After Pascha, the whirlwind of its celebration and
the frenzy of its many demands, I came back into the
office and began trying to sift through a stack of papers
that had accumulated on my desk. Attempting to get
caught up by getting to the bottom of these miscellaneous
notes, letters, and memos, I came across a drawing that
one of our Sunday School children had given to me—a
happy discovery—and this I gladly taped onto the wooden
paneling of the office that has become an impromptu
gallery for such offerings. This particular drawing, done
all in blue, shows the outside of a Church, ours perhaps:
blue windowed, blued doored, and with a blue Cross
resting at the crest of a slanted blue dome. What it may
lack in realism it more than makes up for in cheeriness.
Most striking in this depiction, though, are two blue hearts
hovering in the air aflank the cupola’s Cross. The Church
is sandwiched between these two universal declarations
and depictions of love and welcome, an iconographic truth
if ever there was one.
It was a happy find and a reminder I needed, that
crayoned image conveying something hard for me to feel
that day, worn out as I was and full of that peevishness
I’m embarrassed to admit fatigue and frustration too
frequently take as their entirely unhelpful outlet. Some
things are often unspoken, especially at Church. And one
of these is that we don’t all always want to be here—a
truth we
don’t like to
admit to
ourselves, especially pastors. We don’t all always find
Church a joyful place, a peaceful one, or one of respite.
Sometimes, more often than we’d probably care to
concede, the idea of welcome, the idea of this place as one
of love, hovers just out of reach, lingering in the air as an
ideal. And then what happens? We come as obligation; we
come as routine; expectations fill us at times more than
faith. Or we stop coming. The one thing we don’t do is
talk about why this is, when Church becomes no longer a
best loved place.
The Paschal season is halfway through as I
write this. I’ve gotten a lot more sleep, and the routine of
Church always full of the unexpected yet full also of that
beautiful and regular unfolding of week by week services
and feasts has returned. You’ll doubtless find me peevish
here and there still for which I can only apologize. And
the picture of a blue parish hangs above the office couch.
But what to do when we don’t want to be here, this seems
like a thought worth keeping, a souvenir of this Pascha
past that’s worth examination. And so we will, next month
and maybe more.
Christ is Risen! Krishti u ngjall!

SHËNJTORJA MARIA / PRAYER TO SAINT MARY Poem by Ermira Mitre (Korrik/July 2016)
SHËNJTORJA MARIA I falemi Shën Marisë,
i falemi parajsës, pallatit të florinjtë,
i falemi vetë mëshirës e dlirësisë,
virgjëreshës, to pafajshmes deri në vetmohim,
PRAYER TO SAINT MARY We venerate you dear St. Mary,
we pray to you, o paradise, o palace of flowers,
o Virgin Mary, innocent and selfless,
we pray for purity, mercy and forgiveness.
We pray to the Mother of Divine Hope,
to the everlasting, shining Rose,
to the Beauty and the Blessed,
to save us from human disobedience.
O our Queen, the Moon that shines at night,
please visit our poor souls more often,
and bring into them divine light.
In our daily struggles with purity,
victory is rare, so we pray to you, o Queen,
to bless us with eternal, inner peace.
We pray to you in true devotion,
bow, kneel down, and plead to you,
please, listen to our heartfelt prayer,
with the mercy of Almighty God,
comfort our sorrows, torments and pains,
the burning wounds of perdition’s flames.
