Welcome Message by Piet Vanden Bussche

“Primum non nocere” (Do not harm) has been for more than 2500 years one of the most known principles of medicine. Already in the Greek period and from then on, for ages, doing no harm to the patient has been the priority of doctors. In 1999 the IOM institute published its report ‘to err is human: Building a safer health system’ and now 25 years later the topic is still very important. It is a cornerstone of a health system of high quality. A lot of reports have been published since then, many of them about hospital care.

EQuiP, the European Association on Quality and Safety in General practice/Family Medicine now invites you to participate in a conference on Patient Safety in primary care.

If you are an expert, you are very welcome to share the experience, project, research, knowledge in your practice, university, college, regional organisation. If you want to learn about Patient Safety and what it is all about in primary care, you should be there to become an expert. The EQuiP has a tradition of plenary sessions with international experts, very interactive workshops and smaller groups to deepen knowledge and share your vision on this topic.

What is the role of the doctor and of the patient? How can the organisation of the health system and of your practice assure safer care? How do you learn from your faults and make sure these don’t happen again? How important is a healthy doctor for safe care? Can the computer help or be a threat? Which faults are the most important in general practice? Are vulnerable patients more at risk then others? Can we teach about safe care to students and trainees? These and a lot of other related topics can be addressed.

The organising committee looks forward to making this congress a life-changing experience towards safer care for all participants and their patients.

Piet Vanden Bussche EQuiP President

Welcome Message by Bohumil Seifert

Dear colleagues, friends, welcome to Prague! It is a great pleasure and honor for us, the EQuiP representatives of The Czech Society of General Practice, to host the EQuiP Closed Meeting and the EQuiP Conference here in Prague.

Prague is really becoming a GP promised city, taking into account the WONCA Europe 1997, the WONCA World 2013 and upcoming the WONCA Europe Conference in 2017. We also hosted twice the EQuiP Closed Meeting in 1997 and in 2007, and most recently the EURACT Meeting last year.

EQuiP Conference resolves an extremely hot and important topic of quality in primary care: patient safety. The top European experts in primary care quality and safety will give keynotes, lectures and organize workshops. We hope to hear “state of the art” expert lectures as well as to share individual experience and expertize of general practitioners from 24 countries around Europe.

The scientific programme looks very promising. But I hope that you will also find some time to enjoy beautiful Prague. The conference venue itself is a magnificent place which is located in the historical part of Prague.

We believe that you will create a relationship with our city and come again to the WONCA Europe Conference in June 2017.

European Society for Quality

and Safety in Family Practice

The European Society for Quality and Safety in Family Practice (EQuiP) is one of WONCA Europe’s network organisations. The aim of EQuiP is to contribute to the achievement of high levels of quality and safety of care for patients in general practice in all European countries.

EQuiP will endeavour to achieve this by offering a network structure for collaboration and exchange of expertise and methodology and by initiating projects on development and evaluation with regard to Quality Improvement (QI), which will be used here as the most comprehensive definition.

EQuiP has been involved in developing and disseminating a number of tools and methods for quality improvement in general practice – EUROPEP, European Practice Assessment (EPA), and The International General Practice Maturity Matrix. From 2012-2015, EQuiP devised a project about patient empowerment in general practice. In collaboration with three project partners, EQuiP has developed an eLearning course about Motivational Interviewing as intervention, based on a systematic review that identified MI as the most effective approach to support patient self-management.

EQuiP holds two meetings a year: An open meeting is held in a new country every Spring concerning quality improvement and patient safety matters, and a closed seminar is arranged in Zagreb (Croatia) every Fall, addressing organisational development and collaboration with members.

EQuiP currently has 61 individual and 13 organisational members from 25 European countries. Please join us and become a member of the best functioning GP-based network on quality and safety in the world. The EQuiP network has nine active working groups of experts within: e-health, equity, patient safety, patient empowerment, professional health, social media, teaching quality, tools & methods and quality circles. Learn much more about new tools, methods and research results through EQuiP events, which are the primary platform to connect with international experts. Will you be our 75th member?

Czech Society of General Practice Czech Medical Association of Jan Evangelista Purkyně

The Society of General Practice (SVL) is approaching its 40 years anniversary. It was founded two years after the general practice had been recognized as a medical specialty in the Czech Republic. Over the years the Society membership grew to almost 4500 from a total 5200 in the country.

The Society has created a platform for primary care research, CME, publications, the exchange of expertise, project development and implementation. It serves as a reference body for the Czech government, medical universities and postgraduate medical schools. The Society supports the development of academic departments of primary care at all eight medical faculties in the Czech Republic.

The information infrastructure system is based on regional coordinators, regular journal distribution and a website. A centre for guideline development established by the Society produces about ten practical guidelines a year. The Society is focused on quality and safety issues and recently supported a project of development of accreditation standards for primary care.

The Society has become an active member of WONCA. Representatives in WONCA networks and Special interest groups organized several meetings in Prague during last years. The Society hosts the EQuiP meeting for the third time.

The effort of an entire generation of Czech general practitioners culminated by the organization of the WONCA 2013 World Conference in Prague. The next challenge is the WONCA Europe Conference to be held in Prague in June 2017.
