Tirty-sevenalumniandthreeundergraduatesgatheredatheOlympicClubinSanFranciscoDecember8oroneothemost
leasantNuChapterChristmasaairsinrecenthistory.Asitheresenceooldstandbyswasntenough,wehappilywelcomedsomedditionalyoungeralumniwhohadnotpreviouslygracedthosehalls.Asusual,alumniwivesenjoyedtheirbuetattheMarinesMemorial,ndjoinedtherestouslateron.And,asalways,theoodwassuperb.Photosotheestivities,thankstoom,Morgan,areincludedinthisssue.
Frater Dan Costello, longtime master o ceremonies andoordinatorotheluncheon,tooktheopportunitytoannouncehisetirementrombothpositions,andexpressedthehopethatsomeoneewand,perhaps,youngerwould takeover.In themeantime,thisashappened. FraterPeterClovenwillassumeboth jobs, andthe
AlumniBoardhasalreadyseweduparrangementsornextDecember.Reservationsortheroomaremadeandthedepositispaid.
Wellbe at Hs.Lordships on the BerkeleyMarina, site oeveraloourFoundersDayBanquetsoaewyearsago.Tislocationsmoreaccessibletomostmembers,wellhaveasumptuousbuetor40,withredandwhitewineonthetables(thats$24lessthanlastear)andparkingisree.Teladieswillhavetheirluncheonthere,aswell.TeeventisFriday,December11.Youllbehearingalotmoreboutthisaswedrawnearertothedate.

AsIstartedmytermasPrytanis,Iwasunsureowhtoexpectandhowdicultmyjobwouldbe.HalwaythroumyrstsemesterIcouldnotbemorepleasedwithwherethouseisrightnow.IhaveseenmyratersgrowandbecomstrongerindividualsandIhaveseenthehousebecomeamustrongerplacetoexerciseourraternalbond.WhenmoveindcameinmidJanuary,everyonewasexcitedtobebackatschoandmoreimportantlybackintheKEhouse.Ihaveneversethespiritothehousesohigh.Itwasthatattitudethatledwhatmaybethelargestinitiatedclasssincere-chartering.OrushchairsDanFiedlerandAdamFurmandidanamazingjondingoutstandingmentojoinourbond.Wecurrentlyhav
21pledgesandarelookingorwardtohavingeverysingleonothembeinitiated. With21newmindsenteringtheraternity,Iseethouse changing.Wehave theopportunity tobe thegreateraternityoncampus.Idontmeanthatwewillbethrowinthecraziestparties.Rather,Imeanthatourhousehasgaina reputation that ekes have outstanding character and agentlemenatalltimes.Equallyimportant,wecanhavegrePhilanthropyeventssuchasourBattleoBandsthatraisedove$1400dollarsortheAlzheimersAssociation.KEhasbecoma great place tohelpmen todevelopmentally,morally, ansocially.
MyearsomyjobhavesubsidedaterseeinghowwourhouseisdoingrightnowandIwouldlovetoseethealuminvolvedwhenevertheycan.Ithereisanywayinwhichwcouldreachouttoyou,pleasedonthesitatetocontactmetheHistor,DustinMcKenzie,asweallappreciatetheworkantimeyouspentasaekeinordertomakeitpossibletobesuccessulaswearetoday.

Writingaboutalumniduesisonlyslightlymorepleasantthanwritingabbowelresection.TedierenceisthatalthoughIknowalmostnothingothelattknowahelloalotabouttheormer,becauseduesarewhatkeepthisraggrindintwiceeachyear.And,Ihavetosay,thoseoyouwhocontinuetorenewyouralumembership,whocontributetoourcoers,wholetusknowinsomanywaysthaarecommittedtoKE,whocaresomuch,arethepeoplewhomakeitpossibleotopublishNuNewsandsendittwiceayeartoyou--aswellastothosewho,per
dontcareasmuch. InnalizingourDuesHonorRollorthisissue,Inoticethatwearedconsiderablyinnumbersorthistimeoyear.MostothemissingnamesaresimFraterswhoorgetunlessreminded.WemaintainedourAlumniMembershipduamodest$30ormany,manyyears,raisingitto$50onlyrecently.SomeFraternmembershipsareinexcesso$100ayear--somethingwehopeneverhappenshItmakesmuchmorepleasantsensetodealwithgreaternumbersomembersthaosterexclusivitybyraisingduesagain. Te publication oNuNewsis ourgreatestAlumniAssociation expendrainingsome$4,000romthetilleachyear.Dothemath,andyoullseethatwe80paidmembershipsjusttoundournewsmagazine.Teobvioussolutionsinregardareunthinkable,atleasttome:First,signicantlyreducethesizeandquoNuNews;second,publishitonlyonceayear;andthird,mailitonlytoFratershaverenewedtheirmembership.Letsnotgothereatall. Onanotherlevel,letslookatmembership.IFraterswhojoinusregularwellasthosewhocomeandgo,wouldlookattheircheckregistersorintotheirhtheymayseethattheyhaveorgottentorenewtheirmembership,orperhapsdecisignononceagain.Tis,initsel,wouldmakeusveryhappyaslongaswestayabwater. Itis,perhaps,utiletopursuetheiravor.Rathereisanelementbetweenourfailingatwindmillsandpreachingtothechoirth
needsodesperatelytoaddress.ItisthatgroupoFraterswhostilllovetheirFraternwhosendusnewso themselves,theiramilies,theirsuccessesand theirhopesdreamswhogotolunchtogether--whoplaypoker,gol,andwatchtheSuperBtogetherwhoevengoonvacationstogether.Teyknowtheyareekes,anddrawheavilyonthatbond;andthat,Isuppose,asmembersotheFrraternityForisthemostimportantthing.Buthey!--theydonotcontributetooureortstoktheamilytogether. TispastspringrushbroughtthebiggestpledgeclasssinceheKappaclassoSpring2007.Tissemester,theXiclassstartedutwith26members,aprettyevendistributionoreshmenandophomores.Teclassisnowdownto21membersgoingintothe
tartoweek7.Te class seemed to click eortlessly during Alumni
ChapterAdvisorPeterClovensbondingnight,wheretheyacedaewchallengesasagroupandwereencouragedtoopenuptoeachther.Teyallseemedtobemovedsignicantlybytheevent,andllsharedanexcitedenergyoverwhatwastocome.
Sophomores om Paulino and Danny Freisingerwere elected president andice-president o the classespectively. Tese positionsre dicult enough, but the
woaceauniquechallengeineading and organizing suchlargeclass.Soartheyhave
handled the task quite well,nd truly possess the respectndadmirationromtherestoheirclass.
Te biggest challengeotheclasssoarhasbeeninonding together as a group.Like any large group, cliquesnaturallyorm.Teclassisnow
eginningtoseetheimportancebreakingout o their shellsndpushingtheircomortzonesnorder togrow inthepledgeprocess, andhave started takingmeasurestobreakup cliqueswithin the group. Tey stillhavelongwaytogo,butIseesomepromisingutureleadersandontributorstoKEintheXiClass.
Inadditiontodevelopingthemembercandidates,wewillebeginninganewKENationalprogramcalledtheBlueprintProgram.Tisprogramwill set goalsor raters toreachaterheybecomeinitiatedasbrothers.Wehopethatthisprogramwillontinuethemorallessonsothepledgeprocessandwillurthertrengthenouroundationashonestandmoralmen. IcanonlymaginetheimmensepositiveeecttheBlueprintProgramwillhaveonourhouseandthechapterasawhole.

Withthesemestersendjustaroundthecorner,itsamazingoseetheprogressthatKEhasmadesincemypledgesemesterastspring.WhatdrewmetoKEsostronglyasapotentialwashesensethateverybrotherhadaconnectiontothehousestrongerhananyotherhouseIhadvisited.MygoalasHypopheteswaso continue producing an environment that allowed such anxtraordinarybond,while,atthesametime,instillingthesamedeterminationItakeinmyacademicgoalsinallourmen.Looking
ack,itisclearthatbothbrotherhoodandacademicshavemaderemendousgrowth.
Academically,KE hasseen itsGPAriseuptotheAllGreekAverageGPAoa3.25.Ourgoalorthenexttwosemestersstocontinuethistrendbyreachinga3.4houseGPA.Wehavelsostartedinstitutingnewmeanstohelpeachbrotherachievehiswnindividualacademicgoals.
In terms o Brotherhood, the house has continued toemain at ull capacity or the last two semesters, andmemberarticipationhasremainedstrongwitheverincreasingnumbers.Tis semester especially, we have tried to implement more
rotherhood events, including KE Assassins and paintball.Member respect isextremely high,andwith retreat around theorner,wehopetobuildupontheoundingsixpillarsandinstillhementirelywithinallourmembers.Ourhopesaretoestablishuniquegoalsoreachbrotherbeoreandduringretreat,andtoheck in on each brother individually throughout the comingmonthstoseethattheyliveuptotheirgoalssuccessully.
Witheveryewsemesters,thehousechangesdramatically,ndthereisalwaysaearthatbrotherhood,morale,andacademicswillslipaswell.However,ianything,thechangesthathavebeenunderwaysinceMuclasshavebeenorthebetter.NotonlyhasourGPAasawholeincreased,butwearecomingupwithbrighterand
etterwaystocontinueabrotherhoodbasedonmorethanjustartiesandwomen.Alongwithanewpledgeclasso21men,itwillbeinterestingtoseehowthehousedynamicschangeoverthenexttwosemesters.

As the coming year draws to a close, theKE houseemains in a constant state o improvement and development.everalpointsointerestdeservenotice.ArecentupgradeothenternethardwarehasprovidedamorereliableconnectiontothenternetorallourFraters.Tewoodfoorsdownstairsarebeingandblastedandredone,givingthislivingspaceamuchneededacet.Plansareunderwaytocreateanewprotectedbikerackoutside
tokeeptheentrywayscleanandprovidemorespacedownsandthroughoutthehouse.Furthermore,KEDay,thesemesall-housecleanup,willnotonlygiveusanopportunitytodosspring cleaningbut also provide a great chance or brothereconnectaterspringbreakandmidterms;itisscheduledinweeks.Last,butcertainlynotleast,theNuclasswillberebuithebarbecueinthebackyard.Everybrotherhasbeenworkhardtomaintainandimprovethehouse,anditiswithrelishthsayweurgeallalumnitovisitwhenevertheycan.Weareworkhardnotonlyorourselvesandoruturemembers,butora

helpwecan,whenwecan,toaidthosereachingout,thoselessortunate,andalsothecommunityatlarge.TereareguyswhoarenvolvedinYouth-Mentoringprogramsaroundthebay,takingon
heopportunitytoosterachildsgrowthanddevelopmentduringheirearlyyearsinschool.ekesmeetwiththeirmenteesweekly,notonlycheckingontheirscholasticprogressbutalsospendingimewiththeminreallyun,wholesomeeventslikegoingtolocaloncerts,watchingthelatestmovieintheatres,andparticipatingnthementeesavoritesportsorhobbies.Onecanreallyseetheuidance and direction the men oKEcan provide or theseoungbuddingminds.

membersothedisabledcommunitytoplayhoursobasketballnanunconventionalmethodtomostous.Teratersandtheirdisabledteammatesalikegetsomuchenjoymentoutothisonoingeventthatmemberseagerlycontinuetoparticipatewheneverheopportunityarises.

Ithasbeenveyearssinceourre-charteringin2004,andhechapterispressingorward.Terontdeck,originallybuiltbyheallpledgeclasso1983,wasremovedandrebuilt.Tepowderoomhasbeenrenovatedandisnowfankedbynewbookshelvesnddesks,servingasastudyroomoruturegenerationsoekes.
Namessuchasnearcave,arcave,andthirdfoorcloset,havebeeneplacedwithnumberssuchasC1,C2,and3DD.Duringarecentisit,theGrandPrytanis,MarkJohnson,saidthatourchapterwasneothebesthehadseen.NuChapter,inmyopinion,hasnevereenbetter.However,aswepressorward,weourlosingabitourpast.
Whenthehousewasabandoned in1995,theChapterRoom,andthehistorywithin,wasremovedandstoredbyvariouslumni.Muchothishistory,inactIwouldsayamajorityothishistory,isstillmissing.NograduatingseniorhashadthehonorowearingaKEstoletograduation.Noactivememberhashadthehonorousingtheoriginalritualequipment,mostowhichwas
nlyissuedtosingleletterchapters.Newmembersareletwithquicksnapshotsocertainyearsromthescrapbooksandminuteookswestillhave.
