As this year begins, we step out in faith walking in the footsteps of Jesus and placing ourselves under the guidance and protection of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. Entrusting ourselves and the year ahead to God, the staff had several opportunities to come together for prayer, reflection and for the sharing of Eucharist before the girls’ return to school. We welcomed Fr. Cyril Blake as our celebrant for our Opening Staff Mass and, on Tuesday, the College community gathered to celebrate our Opening School mass with Fr. Paul Gurry as our celebrant. During the mass, our new Year 7 students were anointed by their Year 12 ‘big sisters’, as were all other new students and staff. To anoint another is to welcome, bless and commission them and so, this was a most special part of our mass. Ash Wednesday falls next Wednesday, 13 February and on that day we will receive the ashes together. During this Lent, our monies raised will be split between the works of our OLSH Sisters in Africa and the Caritas’ Project Compassion appeal. I know already that our girls will shine in their fundraising efforts for those in greatest need.
As I close, I invite us all to stand in solidarity and remember in prayer our brothers and sisters who are battling the effects of the floods and our indigenous brothers and sisters with whom we will commemorate the National Apology next Wednesday. I look forward to working with your daughters as we work towards making Jesus’ love known to the ends of the earth. I speak on behalf of the Sisters when I say please be assured of our on-going prayers for you and yours throughout this year.
Young Vinnies The Young Vinnies Group, supported by staff and students here at the College, will be launched in Homeroom in the next two weeks. The group is affiliated with the St. Vincent De Paul Society and provides support for those in need. Girls are able to help in a number of ways, including:
• preparing and serving food at the Sacred Heart Mission. • by baking cakes to be distributed from the Footscray Soup Van, and • by assisting on the Footscray Soup Van.
Messages from St Vincent de Paul…
Thank you on behalf of our conference members for the invitation to attend the end of year Mass with the students at St. Paul’s and the morning tea that followed. It was a very spiritual Mass with the singing and presentation by the girls beautifully executed. Some of our members have deep connections with Our Lady of the Sacred Heard College through their children and present day grandchildren attending the College.
And
On behalf of the members of Moorabbin/Bentleigh St. Vincent de Paul, I would like to thank you for the amazing selection of Christmas Hamper gifts and food…thank you also for the time, effort and organising this ‘special appeal’ to help those not as fortunate as us. In all we delivered 36 hampers in the Bentleigh/Moorabbin area, mainly to those we visit regularly. Thank you for your continued support.
Blessings on you and yours, Sr. Megan Donohue fdnsc

I hope all College families enjoyed the festive season and that the holiday period was a time to recharge the batteries and reconnect with loved ones. Some of our areas of focus in the classroom this year include:
• The OLSH Learning and Teaching Charter to inform all aspects of classroom relationships and practice.
• Further development Australian Curriculum at Years 7 to 10. • Pedagogy to reflect a 1:1 laptop environment. • A focus feedback and sharing best teaching practice through observation and reflection.
The pursuit of excellence is a key element of the College’s vision. We enjoy a reputation for excellent academic results, with our girls consistently achieving outstanding results. Our VCE results in 2012 were no exception:
More than 45 students, many in Year 11, achieved study scores for individual subjects of 40 or above.
This is a spectacular result. We are all very proud of these girls and all of our 2012 Year 12 students. They now start the next exciting chapter of their educational or life journey and our thoughts and prayers go with them. The school community will have great pleasure in recognising their achievement at our annual VCE Excellence Awards on Wednesday, 20 February.

Keeping OLSH Girls Safe on Our Roads
Parents dropping off and picking up their daughters outside the College on Jasper Road and Robert Street are asked to be mindful of how and where they park, including leaving the driveways of our surrounding
residents clear.
In the interests of the safety of all our girls, please do not stop in front of the crossing flag on Jasper Rd or across the main exit driveways in Robert Street.
It is also important that all road rules and parking restrictions in the area are observed, including not
making u-turns during school hours in Jasper Rd and Robert St.
Please take care driving around OLSH!
Your assistance and cooperation is much appreciated.

Education Maintenance Allowance The Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is provided by the Victorian Government to assist lower-income families with education related costs for their children up until the age of 16. From 2013, the Victorian Government is restructuring the EMA to better target financial support to families on lower incomes. The EMA will no longer be paid 50/50 between the parent and the school, and the school portion will no longer be paid to schools on behalf of parents. The updated EMA application form now contains an option where you can elect to have your EMA paid to the school to be used as a credit toward school fees. The EMA now provides an annual amount of $300.00 for secondary students in Year 7 only, and $250.00 for secondary students in Year 8 until 16 years of age, and will continue to be paid in two instalments. Parents with continuing eligibility, who are paid the first instalment of 2013 will not be required to submit a new application for the second instalment. Further details and eligibility are included in the PDF EMA NEWSLETTER INFORMATION attached to the email received with this newsletter. The EMA application must be received at the College by 28 February 2013. Copies of the EMA application form are available from the College Office.

We look forward to offering a variety of Performing Arts events this year, including a ‘new look’ replacement for the Rock Eisteddfod. Watch this space for more information! Vocal and Instrumental Music Lessons Our Instrumental Music program gives students the opportunity to become proficient in playing an instrument of their choice, thus developing and exploring their talents, while also experiencing personal fulfilment. As part of their musical experience, students are also given the opportunity to participate in an ensemble, band or choir, promoting a sense of belonging to a community of musicians and providing the exhilarating experience of performing. The instrumental staff at OLSH currently offer lessons, either individual or group, in voice, guitar, strings, drums/percussion, piano (individual only), flute and clarinet. Further details about tuition and an application form to learn an instrument in 2013 are available from the College Office. We look forward to welcoming new students into our vibrant Instrumental Program in 2013.
