Osmosis - Diffusion of water molecules through a selectively
permeable membrane. -Cells need water to perform functions properly.
-Water helps “plump up” cells. -Without water, cells would shrink and die. !
Diffusion - Small molecules move through cell membrane. - Cell membrane is selectively permeable (allowing certain particles in
while keeping others out). - Molecules move from a higher concentration to a lower concentration.
Active Transport
- Molecules pass through membrane USING cell’s energy. - Cells use transport proteins to move molecules. OR - Cell membrane engulfs or “swallows up” the molecule.
Passive Transport
- Molecules pass through membrane WITHOUT using cell’s energy. - Diffusion & osmosis use passive transport. - Passive = “lazy” transport.
