There are four past tenses in
French. We have been studying
two:
1. the passé composé
2. the imperfect
3. the plus-que-parfait
4. the passé simple

le passé composéYou use the passé composé to describe:
• A specific action-J’ai mangé un sandwich.
• Sudden actions-Le téléphone a sonné.
• An action that took place at a specific point in
the past—Il a plu dimanche soir.
• An action with a limited duration-Il a plu pendant
quarante jours.

You use the imperfect...
To describe habitual actions in the
past—
Quand j’étais petite, j’allais à l‘écoletous les jours.
(When I was little, I used to go to school every day.)

You use the imperfect...• When there is a notion of description (age,
appearance, physical condition, location, time, weather, emotions, desires, and attitudes)
Quand j’avais six ans,... (When I was 6 years old…)
L’homme était grand. (The man was tall.)J’ étais en classe. (I was in class.)Le vieux chien était en bonne santé. (The old

You use the imperfect...
When there is the notion of an action in progress in the past:
Je faisais du ski quand je suis tombée.
(I was skiing when I fell.)
Nous regardions la télé quand le téléphone a sonné.
(We were watching TV when the phone rang.)

• In fact, it’s difficult to make a mistake if you use these verbs in the imperfect!
• BUT:
Je le savais.-I knew it.(state of mind)
Je l’ai su. I learned it, heard of it. (event)

Vous regardiez la télé quand je suisentrée.

The Formation of the Imperfect
• To find the imperfect stem, start with the nous-form of the present tense. Then remove -ons:
