Songs of the sixties, reality in this era
• The times they are a changing– Educate perspectives– Celebrate live
• Blowin’ in the wind– Society gets mobilised, mobilises itself
• Here comes the sun– Energy is not the problem, materials are..
Wealth: it shows at night
Revolution?
• What do we really need to know / learn?
• Don’t tell the messages, just focus on capacities
• What are the essential capacities?– Global citizenship– Triple top line-thinking (do not look for the bottomline)– Capacity to create– Valuedriven self esteem
Cradle to cradle:
“Why less bad is no good: waste equals food”
Cradle to Cradle
Peter Keler, 1922 (Bauhaus)
Cradle to Cradle is ambitious:
• It is about value-creation, about clever solutions, new designs, working on effectiveness
• It is about design and re-design
• Creativity of the creatives: help industry to get ‘room to move’

Cradle to Cradle is working towards effectiveness
ECO-EFFECTIVENESS
DEFINE,INCREASE,SUPPORT, OPTIMIZE
ECO-EFFICIENCY
Cradle to Cradle is working on metabolisms
Identify the best: ABC-X categorization
OPTIMAL
OPTIMIZING
TOLERABLE
NOT ACCEPTABLE
NOT CHARACTERIZED
Start working…
• Don’t improve, start to re-design
• Less bad is not doing good (add value)
• Not less material, but manage the materials
• Cradle to Cradle instead of Cradle to grave
• Don’t simplify (one size fits all), celebrate diversity
Celebrate
Celebrate intelligence,
Celebrate beauty,
Celebrate life!
Paradigmshift for EE (1)
• 1. Understanding Living SystemsHow do living systems work? What recurring patterns or archetypes do we see in systems, both natural and social? (focus: principles of living systems)
• 2. Making Systems VisibleLearn to see more then just the parts, see the whole system. What tools and methods help us to make systems visible? How can we analyse our situation and find the right keys to change (leverages)
• 3. Talking about Systemshow can we share our mental models? How can we thinking about interventions in systems? What is the real quality of the system, now and what is its added value in the future?
Paradigmshift for EE (2)
• 4. Create a perspectiveWhat values do we treasure: biodiversity, social & cultural diversity, economical effectiveness? What quality should be enhanced for your product, initiative or system? Be creative, be beneficial!
• 5. Start (re-)designFind the design principles for your product (on all levels: spatial planning, product design, industrial design, building etc). And let it help design your life.
• 6. Nature is a perfect source for learningWe need to learn from nature (again). Biomimicry shows how nature developed solutions for complex situations. Learning from nature might be the bias for modern craftsmanship.

• Any doubts?
• Any questions?
• Any thoughts?
• Do you see the shift?
So, work on design principles
• Learning from nature
• What values do we support?
• What quality do we enhance?
• How can we be creative?
Step 1: Take a look outside
• Any organism that survives in this situation?
• What characteristics can you identify?
• Does any organism do harm to the situation?
• Can you find something you like?
Conclusions: paperclipmethod: write down your own conclusions, then share them

Step 2: What values do you support?
• On the social environment?
• On the physical environment?
• On the systems orientation?
Discuss in small group and identify 2 or 3 values on each theme
Step 3: what quality needs to (or can) be enhanced
• P P P
• Solidarity (scale: local – global)
• Solidarity (intergenerational)
When a car can clean the air, what would other products do?
Home or here on the conference venue?
Step 4: Have the Courage to Create (C2C)
Design for (dis-)assembly
Step 4: Have the Courage to Create (C2C)
• Find a new solution for a classical umbrella or a bicycle
• Ask questions
• What conditions do you need to get the Courage to Create?
