Take a look at some of
Paul Klee’s best known
work.
*What can you see?
*How has he created the
images?…think about
shapes, colours, what he
used e.g.
paint/chalk/pastel/pencil?
*Do you like it? Why?
*What might you try
yourself?
*What do you want to ask
him about the piece of
work?

Today we are
going to be
looking at Klee’s
most famous
painting…
Senecio• Senecio (Old Man)
was painted in 1922.
• Klee said that colour was energy and it created the mood and the feelings in a painting.
• What do you think the mood/feeling is in this painting?
Which colours match the
different feelings we have?
Make your own ‘feelings colour wheel’…
‘Senecio’
• Klee was proud of his
painting and its
‘childlike’ nature.
• He felt that childhood
was the most creative
and pure time of our
lives.
• Do you think that this
painting is childlike?
Why?
Florence Gefuhle Mary Gefuhle(Florence’s feelings) (Marys’s feelings)
• You are going to produce
your own version of
‘Senecio’, but it will be
called ‘Florence or Mary
Gefuhle’
• First we need to draw
Florence or Mary’s face in
a similar style to
Klee…remember to keep it
childlike! • (I’ve chosen to do Florence)
Florence Gefuhle(Florence’s feelings)
• Now we need to choose
the ‘feeling’ for the
picture…when during
Florence or Mary’s life will
your picture be based?
• How did she feel at this
time?
• Look on your ‘feelings
colour wheel…
Setting off to
Scutari Hospital = worried
Now use those colours for your chosen feeling to
paint your ‘Florence Gefuhle’ or ‘Mary Gefuhle’.
