What do we mean by adult education?
(pssst: we prefer to talk about adult learning)
Non vocational
Basic skills - literacy / numeracy / ICT
Vocational
· Learning to prepare for a new stage of life.
· Learning to create your own biography.
Why does it matter?
· Wider benefits of learning.
The village college ...... would provide for the whole man, and abolish the duality of
education and ordinary life.
Villages colleges
The dismal dispute of vocational and non-vocational education would not arise in it. (Henry Morris)

Learning in a Digital World
Teachers now must embrace digital resources
Interest in free resources
What are teachers saying about OEP?
We need to be able to add our context to any material we
adopt.
Web 2 tools – are they Open Ed Resources?
Openeness for us is more about sharing ideas about teaching
approaches than sharing materials.
Popular resources
Us learners are making content now you know!
There are different kinds of free!!
NIACE – ALT Seminar
‘Free and open educational resources treasure chest or irrelevance to adult learners’
Spring 2011
· encourage providers to make a policy of sharing materials that they produce through assignment of a creative commons licence or similar process.
· encourage public funding projects to assign creative commons or government commons licences to materials produced.
· seek to include Open Educational Practices as part of Initial Teacher training and to be available for in service training.
encourage providers to make OERs available on platforms where independent learners can easily access them
and offer clear guidance on how to study alone and where to go for additional support.
The risks associated with Open Educational Resources
· These resources are subject to very variable quality checks
· OERs could undermine the market in good quality commercial content creation leaving a residual set of mediocre free resources.
‘There is already a vast store of free online resources …………………
The priority is not more resources but well- trained staff.’
NIACE response
….OER
The great Pretend…oer
· Public funding for so called OER projects where the plans are purely for content creation that would have happened anyway.
· No account taken of needs of other users
Publicly funded OERs
· Format· Level· Descriptions
· The three messages `are coming up soon

Key messages
· Develop teacher skills: sourcing , adapting and deploying materials
· Learners skills in self study.
· Public funding for OERs should take account of all potential users.
