the consis-

tent beat of the onboard drum.

The 18 paddlers row in unison as they glide their

“dragons” through the choppy waters in hopes of

crossing the finish line first.

This is the scene you would expect to see on a

river in a small Asian village. Instead, the scene

plays itself out at the Waterfront, where a group of

yooungsters from all over Mitchell’s Plain are

among a growing number of enthusiasts, who put

shoulder to paddle over weekends, trying to per-

ferct the art of dragonboat racing.

The sport, which originated in China, has been

a part of the city scene for more than 12 years, says

Moegsien Jacobs, from Lentegeur.

Jocobs, a director of the Sikho-Sonke Youth

Development Agency said dragonboat racing was

one of his organisation’s ongoing outreach pro-

gramme.

Jacobs said that he has been involved with drag-

onboat racing since 2003 and is the co-ordinator of

the All Star Dragons.

“About 80% of my paddlers are pupils at Spine

Road High,” he said.

The All Stars was among a number of teams

from Mitchell’s Plain and other areas who took part

in last month’s Youth Day Regatta, at the Water-

front.
