    The Postgraduate Diploma in Primary

Education (PGCE Advanced) will enable you

to teach in state-maintained and special

schools in England and Wales. It is designed

to enable you to become a reflective,

    confident practitioner having acquired a

    range of skills and expertise.

Based on the experiences of our successful

    PGDipEd graduates, teacher training at

Birmingham has an excellent and proven

track record. Our courses are rigorous and

    challenging, forming an excellent preparation

for a successful career in teaching at

primary level. We offer two options: general

Primary (5-11yrs) and Early Years (3-7yrs).

    Entry requirements

We require graduates who have achieved

their first degree, normally at 2:1 level or

    higher. Some National Curriculum content

    within the degree is desirable.

In addition to this you will be required to have

a grade C in GCSE English, Mathematics and

Science, or equivalent on application. The

Department for Education (previously DCSF)require us to check original certificates; you

therefore cannot start teacher training unless

you already hold these qualifications. It is

essential that applicants have spent a

minimum of one week in a primary/ nursery

    school, working alongside and/or observing

classroom teachers at the time of applying.

You will also need to pass the Professional

Skills Tests (Numeracy and Literacy) prior to

    starting the course.

    Course content

The course has two parts and is designed

and delivered in partnership with local

schools. The university part develops your

    understanding of theoretical and practical

issues inherent in the classroom teaching of

subjects and whole school issues within the

    primary/foundation curriculum. Your school-

based practice enables you to apply what

you have learned in the classroom.

The following areas are covered by all

    students: Professional Studies

    English

    Mathematics

    Science

    Humanities

    Physical Education/Dance

    Music

    Ar t

    ICT

Our Early Years course has a particular

focus on issues relating to the Foundation

    Stage.

Our school-based placements enable you to

put into practice what you have learned and

to develop and refine your teaching skills.

You have the opportunity to work in different

schools and if you are on the general Primary

course you will have a placement in both Key

Stage one and two. If you are studying on the

Early Year route you will have a placement in

both Key Stage one and Foundation stage.

Our partnership schools vary in size, phase

and context, giving you the opportunity to

broaden your teaching experience. You are

fully supported while on teaching practice byschool mentors and our university tutors. By

the end of the course you will have the

necessary experience and support to begin

your career as a primary teacher.

    Assessment

All students are required to pass their

teaching practice which is assessed and

moderated towards the end of term 3 (School

Placement 3). You have to complete six

modules, five of which require a written

    assignment and several school-based tasks.

All written work is required to achieve a pass

mark or above for satisfactory completion of

the course. In addition all students have to

pass the Standards for the Award of

    Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

    Progression and employability

    Our course is designated postgraduate

which means it is assessed at masters level

providing our students with the head start

they need to set them apart from other

graduates. On successful completion of this

course you will be awarded 120 credits

    (many other university teacher training

courses only award up to 60 credits at

masters level) and recommended for QTS.

    For those students who successfully

complete their NQT induction year there is a

further opportunity to transfer credits to theMEd course which is awarded on completion

of a 60 credit dissertation (transfer is subject

to a satisfactory reference from your

    university tutor and induction tutor).

We have an excellent record of students

gaining jobs at the end of our course, many

with our partnership schools where they

    progress to be senior managers.
