Peter’s Pence October 2013

The Vision of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church is to Love All as Christ Loves Us. Our Mission is to be a Joyful, Welcoming Community that Expresses the Redeeming Love of God in Christ

through the Ministry, Gifts and Spiritual Development of Every Person.

October 2013

Dear St. Peter’s, Three years ago St. Peter’s purchased the property and home at 1926 Prince Street. It was an act of faith—faith that one day a new parish hall would be built at 925 Mitchell Street and we would need more green space, faith that we could invest existing funds for the future of St. Peter’s, and, most of all, faith that God was calling us into ministry in new and exciting ways. In 2012 we began our capital campaign, Catch the Vision. Through the generosity of the people of St. Peter’s and of Charles Morgan, we raised enough funds to proceed with the renovation of what has been known as the Ledbetter House. On October 6th at 4 pm, following the Blessing of the Animals, the bishop will bless the renovated home, the work that has been done there, and the ministry that will take place in that location for years to come. From now on, the home will be called “the Morgan House,” in memory of Don and Betty Morgan. I did not have the honor of knowing Don or Betty; Betty passed away a few months before I came to St. Peter’s. However, through the stories I hear of their dedication and service to this church, I feel I have a sense of them. More than once I’ve heard the first pew of the transept described as “the place where Betty Morgan sat.” Don and Betty Morgan have left an indelible stamp on this congregation even as new people enter and become part of the St. Peter’s community. Building on their generosity and welcoming presence, we dedicate the Morgan House to be a place of learning, gathering, and community. So many people have spent countless hours working on this project. I give thanks for the Ledbetter Committee: Chris Odom, Marianne Welch, Steve Hurd, Katie Kilpatrick, Jerry Adams, Dale Walker, Ric Readnour, Mike King, Tom McNutt, Carolyn Scott, and Jeff Hulett. Ric Readnour has served as our general contractor for the renovation, and Dale Walker has spent more hours in physical labor on this project than one can imagine. And, finally, much gratitude goes to Andrew Hybl for overseeing this project with diligence, patience, and faith. Without the work of these people and countless others, this home could never have become the place of ministry that we now celebrate. Many thanks to you all. As we look forward with excitement to the possibilities in front of us, please join us on October 6th at 4 pm for the blessing of the Morgan House!

Peace, Teri

Catch the Vision Campaign Update It’s time for another quarterly Catch the Vision capital campaign update. The collection phase of the campaign continues to go well, thanks to all of you. At this writing, nine months into a three-year campaign, we’ve collected 44% of the $766,000 pledged amount. That is simply stupendous. As always, what’s more important than any figure on dollars collected is our ability to enhance important ministries because of these funds. A desire to sustain and improve the many important ministries and outreach initiatives of St. Peter’s has always been the driving force behind the campaign, and through your generosity we’ve been able to do exactly that. These ministries include:

The Morgan House: After years of hoping and planning and dreaming, the Morgan House, directly across from St. Peter’s on Prince Street, is about to become a beautiful new actuality. Remodeling work that began in earnest over the summer is almost finished, and the house is just about ready for its grand opening celebration on October 6. A small list of all the improvements carried out this summer would include: making level the foundation; putting in new dry wall; installing new windows; sanding, staining, and reinstalling the flooring; painting the interior; installing new siding on the exterior; and installing all new bathroom fixtures and kitchen appliances. All these improvements were paid for out of capital campaign funds.

The Morgan House will be a lovely, comfortable space for St. Peter’s to use in a variety of ways but none more important than as a classroom area, hang out space, first class kitchen, and effective headquarters for our youth and young adult ministries. With the Morgan House as its base there is almost no limit to how these ministries can grow. And none of this would have been realized without funds from Catch the Vision.

Music Ministry: You may have noticed on recent Sundays that our fabulous St. Peter’s choir is sounding even better! Thanks to infusion of Catch the Vision funds, and with some expert recommendations from our Music Director Patty Oeste, the choir has added two powerful new vocalists that make an already exquisite listening pleasure a palpable honor.

Community Awareness: This summer, supported by Catch the Vision funds, St. Peter’s kicked off a new web site that features some beautiful photographs taken at St. Peter’s by local pro Mike Kemp. The web site is designed to heighten awareness of who we are and all that we do. Check it out at: stpetersconway.org.

In addition to enhancing these vital ministries, capital campaign contributions have played a crucial role in staff development and the maintenance and repair of our core facilities. To recognize the value of Catch the Vision to St. Peter’s staff development one need look no further than the presence of our curate Andrew Hybl, half of whose salary is paid for out of CTV funds. Andrew not only plays a vital role every Sunday in our worship services but he has been the single most important factor in the growth of, and long term planning for, our youth and young adult ministries. Speaking of staff development, capital campaign contributions have also allowed the church to replace some extremely dated office equipment. Our parish administrator and bookkeeper are now able to do their vital jobs with the help of their equipment rather than having to fight with that equipment. In regards to facility upkeep, St. Peter’s has been a hive of activity in recent months as we’ve made important repairs to our equipment and given dearly needed facelifts to our buildings. This maintenance work includes repairs to the window frames in the parish hall, new paint inside and outside the parish hall, new paint on outside of the church, and, especially appreciated during the warm months, repairs to our air conditioning system. Without the latter it would have been a very hot summer indeed! As you can see, because of your generosity, St. Peter’s has not only been able to perceive a better future but to live more effectively, actively, and healthily in the present. Please remember to stay up to date on your capital campaign pledges, so we can keep the momentum going. Thank you! Jeannie Stroth John Vanderslice Catch the Vision BRIDGE team leaders

Here I Am Lord: Offering Our Lives Through Prayer

Prayer is our response to God. Through prayer as worship, we draw closer to God. Through prayer as study, we increase our understanding of who God is and our relationship with God. Through prayer as action, our prayers become grounded in service and in the living out of our baptismal covenant. Come away from life’s hectic busyness for this reflective overnight retreat as we explore these facets of prayer. All are welcome, wherever you are on your spiritual journey. Keynote speaker: Rev. Bill Wright Workshop presenters: Rev. Joyce Dalton, Rev. Ben Helmer, Mr. Jon Musser The retreat is a ministry of Arkansas Episcopal Cursillo and is open to everyone. Join us at Camp Mitchell, October 18-19, 2013. The cost is $85 for housing, meals and materials. Registration forms are available in the lobby.

Help Out the Food Pantry

Two weeks ago our food pantry provided staples for 75 families. Simultaneously, the Log Cabin Democrat ran an article identifying Arkansas as number one nationally in hunger. We are an honest reflection of the statistic. People are hungry and need help with ever increasing costs of rent and utilities -- daily needs every family has. The funds which underwrite the costs for the listed needs are gone.... Please step up to the plate and help us continue to have food and funds available for those in need. Keep the published list handy when you shop, be generous when you are able, and help continue our parish stewardship of nutrition to those in need. Please remember, if you can feed your family will you help someone who is hungry?--Norma Smothers

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Vestry Summary August 18, 2013 Attendees: Douglas Young, John Shute, Andrew Hybl, Kitson Roger, Wayne Stengel, Jerry Adams, Sylvia Walker, Teri Daily, John Vanderslice, Jeanetta Darley, Warren Readnour Opening Prayer: Teri Daily Approval of Minutes from Last Meeting—Jerry made a motion to accept minutes as presented, motion seconded and all approved. Committee and Ministry Reports 1. Ledbetter House—Andrew Hybl An exciting week coming up! The foundation has been

completed, structural beams and floor joists have been replaced as well. All new commercial code electric has been installed, insulation is installed, windows are in and leveled. Tomorrow, sheet rock and ceilings go in. To date, we have spent $48,423.83, which includes everything thus far. A HUGE thank you to Ric Readnour and Dale Walker for all their time and commitment to this project. Dale has over 400 hours in working on the trim alone. Expenses going forward (see attached handout) estimate @ $80K. The project will likely be completed under budget. The house is also ADA compliant. Grand opening is slated for October 6th, and the bishop will be here, as well as Charles Morgan. That day is also The Blessing of the Animals.

1. Food Pantry—Sylvia Walker Approximately 135 families have been served this month. Wayne

asked when we see our highest number of clients at the pantry, and it is usually the first Saturday of the month. Summer is always higher traffic because schools are out.

1. Labyrinth Committee—Teri Daily The committee met for a third time this past week. The big

decision next will be the type of material used: stained concrete or the synthetic kits. Right now we are at circular labyrinth in the courtyard, with emphasis on traditional. The goal is to hopefully have it ready by Advent. Some funds are already available, but more will be needed. Ballpark figure is for everything is approximately $14K.

1. Finance Committee—John Shute Reports distributed and presented. The endowment accounts

are in the process of being opened. Jerry moved that we accept financials as presented, John seconded the motion and all approved.

New computer for Kitson’s office: Sylvia made a motion to purchase a new computer given that the current one does not function well; the motion was seconded and all approved. Funding will come from capital campaign funds under Staff Development category.

Business Items 1. College Ministry—Andrew Hybl At the conference in Chicago, Andrew met with Sam McDonald,

who is overseeing a large grant for college ministries. St. Peter’s is a high contender for some grant funding for our current college ministry. We are an off-campus church that draws students to our location. St. Peter’s has the most successful college dinner ministry in the province. $20,170/year was applied for, for a period of three years. The application has been completed and sent for consideration and processing. We should know sometime in October.

1. Christian Formation for the upcoming year: Children and Youth—Andrew Hybl: EYC

schedule for the fall has been printed on a laminated card with a fridge magnet on the back.

Page 17: Peters Pence October 2013

Andrew’s goal for this year is to put lots of energy into the Wednesday evening program. A parent’s youth council has been established. Adult formation—Teri Daily Bible study will start back up the Monday after Labor Day. EFM: 19 people are signed up currently, which will necessitate two classes. Gail Kirkland and Jane Harris will, hopefully, take over some of the mentoring over the next two years. Servant Leadership: Merry Helen is doing an amazing job, with help from Carolyn Scott, Nita Brown, Rita Mackintosh, Amanda Moore, and others. The communion class is finishing up, with a compassion class starting in January. Adult Forum: Jane Harris is overseeing this class. Preschoolers: Erica Windsor will head up this program. It will take place either on Sunday morning or Wednesday evenings.

1. Vestry Retreat: September 13th and 14th We will be able to go to Katrina Wilcox’s house again

this year. The 14th is also Brooks Cato’s ordination, so timing for the retreat will need to be revisited.

2. Possible Gumbo Cook Off There is discussion about a gumbo cook off to benefit the food pantry.

Tentative date is March 1st. Booths will be set up on Mitchell Street. This is may be a good draw for professional cooks. Dee has already checked with the school, the police department and the health department about what needs to be done to get this event off the ground. Our main expense will mostly be advertising and possibly table rental.

Rector’s Report—Teri Daily 1. New Writing Group: This will be led by Liz Larson and Stephanie Vanderslice. 2. Contemplative Prayer on Sunday evenings: Amanda Moore, Teri and Merry Helen have met

and discussed contemplative prayer in the Quaker tradition, which is mostly silent prayer. The Parker Palmer method will be utilized, and being Episcopalians, there will be a short opening and closing liturgy.

3. Walk through the Narthex: Field Trip to the Narthex.... To be discussed at the next Vestry

meeting. 4. Sharing Our Bounty: No funds were received this Sunday. Jeanetta will run the information again

next week. 2. A Truck for Bishop Carlos/Guatemala Mission: St. Mark’s in Little Rock, Grace in Siloam

Springs, St. Paul’s in Fayetteville and St. Peter’s want to purchase a truck for Bishop Carlos. The cost will be @ $2500.00, so $625.00/church.
