Phases of Matter Project Due _______________
• Objective:
o In this unit you have been introduced to the idea that matter is composed of atoms and molecules that are attracted to each other and in constant motion. You have explored the attractions and motion of atoms and molecules through experiments and observed the heating and cooling of a solid, liquid, and gas.
o Your goal is to create a product of all the information you have learned about the three main phases of matter (solid, liquid, and gas) on the “molecular level”.
o You can choose between four products for your project: § Brochure/Pamphlet § Cartoon/Comic Strip § Children’s Book § Trading Cards.
o Your task is to draw circles to represent the molecules in a solid, liquid, and gas at three different temperatures (hot, room, and cold) for a grand total of 9 diagrams.
• You must be sure that the molecules:
o Show the proper arrangement of the molecules. o Show motion lines to represent their movement relative to each other
(moving faster or slower). o Show the difference in distance between the molecules when their
temperatures are hot, room and cold. o Include captions like “atoms faster and further apart” or “atoms slower and
closer together” to “more attraction between molecules” or “less attraction between molecules” to describe your drawings.
• In addition, your product must meet it’s particular criteria:
o Brochure/Pamphlet: at least 8.5” by 11”, must be in three-‐fold format, front fold has the title and picture, all pictures must have written text, and can be created on a computer.
o Cartoon/Comic Strip: at least 8.5” by 11”, at least nine cells, must have meaningful written text, and must include color.
o Children’s Book: must have a cover with book’s title and student’s name as author, must have at least 10 pages, each page should have an illustration to accompany the story, should be neatly written or typed, and can be created on the computer.
o Trading Cards: include at least 10 cards, each card should be at least 3” by 5”, each should have a colored picture, includes at least 2 facts on each card, all cards should have a picture on one side and information on the other, and all cards must be submitted in carrying bag.
