The Rocks AVA (American Viticulture Area) is situated on an alluvial fan of the Walla Walla River, where the river exits the foot-hills of the Blue Mountains and enters the Walla Walla Valley. It lies entirely within Or-egon and includes part of the town of Mil-ton-Freewater. Oregon’s newest AVA, The Rocks received its designation in 2015. The Rocks is typified by its unusual soil…or lack thereof. The ground consists primarily of dark-colored basalt cobblestones, ideal for drainage and encouraging vines to root deeply.
