September 2013 Dear St. Peter’s,

I have been at St. Peter’s for only five years, and yet it seems that in some way I know people who were gone before I ever arrived. I hear of their love for the church, where they sat during services, and their dedication to the vestry, altar guild, building projects, or other parishioners. I see the smiles on the faces of those who talk about them, and the affection becomes contagious. It is palpable, this feeling of connection with a St. Peter’s past that I have never personally experienced.

And I am filled with gratitude—gratitude for the work and funds that went into building our beautiful worship space, gratitude for difficult decisions that had to be made and perseverance during hard times, gratitude for past laughter that still permeates these walls, and gratitude for the many hours hands have arranged flowers, pushed a lawnmower, carried a cross in an opening procession, cared for our children at St. Peter’s, made beautiful sounds on an organ, stuffed envelops, and been folded in prayer. All of these acts of love done in this place over the past seventy years have made us who we are today.

As each of these members of St. Peter’s lovingly cared for this place and those in it, they were, in essence, paying it forward to all of us. In the words of a well-known saying, they were planting trees under whose shade they would not sit.

Later this month you will receive a letter announcing the establishment of the St. Peter’s Endowment Fund, a fund set aside to enable future ministries at St. Peter’s. You will be offered the opportunity to learn about the ways you can ―plant a tree under whose shade you may not sit.‖ For just as we think and plan for the futures of our families, we are called to do the same for our church.

I invite you to learn about the St. Peter’s Endowment Fund in the coming months, and to prayerfully consider the many and diverse ways available to participate in the future ministry of St. Peter’s. The members of the St. Peter’s Endowment Fund Board—Eric Hutchinson, Jerry Adams, Tom Grumbles, Jeannie Stroth, and Andrea Woods—will be wonderful resources as we move forward together. May we pass on to the generations who will come after us the same love, blessings, and possibilities for ministry that we have received from the faithful hands of those who came before us. Although 1st through 12

grades meet each Wednesday evening for Christian formation, our preschool- and kindergarten -aged children will continue to meet each Sunday morning from 10-10:45 am in Room 5 on the Christian Education hallway. Erika Windsor will be leading the class, and they will be following the Living the Good News curriculum. All children from three years of age through kindergarten are invited to attend, so please join us for a fun time learning about God!

EYC & JEYC (Episcopal Youth Community & Jr. Episcopal Community) meet on Wednesday nights from 5:30pm-7pm for grades 1-12 and are led by The Rev. Andrew Hybl. The Rev. Andrew Hybl will be leading a youth confirmation class beginning on Sunday, September 15th from 12:30-2:00 p.m. Throughout this six week course our youth will explore their faith on a deeper level. As a group we will explore the History of the Episcopal Church, Holy Scripture, Sacraments, spirituality, and service in the world. Confirmation with Bishop Benfield will be on Sunday, October 27th at 11:00 a.m.

Sunday Morning Adult Christian Education 8:45 am - Exploring the Roots of Religion (Library) This year we are listening to and discussing a course in Exploring the Roots of Religion by Professor John Hale of the University of Louisville. The format will include a 30 min. lecture, followed by discussion of how ancient practices have influenced our thoughts today. Sharing Our Bounty

Stewardship in the Diocese of Arkansas works according to the 10/10/10 guide—an individual/family gives 10% of their income to the local parish, the local parish then gives 10% of the gifts it receives to the diocese, and the diocese gives 10% of what it receives to the national church. Sharing Our Bounty is a program to fund specific ministries in the Diocese of Arkansas by gifts from the parish that are above and beyond that congregation’s tithe. In other words, we give to these ministries out of the remaining 90%--out of our abundance. In addition to our tithe to the diocese, St. Peter’s has pledged $2000 to be given to the Sharing Our Bounty ministries, $500 to each ministry. This is money that does not come from our operational budget. The Sharing Our Bounty ministries consist of the following:

1) Camp Mitchell – Gifts to this ministry provide additional upkeep and operational funds for this beautiful camp that has touched the lives of so very many Episcopalians in this diocese, as well as those who come from other dioceses.

2) The New Generation Fund – The New Generation Fund is designed to support curates in

Arkansas, build new congregations, and enrich our diocese through education for both lay and clergy.

3) Youth and Young Adult Ministries – This fund supports many ministries for youth and young

adults in this diocese, including St. Peter’s college dinners.

4) Hispanic Ministries -- Some congregations in our diocese are developing Hispanic ministries; All Saints’ in Bentonville is one of these congregations with a large Hispanic presence within the congregation.

Please prayerfully consider if you would like to support our $2000 pledge to Sharing Our Bounty with monetary gifts in addition to those you have already pledged to St. Peter’s operating or capital funds. If so, simply write a check with ―Sharing Our Bounty‖ on the memo line and drop it in the offering plate, or mail it to St. Peter’s. Thank you!

Bank, Tuesday, August 17. The Pantry appreciates the many fresh vegetables received from the garden behind the Faulkner County Library and Armstead Farms (a vendor through Conway Locally Grown).

Help Out the Food Pantry

Jesus fed a crowd with five barley loaves and two fishes. He did not state that there wasn’t enough for all. Instead everyone was fed and there were leftovers; much to the amazement of the disciples. We are suggesting that you bring the identified items from a posted grocery list when you come to church on Sunday and place them in a provided food pantry container. Each St. Peter’s family contribution to the pantry’s needs will create an inventory for those who come for help. Keep the published list handy when you shop, be generous when you are able, and help continue our parish stewardship of nutrition to those in need. Please remember, if you can feed your family will you help someone who is hungry?--Norma Smothers

UPDATE I've come to the realization that the term "building project" when properly translated, means "crash course in humility & patience." This can be a challenging lesson to learn in a society that often revolves around instant gratification. Yet, there is light at the end of the tunnel and we are heading toward the finish line with the Ledbetter House! This project is a great accomplishment for St. Peter's and will serve our community for generations to come.

I'm sure you have noticed there is a lot of activity going on at the Ledbetter House. With each passing day you are able to witness the construction project taking shape. I wanted to update everyone on the work that has gone into the house recently:

• A significant amount of time was spent on restoring the foundation of the house. Twenty-six concrete piers were strategically placed under the house as well as having the structural beams & floor joists replaced. By doing so, all floors throughout the house were able to be leveled.

• All windows in the house have been replaced and installed.

• The house has been re-wired with commercial grade electric.

• Central heat & air has been installed.

• Brand new insulation throughout the house has been installed.

• All plumbing has been replaced.

• Dry wall & ceiling have been installed and are ready for painting.

• After 400 hours of labor, Dale Walker was able to remove & restore all of the original trim. The trim is currently being installed & painted.

• All wood on the front porch has been replaced, reinforced & new front steps as well as an ADA ramp are currently being installed to meet city code.

• External siding is currently being installed.

As you can see, things are definitely moving in the right direction at the Ledbetter House. The restoration of the Ledbetter House is truly an "All Parish" project in which everyone in our St. Peter's community plays a key role. Faithful & generous giving allowed for the project to begin. Countless hours from volunteers have played a key role in keeping our costs within budget & have provided oversight throughout the demolition phase & construction phase. The Ledbetter Committee has been involved in each phase of decision making to ensure the project stays on course & that we are good stewards of the money entrusted to the project. Lastly, everyone at St. Peter's will play a vital role in the ministries that take place in and through the Ledbetter House. Please join us at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 6th as Bishop Benfield joins us for a Grand Opening & Blessing of the House. Prayer is our response to God. Through prayer as worship, we draw closer to God. Through prayer as study, we increase our understanding of who God is and our relationship with God. Through prayer as action, our prayers become grounded in service and in the living out of our baptismal covenant. Come away from life’s hectic busyness for this reflective overnight retreat as we explore these facets of prayer. All are welcome, wherever you are on your spiritual journey. Keynote speaker: Rev. The Servant Leadership School of Conway invites participants to deeper relationship with God and with others in community, as we explore the inward journey of personal transformation and the outward journey of sacred service. Our hope is to nurture a generation of Christian leadership which brings renewal to our churches, creates life-giving alternatives in the workplace and the home, calls forth creative new ministries to serve our local community, and helps to shape our future in accordance with God's dream for the world. Leigh Ann Warriner -Leigh Ann Warriner is a licensed massage therapist who practices in Conway. She is a member of St. Peter's where she has worn many hats over the years including everything from senior warden to gumbo chef. Leigh Ann will present

o The Power of Touch - As a massage therapist we are trained that "touch follows intention".

We touch for many reasons; to comfort, to get attention, to assist or aid others, to control. Why do you touch? Why don't you touch? We will spend some time exploring the power of touch and look at its various forms. We will also explore "touch" without physically touching. Did you know you can touch using your mind and energy? You are invited to participate to whatever level you feel comfortable. Please wear loose fitting clothes that will allow you to move easily and sit comfortably on the floor.

Merry Helen Hedges – Merry Helen Hedges is a deacon in the Episcopal Church USA. She received her theological training at The Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest and Memphis Theological Seminary. Merry Helen is also a Spiritual Director studying at The School of Christian Spirituality at General Theological Seminary, New York City, and the Benedictine Abbey at Pecos, New Mexico. Mary Helen will present

o Celtic Spirituality, Praying With the Earth - There will be plenty of time Saturday to ―relax,

rejoice and rejuvenate‖, so bring your hiking shoes, yarn, books, or whatever you use to soothe your spirit. Saturday will end with Evening Prayer and a bonfire with smores!

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Vestry Meeting July 28, 2013

Attendees: Jeanetta Darley, Kitson Roger, Teri Daily, John Vanderslice, Sylvia Walker, Scotty Bell, Carolyn Scott, Douglas Young, Chris Odom, Wayne Stengel, Jerry Adams

Opening Prayer--Teri Daily Approval of Minutes from Last Meeting: Scotty made a motion to accept the minutes as presented. Jerry seconded and all approved. Report from Michaelene Miller’s Discernment Committee--Chris Odom Chris was the Vestry liason on Michaelene’s discernment committee. Their final meeting was held approximately two weeks ago up at Camp Mitchell. All committee members feel that Michaelene is ready to move on to seminary. In the fall, Micah will be serving in the Episcopal Service Corps in St. Louis doing community building. Teri asked the Vestry to approve the report and support the Discernment Committee’s recommendation. A motion was made, all seconded and all approved. Next the report will go to the Bishop. Committee and Ministry Report 1. Ledbetter House--Teri Daily for Andrew Hybl (who is at Camp Mitchell): Things are moving

along well. The foundation has been repaired, termite damage repaired. Chris Odom and Steve Hurd will be picking out appliances and colors. The project should come in under budget. October 6th is a possible date for The Blessing of the Animals, and the Bishop can be here to consecrate the house. Teri would like to invite the university chaplains to participate as well. The Green Cart Deli has already been lined up to cater the event. The surrounding neighbors will be invited as well.

Sylvia noted that there is poison ivy growing on the large tree in the back. It is also growing along the fence between the Ledbetter House and the Lance’s house. Jeanetta will address this with Newt Guenard.

1. Food Pantry--Sylvia Walker: The pantry served @ 100 households in June, @ 25 of them new

families. August the 13th, the Arkansas Food Bank will come and inspect the pantry and we will then be independent from First United Methodist Church.

1. Labyrinth Committee--Teri Daily: The committee has met twice to date. The labyrinth will be in

memory of Steele Hays. It will be located in the courtyard. Some members of the committee have gone to other churches and around the state to look at the design of other labyrinths. The committee still needs to decide on color and materials.

1. Community Awareness Committee--Teri Daily: The committee met with Jaman Matthews and

Randall Curtis from the diocesan office to discuss public relations/advertising. Jeanetta Darley went to a web-building workshop up in Fayetteville this past weekend--our new website design is coming along nicely.

1. Finance Committee--John Shute: Balance Sheet, Profit and Loss: Budget vs. Actual, and Consolidated Capital Campaign spreadsheet reports all reviewed. Finances are holding their own right now, which is impressive for it being the middle of the summer.

Teri thanked John and Kitson for all their work. John Vanderslice made a motion to accept the financials as requested, seconded and all approved.

Business Items 1. Boy Scout Request--Teri Daily: Teri was contacted by Rob Hay, a Boy Scout coordinator, asking

if we would sponsor a Cub Scout pack. The pack’s current sponsoring church is no longer planning to participate as a scout sponsor. Teri emailed Rob for more information about the pack. John Shute volunteered to be a church liaison between the pack and the church. The Vestry feels very good about Teri’s moving forward in getting more information and possibly sponsoring this pack. Teri will include John Shute in all future email correspondence.

1. Believe Out Loud--Teri Daily: Teri discussed St. Peter’s registering as a ―Believe Out Loud‖

congregation. We basically go on a registry that states we welcome members without regard to sexual orientation. We would need to have an inclusion statement. Liz Larson wrote an inclusion statement that would go on our website. (handout given to Vestry) Carolyn moved that we become a Believe Out Loud congregation. The motion was seconded and all approved.

2. Vestry Retreat--Teri Daily: Location is still to be determined. Teri needs to check with Dinah

Reed about the availability of Katrina Wilcox’s house up in Heber Springs. If Katrina’s house isn’t available, Scotty Bell has offered his lake house. One main topic of conversation will be the book handed out at last month’s vestry meeting.

Rector’s Report--Teri Daily: Andrew will be gone for the next two weeks. Teri leaves next Sunday for Camp MItchell but will be back for Wednesday evening service. The funds have not been physically moved to the endowment account. Good news is that the $15K seed money given for part of the endowment will be unspecified funds, which means that they can be added to at any time. Some of our Christian Ed funds have gone to purchase a smart TV for the Library. It has wifi capability, which will help for meetings that require projections. Junior Warden’s Report--Scotty Bell: The shelving project has been started in the kitchen. Sylvia and Tom McNutt did a walk-through to discuss changes. No windows will be covered. Cubbies will be more than adequate to store what we have currently. New lighting is also going to be installed. A few work counters will also be installed. Tom McNutt will investigate the cost of plywood, etc. Jerry asked if they will have doors on them, which they won’t for space and simplicity. Scotty has also been talking with Jeanetta about purchasing a white board. Prices range from approximately $150-275.00. This will be for a functional master church calendar. The leak in the roof over Andrew’s office will cost over $1000.00. Scotty needs to get another quote. The roof over the food pantry also needs work. Vents need to be installed under the parish hall to help with standing water. Ric Readnour has suggested that we do all the work at one time instead of piece-meal. Jerry feels confident in letting Scotty and the Junior Warden’s committee move forward with these repairs/improvements. Jerry made a motion that for this period of the Ledbetter renovation

that we forego the second quote requirement and let the committee move forward with these repairs. Wayne seconded the motion and all approved. Senior Warden’s Report--John Vanderslice: Welcome back, John!! (jet lag and all) John asked if there will be more guest musicians coming in since we have capital campaign funds to do this.
