NIA Located in the heart of
Philadelphia, the University of the arts radiates the creative energy associated with Broad and South streets. Yet until now, that energy has not manifested itself in architectural identity. In this proposal, program pieces dance around a path weaving up through the building, connecting students of different disciplines. The public are treated to the performance of the everyday lives of the students through a triangular window cut from the corner of the building, which simultaneously pays respect to the neighboring ministry. The student HUB is a place for people to work, interact, and view projects of budding artists.

K The main initiative of an art academy is to give travelling artists a haven for their studies in an environmentwith which they may or may not be familiar. For that reason, the temporary artist’s studio experience becomes the focus of the architectural program. In this design, the studios are treated with such prominence as they penetrate the facade and invokea push-pull dynamic with their residences. Similar spacial excercises are found in the residences themselves with their dual level plans, allowing for two seperate spacial indentities within a geometric whole; and in the focus public spaces, which are accessed by a staircase that weaves its way through the building and two lightwells, giving patrons glimpsesof their goal on their way to the exhibition at the summit. The building shares a similar relationship with the highine, giving pedestrians a glimpse into the minds of the artist while providing residents with social inspiration.

The rolling hills of central Pennsylvania are renowned for their fertile farmland. For that reason, it comes as little surprise that Penn State is one of the top agricultural schools in the country. This new building brings students closer to their science than ever by providing laboratory spaces in a new location: underground. For every visible above ground plant, there exists an immense root system below helping the plant obtain nutrients and stay grounded in its physical location. This dynamic is imitated in the design of this building. Uniquely deep green roof systems allow for the cultivation of plants directly above the labs where they are studies. Lightwell systems bring light into the building during the day, and exude a light glow out from the ground as students work after sundown. After a visitors journey through the building is complete, a funicular elevator is there at the bottom to bring you back to the surface.
