program of music, honoring those who have served in conflict overseas through a series of letters written by Soldiers

The 234 Army Band, nicknamed “Oregon’s Own”, is the Oregon National Guard’s ambassadors to the State of Oregon.
Organized in 1919, the band has seen duty in the Pacific during WWII and was awarded several citations including the

234th Army Band History – Long Version
Supporting the Oregon National Guard
“Oregon’s Own” 234th Army Band is a 40 member unit of the Oregon National Guard based out of Camp
Withycombe in Clackamas, Oregon. The Band performs as a full concert band as well as numerous smaller ensembles
including a rock band, brass and woodwind quintets, a marching band, and jazz ensembles. This flexible arrangement
allows the band to perform over 80 times annually, amongst the most of any reserve component band nationally,
supporting civil and military functions, memorials, parades and public concerts throughout the state of Oregon and
beyond.
The Band was organized and federally recognized as the Band section, Service Company, 162nd Infantry Regiment on June 20th 1919, and was inducted to federal service on September 16th 1940, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. The band received participation credit for the Luzon, New Guinea, and the Southern Philippine
campaigns, receiving the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation for service from October 17th 1944 to July 4th 1945. The band was inactivated on June 30th 1946 on Okinawa and redesignated as the 234th Army Band on May 17th, 1947. Members of the 234th Army Band hail from all over Oregon and Washington and meet several times monthly
to rehearse music and participate in military training. In their civilian lives, band members serve as professional
musicians, educators, contractors, engineers, firefighters, business owners, and students. Many members of the band
began their military careers in the active duty, in both musical and nonmusical units, and several have served in Iraq.
While primarily a musical organization, the 234th Army Band has been called upon to serve in the capacity of
disaster response and humanitarian relief. Most recently, members of the Band were deployed to New Orleans to
assist with relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina. As is true with the rest of the Army National Guard, the 234th Army
Band is Always Ready, Always There.
The Band is led by Chief Warrant Officer Ashley Alexander and First Sergeant Preston Baxter. For further
information or to request the 234th Army Band for a performance contact SFC Matt Cook
