It boils down to Know, Like and Trust!
Whether a business is online or offline, the common denominator since the beginning of time is that people buy from people
Whether you’re offline or online, these principles apply.
The key is getting people into your marketing funnel so they can begin to
know like and trust you! It’s important to understand this concept,
so let me give you an example…
So one day you see an ad that Best Buy is having a huge sale on a particular DVR. You’ve been wanting a DVR for a long time but you were waiting for just the right time to buy it – so once you’ve seen the ad you hurry to Best Buy to purchase one before they’re all gone.
This is known as a frontend offer
Alright, so let’s take a look at what else happens while we’re at Best Buy
purchasing the DVR
You probably continue to shop and end up purchasing more items. Now these additional items weren’t necessarily on sale, but you became comfortable shopping there, because of the trust they’ve gained by offering you such a great deal. And now you’ve made a conscious decision to purchase more.
These additional items are know as the backend offers
Alright, so what does all this mean?
Best Buy used the DVR as a frontend offer
In truth; they probably barely broken even and may have even taken a strategic loss on that DVR. (Also known as a “Loss Leader”) And the reasons businesses do this is
really very simple: to get you into their marketing funnel where they have the
chance to develop the relationship more!
Remember; people buy from people!By taking a loss of offering a free or low-
cost incentive, they now have the opportunity to…
Introduce you to their friendly & knowledgeable staffExperience the quality of their productsYou saw the Geek Squad – which helps to establish their credibility as an computer & electronics resource – and this sets them apart from their competition Begin to build a relationship with you
And???
Chances are you stayed longer than you originally planned and bought more items (Remember the Backend Offer?).You may have also chatted with the Apple Sales Rep, and even chatted with the guy or gal selling the 60” Flat Panel TV (future Backend Sales Opportunities for Best Buy!)
So you’ve probably figured it out by now that Frontend Offers are what gives retailers an opportunity to show off their store and to start building relationships with their customers…
And that Backend Offers are where they make their profit…
