The event I went to was Dorris Place Elementary School to help volunteer because us and
Marshall were invited to this event to go out and help them. When I arrived at the school, I went
to speak to the volunteer service table and they told me to go to the basketball booth where I
felt very comfortable be-cause I play basketball as a sport as well. I felt like I did a great job
where kids gave me a ticket which cost about a dollar each and they have three options of
making it into the first, second, or third basket ranging from 1-3 prize tickets which could be
redeemed for souvenirs. I met new people as well which made it great where I got to socialize
a bit with some of the people from Marshall which made my day even better as they
accompanied me throughout my 4 hour shift which didn't feel that long come to think about it
because I was well entertained with kids trying to shoot their way to earn tickets for them to get
prizes. At the end of the day, this event made me feel good and it was a time well spent as I
got to host my favorite sport as a booth and I got to meet new people with my 4 hour shift
ending very fast.

This month, I attended the Dorris Place Elementary School’s Fall Festival to help fundraise money
for their music program. Not only did I help save the music program, I was also able to create
new bonds with the people I met and strengthened the ties with my friends. I met really fun
people and it was great to get to know them. It was truly an inspiring event as it aimed to raise
$13,000 in 6 hours! I mostly helped out with the food booth, which started off really hectic – too
many people ordering and too little workers! However, with the other volunteers’ assistance, I
was able to get the hang of it. It was really nice to serve the little children who came to support
their school. In the other booths, our fellow key clubbers were helping out with the game
booths, entertaining the guests and children. It was amazing to see such a large amount of
people attend the event, and it showed me how much they truly cared for the music. Hopefully
more people will attend next year and create some awesome memories!

EMILY RAMOS (Herbert Hoover) Duck Splash is a beloved community event in
Glendale and is always an exciting one to
volunteer at. Hoover's Key Club was one of
many from District 3 South who attended,
and it felt special that so many of our partner
schools could get a peek at one of our
town's lovely traditions.
Hoover's Key Club manned a game booth
with the help of several K Kids, and our game
cost only three tickets to play. Participants
would draw a lollipop from a Styrofoam cube
which had many stuck into it; if the tip had a
green mark on it, then they could keep the
lollipop and a prize, but if it was clean, they
could still keep the lollipop anyway.
It was fun to see so many enthusiastic
children excited to get a lollipop and if they
were lucky, a prize as well. The cardboard
Minecraft heads were particularly popular.
Like any other event, it was also enjoyable
purely because it was an opportunity to
bond with fellow Key Clubbers from Hoover
as well as other schools.
From this event, I learned how to put myself
out there and speak to people with
confidence. When manning a booth, it is
difficult at times to attract a sufficient amount
of players. But that was not much of a
problem for us because we all told every
passerby about how fun our game was. We
were a hit and ran out if lollipops by the end
of the day!
This was my second time in a row
volunteering at Duck Splash, and I look
forward to attending again next year.
RUBEN ANGUIANO (Benjamin Franklin) Duck Splash!! It was my first time attending this
event and now i know people love it so much!!
Basically a club runs a specific game booth for
the Duck Splash Festival in Verdugo Park. Our
Club was in charge of the basketball game
booth. We started around 10 and at first the
booths were hardly noticed! So we decided to
cheer and congratulate everyone who won! As
a result, people wondered what was all the noise
and more and more people began to
participate in our booth! All our members who
attended the event were cheering and having a
great time! It was a wonderful experience
because we helped and interacted with the
community first hand! A lot of people were
playing our basketball game booth so we started
to run out of prizes! Until around 2 pm all our
prizes were gone but we didn’t end there! We
allowed the kids to play for free because it was
really fun experience! Cheers and screams filled
the day especially when we ran out of prizes and
started a dunk contest! However, shortly after its
time to clean up and we basically take down the
booth and clean up around our stations. Our
club also helped out on taking down the huge
rubber Ducks which made our day even better!
We help pack and clean up and that ends Duck
Splash! And shortly after we have a cheer session
for Fall Rally with some of the clubs from the
Division! Overall it was a wonderful experience
and I have to go again next year!
CHARISSE TALARO (Holy Family)
October was a month of strong advertisement for the long awaited Duck
Splash. Duck Splash was a great experience for our new members of Holy
Family Key Club. Selling ducks weeks before the event was a challenge for
everyone, yet we were still able to collect a sufficient amount of adoptions
of ducks and spread the word about the event. Families and friends were
more informed and were willing to come out and support the event,
whether through adopting a duck or attending the event. From helping set
up our very own game booth, to connecting with the Glendale community,
all members were open and enjoying the moment of service to others.
Meeting other key clubbers and sharing the day with children friendly game
booths made a day of service lead into a rewarding day at the end as well.
As October comes to an end, the anticipation for Fall Rally has begun.
Collecting money and reviewing cheers will be the next challenge for the
upcoming month of November. Holy Family Key Club cannot wait for more
events to come!
JEFFREY FERNANDEZ (Benjamin Franklin) Duck Splash was a really fun event that I am really glad I attended! The purpose of the event is to
have a fundraiser that supports the Glendale Kiwanis that always host Duck Splash every year
since I've been a freshman in high school and a freshman member in our key club. To add to the
positivity of the great event was that every ticket earned at our game booth was 25 cents each
which meant that whatever we earned at our game booth, we gave half to the hosts of the
event and the rest went to our club! At the event I was met with our club's members and got the
great choice of picking any game booth we wanted to since our club got their early. We
excitedly choose the basketball game booth that would have children shoot with a small
basketball into an elevated basketball hoop in hopes of making it and winning a prize form our
game booth. The rules of our game booth were that it costs one ticket to play our game and that
every person had three chances to make the ball into the basketball hoop. It was especially
great to see the smiles and excitement of children shooting the ball and making it in the
basketball hoop which was what I greatly enjoyed while I volunteered at the event because as
kids became happy, it made our club's members and myself really happy as well. I have
attended Duck Splash three times in a row and I have enjoyed each Duck Splash more and more
each time I attend this awesome event.
COLENE ENCARNADO (John Marshall) On October 11, I was finally able to attend my first, and possibly last, Duck
Splash. Everyone there was so friendly – from all the other high schoolers
volunteering for Key Club to the parents taking their adorable children
around. I arrived for the afternoon shift where our school was assigned to
the Shark Bite Booth. The game was simple: you get three plushies for three
tries at the price of one ticket and as long as you make it inside the
inflatable shark’s mouth, you were able to choose a prize from the basket. I
loved seeing the kids walk by the booth and being drawn to the inflatable
shark. We would cheer every time they make it inside or encourage them if
they missed. It was so entertaining watching them debate over which prizes
to get because there was so many to choose from. Some would cutely ask
for recommendations! There were also a lot of opportunities to meet other
Key Clubbers working nearby booths and we even got some really good
food (burgers, fries, and a drink) for free. All in all, this event is a perfect
example of what Key Club is all about and I’m so glad I came.

AIDS is a serious disease. It is estimated that about 35.3
million people are currently living with this disease.
On October 12, 2014, about 25,000 people walked
approximately 6 miles, raising $2.3 million to help find a
cure for AIDS. The walk began at 10 a.m., beginning
and ending at West Hollywood Park in Los Angeles. This
event was produced by AIDS Project Los Angeles
(APLA).
I am proud to be among those 25,000 people.
During the opening ceremony, I heard many celebrities
and important people in our community give speeches
about the disease and its history. Some singing groups
also sang songs that gave the hope and will to fight the
disease.
I saw many people holding hands, mostly gays/lesbians,
and it was a beautiful scene.
Once the walk began, we were all very excited to
participate in this cause.
There was a huge group of people handing out water
bottles and bars to people.
I must admit that the walk was quite tiring, especially
with the sun scorching down on us. However, I knew it
was for a good cause and that thought kept me going
the whole time.
Crossing the finish line brought me joy, not only because
I could finally sit down, but because I knew I had been
part of a movement to help people around the world.
I learned that if people join together, get on their feet,
and try to make a change, then there is no reason to
believe that anything is impossible.

On October 12, I participated in Aids
Walk. We were able to meet up
friends that we knew from other
schools. Everyone was so enthusiastic,
which made it a lot of fun. We walked
6 miles. It was funny to see how empty
Melrose Ave was. It was cool seeing
the names of different groups that
participated in the walk. Even though
it was a tiring activity, it was easy to
forget how exhausted I was because
of talking with all my old friends---and
new friends. The best part was making
it to the finish line. It felt good to help
those in need of such a horrible
disease.

“It was a truly unforgettable day, looking forward for
next year!” – Bryce Tan ERHS Key Club
“Fall Rally 2014 was probably one of the most fun years I've went to in
my high school years. Being surrounded by passionate key clubbers
who would yell at the top of their lungs for service was truly inspiring
for me. There's always laughter, endless joy, and enthusiasm for
service to surround yourself in at Key Club and Fall Rally was the
perfect place to find all of that.”
– Cherryn Parque Herbert Hoover Key Club
“On November 15, 2014, I along with the other members of my division
attend Fall Rally. Fall Rally is the biggest Pediatric Trauma Program
fundraiser. Members from the Cali-Nev-Ha district raised money by
auctioning of LTGs.
I enjoyed this event because I met more people from different divisions
and even different districts who were there for the same reason as I
was. I learned that saving lives is just as easy as cheering alongside my
division.”
