PLEASANT HILL

INSTRUCTIONAL GARDEN

Thanks for a Great Earth Day Celebration! Earth Day 2017

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate Earth Day

on April 30th! We had a great day in the Garden learning

about pollinators, native plants, composting and lots more.

Click here to read about the day in the PHIGarden News Blog.

A special thank you to all of our contributors and exhibitors who came out to

display or educate us and the community. We appreciate you very much!

New Project: Mt. Diablo High School Students Partner with PHIG

When the City of Pleasant Hill recently decided to upgrade

city monument signs, PHIG asked to repurpose one for

signage in the Garden to mark the new entrance to the

Garden and make it more clear for visitors. Partnering with

Mt. Diablo High School’s ACME Academy, teacher Marco

Castro tasked his Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM)

students to refurbish the

deteriorated sign. Using a laser

engraver, they also created the

additional Instructional Garden

sign that will hang underneath.

Thank you to Mr. Castro and his students for help with this awesome project! Visit

the PHIGarden News Blog to read more!

Happy 10 Year Anniversary to PHIG!

We are celebrating our 10th great year as a

community instructional garden and native

wildlife habitat! It has been wonderful to see

the many ways in which the community

engages with the Garden, whether it’s an

evening stroll through, a meet-up with friends,

or teaching your kids about native plants. We

are very grateful to our volunteers and donors,

and for the support of this beautiful community.

Community Spotlight:

Mt. Diablo Beekeeper’s Association

One of the highlights of PHIG’s Earth Day Celebration

in April was the Mt. Diablo Beekeeper’s Association

table, which came complete with a demonstration hive

in a glass case. The hive was encased in glass, and

they had marked the Queen with a tiny yellow dot so

she was easy to find.

Visitors learned

that drone bees

will encircle the

Queen, pulling

her pheromones

and spreading them throughout the hive.

Beekeepers Gregory, Jeri and Mary provided

unique, thoughtful and thorough explanations.

Visit the Mt. Diablo Beekeeper’s Associate website to learn more.

Save the Bees

Bees are dying and are in

danger of becoming extinct if we don’t act soon to

ensure their survival. The theme of Earth Day this

year was ‘Provide for Pollinators’ because they are

critically important to our habitats, crops, and for the

food we eat. Planting native and other pollinator

plants in your garden to attract bees will help give

them the diverse and plentiful diet they need to

continue pollinating effectively.

Download PHIG’s pollinator plant list on PHIG’s web

site.

Thank you to all PHIG Volunteers and Donors!

Special Thank You to Dougherty

Valley High School and Diablo Valley

College Volunteers

PHIG would like to extend a special thank you to

Dougherty Valley High School (DVHS) National

Honor Society and DVHS Key Cub, DVC Enactus,

DVC Habitat for Humanity, and DVC Earth Club

for consistently sending volunteers to assist at

PHIG with Garden Work Parties. We truly appreciate the help of all volunteers, and

could not run PHIG without you!

Volunteer Opportunities

Interested in giving back to the community, expanding your gardening knowledge,

and getting some exercise? Join us in the garden usually on Sundays from 9 am -12

pm for a Garden Work Party! Contact [email protected] for dates and

information, or leave a message on voicemail: (925) 482-6670.

WiFi Networking Technical Support and Service

for Weather Station Volunteer Opportunity

PHIG has a working Davis Instruments Vantage Pro weather

station connected to the Internet for display 24/7 to be both a

community resource and at school for PHIG and GLOBE program

school use. Additionally, data is uploaded to the Citizen Weather

Observer Network, for even wider use by NASA and NOAA.

Contact: [email protected]; (925) 482-6670

Requirements: Knowledge of wireless networking computer

technology and possibly familiarity with weather station

reporting.

Composting System Arbor Volunteer Opportunity

We are looking for volunteers who can help us finish building the arbor for weather

protection over the composting system and to help us place a new sign in the

revised entry to the garden. While construction skills are not necessary, it is helpful if

you do have a hammer, screwdriver, or other tools you could bring with you. Email

us for more details and help us organize ahead of time: [email protected].;
