Mr. Samuel Lee Woodard
Mr. Samuel Lee Woodward was amember of a pioneer family of HartCounty. He was the son of HenryPleasant and Eliza J. Woodward. Hewas born in 1876 and died on April 6,1959. He was one of eight children. Hehad three brothers and three half-brothers and a half-sister, with whom helived. They were James C., Clarence,George H., and half-brothers Wiley C.,John W., and Herbert S. His half-sisterwas Ilma, who married Mr. T.V. Walton.Mr. S.L. Woodward was in the SpanishAmerican War and World War 1. Heenlisted on August 25, 1902 for threeyears. He was discharged on August 24,1905.
While in the army, he served in thePhilippine Islands. In 1900, he wasstationed at Zamboonga. In 1910, hehad made first sergeant and was at FortWilliam McKinley, Rizal. In 1920, hewas back in the states stationed in St.Louis, Missouri. He must have been inthe army about twenty five years.
He went in the army as a pvt. andcame out a captain. His service was heldat the Pearl Webb Cemetery under thedirection of Williams, Miller, and SegoFuneral Home. He is buried in the PearlWebb Cemetery with many of his familymembers.

Mr. Simmy Louis Russell
Mr. Simmy Louis Russell was bornSeptember 29, 1893 in Hart County toMr. Abraham (Abb) W.S. and HattieGilmore (Brooks) Russell, both born inGreen County, Kentucky. He was oneof eight children: Nora, Wallie, Nell,
. Ernest, Kenneth L., Carry, and Mary B.Mary B. married Mr. Fred Davis andlived in Canmer. She worked forPioneer Bank as a bookkeeper. Hesigned his draft card on January 5, 1917to serve in World War I. He was intraining at Camp Taylor from September1917 to March 1918, when he sailedoverseas to France. He wrote home thatthey were worn and weary, but with suchofficers and men we shall someday getthe Huns. He was operating a machinegun, when he was hit and killed onAugust 8, 1918 on Chateau-Thierryfront.
He was survived by his mother, foursisters, and one brother, who was on theD.S.S. Florida. His body was returned
to his hometown of Canmer and buriedin the Pearl Webb Cemetery with otherfamily members.

Note: The top of his stone is a flag. Hisstone reads: 1st Class Pvt. Sim LouisRussell, Sept. 29, 1893 - Aug. 28, 1918.Enlisted Co. H. 126 Inf. Sept. 17, 1917.Killed in action at Soissons Aug. 28,1918.
Soissons is a little North of Paris.
