Proposal and Rationale Sophists University is a mid-sized dual
mode institution. Business Writing, an undergraduate course, will
be offered as a blended course. Business Writing (Titled English
390) will cover different types of business communications.
Students will benefit from face-to-face and virtual learning
environments so that they will be marketable and relevant in todays
global workforce.

believes that the goal for education is to prepare students with
the skills that promote economic health of our society and the
political health of a democracy (Rheingold, 2010).

Course Description for ENGL 390 All students are required to
know how to use the Internet, Email, and basis word processing.
Students will gain knowledge about written communication, such as
business letters, memos, short reports and proposals. This is a 15
weeks, 3 semesters hours course. This course will be offered in the
Fall, Spring and Summer Semesters.

Course Management and University Cost ENGL 390 will be taught 3
times in the 1 st year. By year 8, to run this course it will
require one manager and a full time secretarial staff. The internal
charges will cover maintenance of buildings and grounds, HR
services, capital investment in buildings and ICT services. A
minimum return to the University of $5000 per course is
required.

Course Materials and Development The textbook for this course
is Business and Administrative Communication by Locker and
Keinsler. Other materials will be taken from the Internet, which
includes e-books, databases and journals from Sophists Universitys
Library. Social Medias such as Twitter and blogs will be used. The
course instructor, instructional designer and web designer will
work as a team in developing this new course.

Student Support The instructor will provide instructions in a
face-to-face and virtual setting for this course. There will be
three in class assessments during the semester. Tutors will support
and monitor online activities for 5 hours a week for 30 students.
The tutor will provide face-to-face assistance with final group
project.

Assessment Through face-to-face and virtual instructions,
students will be assessed with quizzes, exams and one collaborative
projects. The instructor will create the quizzes and Sophists
University is responsible for the design and layout of them. An
administrative staff member will moderate the two-hour face-to-face
exam.

Envisaged Enrollment ENGL 390 should have 90 students in the
first year as an elective course. In later years, a core course in
a number of other programs, which will yield a higher enrollment
for this course. Year two 150 students, year three 210 students and
270 in the years to follow.

Course Updating, Review and Fee The course will be reviewed in
the third year, and the updated course offered in the fourth year.
The external reviewer will be paid $1000. Setup of course in the
LMS will be $500. Domestic students will pay $500 per unit and
international students $700 per unit.

determine the media for ENGL 390. According to Bates (2005)
accessibility and flexibility of technology is the most important
element when considering which technologies to integrate in a
virtual course.

Teaching and Learning Sophists University decided to make ENGL
390 a blended course due to careers in business depends heavily on
technical and social skills. ENGL 390 will consist of three types
of learning, face-to-face with instructor, virtually with the LMS
and with external electronically resources.
