Presidents Report
Easter was certainly a busy and successful time for all of us. Our 3rd Championship show held on Good Friday at Castle Hill in the evening proved to be a great success. We were very fortunate to have a breed specialist in Gunnar Nyman from Denmark to give us his opinion and it was enlightening to hear his thoughts on where our breed is going. Thank you to all the committee for their hard work and thank you to the members for their generous donations that went to make our trophy table such a beautiful one. Special thanks go to Jo Reimer who did so much in printing the catalogue and helping set up and
run show day. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to our interstate and intrastate exhibitors that made the show a success.Although I was unable to attend Sydney Royal judging of Grands and Petits on Easter Sunday there was a lovely entry and I heard the Judge Mrs Moore was impressed with the presentation of the two breeds. Petits and Grands are continuing to do so well in the show ring generally which is great to see. This is why the two breeds are growing in interest and popularity. It is almost at the end of the financial year and it would be great if more members could participate in the running of this small but friendly club. Please come along and help out on our breed stall that we are setting up at “Dogs On Show” on Saturday 14th June at Erskine Park.Regards Robert Lauder

It has been a very busy and hectic time for the small but hardworking committee of the club. There is a lot of show news because the Easter period is always one of the busiest show time. This newsletter has reports of these activities and includes- Our 3rd Championship show

I would like to thank Jo Meadows for the use of her photos in this newsletter, taken in very difficult light conditions.I hope there is also enough other information to interest those who are not quite so mad about dog shows as some of us are.

Vendeen Views and News
Robyn Wallis will remember the Easter shows in Sydney in 2014 with mixed feelings.
On one hand she saw her young Minor Puppy win BIS at the specialty show over more seasoned competitiors and on the other hand she developed a severe case of gastric flu which necessitated her spending time in hospital. Her husband, Russell flew up from Melbourne to be with her and she needed to recuperate for several days in the home of Sue Pinnow before she was well enough to travel home. It took her 6 days before she was feeling human again. Not a good way to celebrate. I hope you are fully recovered now Robyn.
History in the making In March 2014 Karen Johnston’s Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen, Abbey
became the first GBGV in Australia to compete in an Agility trial at Newcastle. It was her very 1st run in competition and she came 4th. Karen said “They are just the best dogs, so happy and laid back and a delight to own.”
Reserve in Royal Sweepstakes
Congratulations to Jo and Beryl Hession for a great Sydney Royal result winning 2nd place in the Puppy Sweepstakes from a very big line up.

Australian GBGV to Singapore. In the last newsletter we featured the large litter of GBGV’s bred by Jane Casperson-Quinn . On March 21, one of those puppies, little Laserre Eastern Promise made his journey to Singapore to his new home there. We wish him well and it shows what a small world it now is.

Crufts RBCC Grand dies on the way home
The lovely young GBGV who won Reserve bitch at Crufts was killed on the way home from Crufts. The bitch, Black Majesty Saint She Ain’t somehow slipped her lead and was hit by a car. The report of the incident is taken from Dog World below
Owner describes desperate search for GBGV killed in France
Created: 09/03/2014THE OWNER of the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen who after winning the reserve CC at Crufts went missing in France, has described how during her desperate search she heard she had been run over and killed. Iva Raic had to identify the body of two-year-old Black Majesty Saint She Ain’t (Panda) who was being driven back to Poland by friends when she disappeared. Ms Raic, who bred Panda, was on her way home from Crufts to Croatia on Sunday when she was told her dog was missing. Panda lives with a friend in Poland, and arrangements had been made that two other Poles who
had been at Crufts would collect Panda from GBGV exhibitor Viv Phillips’ house and drive her home with their other dogs. It is not known exactly what happened but it is believed they may have stopped to allow the dogs to relieve themselves and at that point Panda either escaped from the vehicle or slipped her collar in a wooded area near to a busy road network. Ms Raic, who is studying to be a vet in Zagreb, had reached Germany when she was told Panda was missing. She instructed the Poles to search in one area of Calais and she would drive back to look in another. It took her three hours to get there by which time Panda has been lost for six hours. Ms Raic, who also has Petits Bassets Griffons Vendeens and ShihTzus, launched a search party, and a few hours later received a call from a man saying he had seen a dog fitting Panda’s description running down a road. "But it was too late,” she told DOG WORLD on Tuesday. "We heard they had found a dog who had been hit by a car and killed. It was Panda. "It’s a terrible thing to have happened and I am very unhappy about it. She was from my favourite dog and was really wonderful – as a show dog and a pet in the house. She was wonderful with people and animals – a really good dog. "I would like to thank everyone who helped try to find her and who have supported me during the search and afterwards. It means a lot to me.” Panda was judged on Friday by Gavin Robertson. - See more at: http://www.dogworld.co.uk/product.php/110326#sthash.wbx71ztA.dpuf
NE Griffon Vendéen Show 2014 in Canet FranceI have stolen this video from Jane Quinn and it shows a Griffon Vendeen show in France . The Griffon Vendeens are the big relatives of our Grand and Petit Basset and are the originals of the breed. They date well back into the Middle Ages when they were used to hunt by French nobility on horseback. The link shows a video from Canet, NE Griffon Vendéen 18.05.2014, with part of the judging and shows what large and impressive dogs they are. http://www.petit-basset-griffon-vendéen.eu/national-élevage-2014/

Dock Dogs is a sport where dogs are allowed to jump off a dock into water to fetch an article. A great summer sport which most dogs love once they learn what to do. Jackson had a go over summer and he seems to have got the hang of the swimming part of it. A lovely photo by Jo Meadows

Mixed Basset Families
In March Jane Quinn commented on the first pet pairing of GBGVs and PGBVs
I've just been sent this photo of Laserre Champchevrier 'Rudi' by his new owners, he's with his PBGV pal Lola - definitely the first PBGV / GBGV pair in Australia! Such a lovely home for a Grand boy to have.
Now another one of Jane Quinn’s puppy buyers has also joined the mixed family pairing. Sharyn Riding from the Central
Coast NSW had Monty from the Laserre Christmas litter and she and he husband fell in love with the breed so much that they decided to add a PBGV to the family. So now Saffy, bred by Claire Parker, has joined the family as a companion for Monty. The second PBGV/GBGV pair perhaps and already good friends. Sharyn has also joined our club so we look forward to sharing some of our events with her and catching up with her pair of BGVs.
Trish Smith, better known for her Basset Fauve de Bretagnes is another person who has fallen for the charms of the GBGV. Laserre Mignone Bulles "Bubbles" has joined the Fauve family and Trish wrote. A sweeter puppy would be hard to find - thanks to Jane Casperson-Quinn for the opportunity to add a Grand to our family.
It looks as if the Christmas litter of Jane’s are already winners when it comes to promoting the breed
Neglected Puppy
Sadly not all the stories of our dogs are happy ones. Jo and Beryl Hession had a horrible shock when a puppy they bred was returned to them in an appalling condition. This is something
no caring breeder wants to have happen but it shows that no matter how careful you are some people just let you down. Jo reported -Absolutely devastated & angry, after much thought we allowed our 3 mth old PBGV to go Tasmania. The Person in question couldn't afford a peeb but always wanted one, so we decided to send a female puppy, however after 3 months the person decided they couldn't afford to show her. We paid for her to be returned to us, picked her up from Airport. The condition of the puppy is absolutely appalling- undernourished, sores on her body, skin raw, bald patches on her ears, coat missing and very brittle and also down on Pasterns. It's going to take 12 months of TLC to get her back on condition.
13
The Basset Griffon Vendeen Club of NSW
This pup can no longer be shown as the neglect she experienced has ruined her for showing but I am pleased to say that after much care from Jo and Beryl, she has now gone to a loving pet home where she is valued and cared for as she deserves.

The 2014 Championship Show
The 2014 Championship show saw an entry of 30 dogs for breed specialist Mr G Nyman from Denmark.
The show took place on Good Friday evening and the weather was perfect; clear skies, mild temperature and the dogs loved it.
The sweepstakes classes were judged by Mr Nymans partner, Mr Holgar Busk and there were five sweepstakes classes: Baby Puppy, Puppy, Non Champion, Champion and Veteran. All were well supported.
My thanks go to our photographer Jo Meadows, who managed to take great photos despite the darkness.

Congratulations to Beryl and Jo Hession on gaining Mundos title at just under 12 months of age. On the way to his title he has won multiple in Group and in Show awards and he looks to have a big future in front of him.
Dogs on Show
14th June – Erskine Park Showgrounds
This year our club will be taking part in the Dogs On Show event at Erskine Park on the 14th of June. We will be having a small stall to promote the breeds, with pamphlets and things to hand out.

The Basset Griffon Vendeen Club of NSW
We will need more things to decorate the stand so if you have any posters, flags etc that you think are appropriate, it would be great if you could lend them for the day.
We have already got a number of people volunteering to man to stand, but if anyone else would like to come along and help, they would be most welcome. If you think that you can come, contact the secretary Claire Parker [email protected] .au .
Special thanks must go to Helen Stanford, who is providing a gazebo for the day.
