From the Desk of Our Pastor
Christian Stewardship “Christ is Risen, We Are Risen.” So the first generations of Christians greeted one another during the Easter season. Easter is the greatest feast of the Church’s liturgical year because we celebrate Christ’s victory over sin and death, not just as a one time event, but one that continues for each generation in the Church because we access Christ’s victory and death through Baptism. During this Easter season we pray in the ancient words of the Victimae Paschali that “Our hearts be free from evil that we may see aright the Savior resurrected in His eternal light.”

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY April 8, 2018
Pope John Paul II officially designated the first Sunday after Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday. Jesus revealed to Sister Faustina that on that day a person’s sins would be forgiven and the temporal punish-ment associated with them if certain conditions are fulfilled: 1) Place complete trust in God’s Mercy 2) Go to Confession-preferably before that Sunday 3) Receive Communion on Divine Mercy Sunday 4) Respect the image of the Most Merciful Savior. (A picture will be displayed on the side altar on the day). 5) Be merciful to others by your actions, words and prayers. DIVINE MERCY NOVENA: The Divine Mercy Novena allows one to more fully experience the mercy that Jesus extends to all. The novena begins on Good Friday and can be said privately. There is one short prayer for each of the nine days and the Divine Mercy chaplet should be said at the same time. Pamphlets with the novena and the chaplet will be at each entrance of the Church.

April 1, 2018 Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Happy Easter! A few weeks ago, I shared news about the 8th grade Confir-mation service project which raised money to benefit Hogan Inmaculado Corazon de Maria, a Catholic orphanage in El Salvador. The students organized and carried out a Money Wars campaign and ended up raising nearly $2400 for the orphanage. The substantial donation is earmarked for the installation of a water filtration system for the residents of the orphanage and the surrounding community. Mr. Frank LaRusso, our parent liaison for the project, visited this week so that we could formally present him with the check on behalf of the 8th grade students and our school community. Mr. LaRusso connected us to the orphan-age via Skype and we were greeted by the children singing Himno de la Alegria, which means Song of Joy. According to Senora Jaraba, our Spanish teacher and translator for the session, Himno de la Alegria is a very special song in Hispanic cultures. It is sung on special occasions to signify the importance of an event and the depth of joy and gratitude felt by the participants.
Grace Stetler then spoke to the students in Spanish, letting them know about our gift and promising to keep them in our prayers. Mr. LaRusso described (with the help of a translator) how he came to be affiliated with the orphanage and how he and his company will visit in the future to oversee the water project. It was incredibly inspiring to witness the connection between these young people! On behalf of the faculty and staff at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, may you celebrate this Easter with hearts filled with love and peace. Have a blessed and wonderful Easter. Dawn Parker

Candidates and CatechumensCandidates and Catechumens
Candidate: Andrew Mastrome Sponsor: Anthony Mastrome Andrew was born in Philadelphia and is sponsored by his grandfather, Anthony Mastrome. He was baptized at St. Katherine of Siena Church in the Torresdale section of Philadelphia. Andrew is an 8th grade student at Tohickon Middle School. He enjoys reading, video games, and watching football - especially Eagles games. Andrew wanted to be confirmed and wanted his grandfather to be his sponsor. During the RCIA classes, he asks penetrating questions which are very much appreciated by the catechists.
Candidate: William Deem Sponsor: Rob McDaniel Will was born in Cocoa Beach, Florida, and is sponsored by his brother, Rob McDaniel. Will is a 10th grade student at Central Bucks H.S. He was baptized at St. Mary Church in Rockledge, Florida. Will enjoys skateboarding, track, and woodworking and is an avid fan of the Eagles and the Florida State Seminoles football team. His brother encouraged him to join RCIA, and his faithfully attends. He claims to have learned more about God and the Bible than he even knew before. He has also joined our Teen Ministry group where he has made many friends. Will has lived in six different states, and we are delighted that he has joined our RCIA journey this year.
I The Period of Inquiry For a variety of reasons, those who have questions about the Catholic faith begin coming to sessions at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in September. Many inquirers have very basic questions. What is the meaning of holy water? Why do you genuflect before entering a pew? Why is so much emphasis placed on Mary? Gradually, inquirers gain some basic knowledge about our faith and begin to experience a conversion of heart. Based on a personal decision, the inquirer will then move forward into the period of the Catechumenate. II Period of Catechumenate At this time, each person is paired with a sponsor who will be willing to walk with the inquirer on his or her faith journey. This pairing is usually the birth of a beautiful and lasting friendship. The period of the Catechumenate begins with what is called the Rite of Acceptance. Members of the RCIA community give witness at the Mass, celebrating this event, and sponsors welcome the catechu-mens and candidates by signing their five senses. At this time, the members of the RCIA community are dismissed during the Sunday liturgy to go forth and “break open the Scriptures” after the homily. III Period of Purification and Enlightenment On the first Sunday of Lent, the catechumens and candidates stand before the Our Lady of Mount Carmel community, where the catechumens sign the Book of the Elect. They then meet with other catechumens and candidates to be greeted by the Archbishop of Philadelphia in a formal reception at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. The period of Lent represents a time of deep personal
preparation. The members of the RCIA community will experience one of the three Scruntinies on the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent, and will be presented with copies of the Nicene Creed and the Our Father – symbols of the basic beliefs of their new faith community. IV Full Sacramental Reception The Mass of the Easter Vigil is the opportunity for all members of the RCIA community to be received fully into the Sacramental life of the church. Those who are to be baptized are immersed in water as the way to die to one’s old self and rise to new life in Jesus. Those who are to be confirmed are anointed with oil to celebrate the presence of the Holy Spirit, and the celebration is culminated by the Eucharistic celebration. V Mystagogia During the fifty days of Easter, the catechumens and candidates are living as fully initiated Catholics who are celebrating their new life and spiritual growth in the faith. This is an opportunity for them to experience the roles played by various members of the church community and to make a commitment to their personal involvement in that community.

RCIA THE JOURNEY TOWARD FULL SACRAMENTALRECEPTION IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
The rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) consists of five distinct phases:
Catechumen: Rick Mabes Godparent: Jennifer Mancinelli Rick was born in Ewing, New Jersey, where he currently resides. His godparent is his good friend, Jennifer Mancinelli. Rick has a degree from Mercer County Community College in Electronic Technology. He is employed by Ewing Township as a heavy truck driver for road repair. He has three children: Brittany (21), Melyssa (17), and Cody (19) Rick enjoys fishing, sports, dogs, and spending time with his family and friends. Jennifer convinced him to join RCIA, and he is eager to share the Catholic faith with his family. Jennifer describes Rick as "hard working, kind, honest, and someone who would do anything for his family and friends." He is extremely popular with his RCIA family, and he faithfully travels to the RCIA meetings every week from Ewing.
Catechumen: Lawrence David Carlen Godparent: Monica Malatesta Dave is a native of Doylestown and is sponsored by his friend Monica Malatesta. After graduating from Central Bucks H.S. Dave spent 25 years in the US Navy. He has two children: his son Cameron (17) and his daughter Jordan (14). Dave is an extremely popular police officer with the Central Bucks Regional Police Department. He has touched the lives of many young people through his involvement with the DARE program and other initiatives. He is devoted to making a difference in the lives of others in his community. Dave's devout faith came about through his serious illness with cancer. During that time, he made visits to the Padre Pio Shrine. All of the RCIA Team members are honored and delighted to have Dave with us on the RCIA journey.
