Doctrine of Laying on of Hands
Hebrews 6:1-2Therefore leaving the
principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the
foundation of repentance from dead
works, and of faith toward God, Of the
doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of
hands, and of resurrection of the
dead, and of eternal judgment.

9 Characteristics of the Laying on of Hands
1. Transference of Sin2. Offering the Scapegoat
3. Ordination Services4. Special Blessing
5. Receiving an Inheritance6. Passing & Sparing Judgment
7. Healing of the Sick8. Impartation of Spiritual Gifts
9. Divine Mandate & Commission
1. Transference Of Sins
Scriptural References: Exodus 29:10 Leviticus 1:4; 3:2, 8, 13; 4:15.
1. TRANSFERENCE OF SIN
And thou shalt cause a bullock to be brought before the
tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron and his sons shall
put their hands upon the head of the bullock. And thou shalt
kill the bullock before the LORD, [by] the door of the
tabernacle of the congregation. Exodus 29:10-11
1. Transference Of Sins
And the LORD called unto Moses, and spake unto him out of the tabernacle of the
congregation, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man of you bring an offering unto the LORD, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, [even] of the herd,
and of the flock. If his offering [be] a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male
without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of
the congregation before the LORD. And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt
offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him. Leviticus 1:1-4
1. Transference Of Sins
The doctrine of laying on of hands was practiced in the Old Testament. The Aaronic priests were purified for service to God through the transferal
of their sins to a bull. Similarly, when an Israelite presented a peace or a sin offering, he laid his hands
upon the animal being offered, identifying himself with it and
transferring his guilt to the animal. Thus, the animal was set apart by
God through the laying on of hands.
The identification process required
faith.
Typology of the Offerings
Lamb: Christ as our peace offering
– Romans 5:1
Goat: Christ as our sin offering –
Galatians 3:13
Bull: Christ as the faithful servant -
Hebrews 3:1-6
Ram: Christ as our substitute – 2
Corinthians 5:21
2. The ScapegoatScriptural References: Leviticus 16:7-10, Mark 1,
John 1
2. The Scapegoat
And he shall take the two goats, and present them before the LORD [at] the door of the tabernacle of
the congregation. And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for
the LORD, and the other lot for the scapegoat. And
Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the LORD'S lot
fell, and offer him [for] a sin offering. But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the
scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the
LORD, to make an atonement with him, [and]
to let him go for a scapegoat into the
wilderness. Leviticus 16:7-10
2. The Scapegoat
John the Baptist (a Levite priest) prophetically
proclaimed Jesus as the our scapegoat.
Immediately after being identified as such Jesus was led of the Spirit into
the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
Scriptural References:
John 1, Mark 1
3. Ordination Services
Scriptural References: Numbers 8:10; Numbers 27:16-23; Deuteronomy 34:9.
3. Ordination Services
And thou shalt bring the Levites before the LORD: and
the children of Israel shall
put their hands upon the Levites: And Aaron
shall offer the Levites
before the LORD [for] an
offering of the children
of Israel, that they may
execute the service of the
LORD. Number 8:10-
11
The Levities were
ordained to the ministry
of the priesthood through the laying on of
hands.
3. Ordination ServicesLet the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation, Which may go out before them, and which may go in before them, and which may lead them out, and which may bring them in; that the congregation of the LORD be not as sheep which
have no shepherd. And the LORD said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom [is] the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him; And set him before Eleazar the priest, and before
all the congregation; and give him a charge in their sight. And thou shalt put [some] of thine honour upon him, that all the
congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient. And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall ask [counsel] for
him after the judgment of Urim before the LORD: at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, [both] he, and all
the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation. And Moses did as the LORD commanded him: and he took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation:
And he laid his hands upon him, and gave him a charge, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses. Numbers 27:16-23
3. Ordination Services
Moses laid his hands upon Joshua,
signifying the transferal of some of his authority to lead the nation.
This rite of ordination was
always accompanied by a special commission
and the giving of special authority.
4. Special Blessing
Scriptural References: Genesis 48:12-20; Psalm 139:4-6; Mark 10:13-16; Luke 18:15-
17.
4. Special Blessing
And Joseph brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed
himself with his face to the earth. And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel's left hand,
and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel's right hand, and brought [them]
near unto him….verse 20 And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee
shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh: and
he set Ephraim before Manasseh. Genesis 48:12-20
Jacob laid his hands on his grandsons' heads to confer God's blessing upon them.
4. Special Blessing
For [there is] not a word in my tongue, [but], lo, O LORD,
thou knowest it altogether. Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine
hand upon me. [Such] knowledge [is] too wonderful
for me; it is high, I cannot [attain] unto it. Psalms
139:4-6
King David considered God's hand upon him as a blessing and comfort.
4. Special Blessing
And they brought unto him also
infants, that he would touch them:
but when [his] disciples saw [it],
they rebuked them.
Jesus blessed little children by laying His
hands on them.
5. Receiving an Inheritance
Scriptural References: Genesis 48:12-20, 1 Timothy 5:22
5. Receiving an Inheritance
Israel received the children of Joseph as his
own through the laying on of hands. A
believer can receive an
inheritance if he wants to through the laying on of
hands.
5. Receiving an Inheritance
Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither
be partaker of other men's sins:
keep thyself pure.1 Timothy 5:22
Believers can receive an
inheritance if they want it through the laying on of hands
6. Passing & Sparing Judgment
Scriptural References: Exodus 7:4; Leviticus 24:14; Deuteronomy 13:6-10: Genesis 22:12; Exodus 24:9-11.
6. Passing & Sparing Judgment
But Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you, that I may lay my hand upon Egypt, and bring forth mine armies, [and] my people the children of
Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great
judgments. Exodus 7:4
God laid His hands on Egypt in divine judgment by sending plagues. When trying a blasphemer, each witness placed his hands upon the guilty
person to signify his acceptance of the verdict. Conversely, when a victim was
spared death—as when God commanded Abraham not to sacrifice Isaac or when He allowed the leaders of Israel to see Him without dying—
mercy is described as hands not being laid on the spared victim.
6. Passing & Sparing Judgment
Bring forth him that hath cursed without the camp; and let all that heard him lay their hands upon his
head, and let all the congregation stone him.
Leviticus 24:14
And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither
do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing
thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from
me. Genesis 22:12
7. Healing of the Sick
Scriptural References: Matthew 9:18-30; Mark 6:5; 16:17-18; Luke 4:40; 13:10-13;
Acts 5:12; 28:8; James 5:14-15.
7. Healing of the Sick
While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler,
and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is
even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her,
and she shall live. And Jesus arose, and followed
him, and so did his disciples. And, behold, a
woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment:
For she said within herself, If I may but touch his
garment, I shall be whole.Matthew 9:18-21
7. Healing of the Sick
Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders
of the church; and let them pray over him,
anointing him with oil in the name of the
Lord:And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual
fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. James 5:14-16
7. Healing of the Sick
Jesus commissioned the church to lay
hands on the sick and to pray for their
healing. The physical act of laying on of hands as a point of
contact for releasing faith is scriptural and
powerful. The miraculous power to heal derives from the
authority of God’s Word.
8. Impartation of Spiritual Gifts
Scriptural References: Acts 9:17; 19:6; I Timothy 4:14; II Timothy 1:6-7
8. Impartation of Spiritual Gifts
Through the laying on of hands the gift of the Holy Spirit was
given to believers in the New Testament. Acts 8, Acts 9, Acts 19
Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was
fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the
name of the Lord Jesus.) Then laid they [their] hands on
them, and they received the Holy Ghost. Acts 8:15-17
8. Impartation of Spiritual Gifts
Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which
was given thee by prophecy, with the
laying on of the hands of the presbytery. 1
Timothy 4:14
Timothy received spiritual gifts through the
ministry of the laying on of
hands.
9. Divine Mandate & Commission
Scriptural References: Acts 6:3-6; 13:2-3 I Timothy 5:22
9. Divine Mandate & Commission
Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of
honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom,
whom we may appoint over this business. But we will
give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of
the word. And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and
Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: Whom they set before the apostles: and
when they had prayed, they laid [their] hands on them.
Acts 6:3-6
Laying on of hands is a
powerful ministry that God has
given the church today. This
minstry should be administered
under the direction and unction of the Holy Spirit as
well as through the clear
guidelines on the Word.
9. Divine Mandate & Commission
As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said,
Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work
whereunto I have called them. And when
they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. So they, being sent forth
by the Holy Ghost, departed unto
Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus. Acts 13 :2-4
9. Divine Mandate & Commission
Through the laying on of
hands the elders of the early
church commissioned the seven deacons to
minister to the widows as well as for Paul and Silas
for their missionary mandate.
