“What makes a leader”
Partner, Head of Deloitte’s audit practice for the Caspian Region
Mr. Andrew Weekes shared with students his personal experience and discussed with them what it takes to be a leader. He stated that leaders are followed by people because they create an atmosphere that makes everyone feel comfortable.
He has also mentioned that those who are the first to follow someone is often under appreciated, albeit these first followers are also potential leaders who take courage to take first step.
“Managed career development”
Value Proposition Director, Beeline Kazakhstan
Mr. Sergey Nishchev discussed how a person should look at his or her career path. Success at work depends on a person’s individual development. Therefore, a person should all the time be engaged in new activities and take on new responsibilities. Mr. Nishchev stated that to be successful means to get outside one’s comfort zone. Moreover, a leader should inspire his or her team to new heights, otherwise, he/she won’t be able to grow.

Majoring in Chemical Engineering – Industry Overview and Future Prospects Folks majoring in chemical engineering, good news for you, your industry is Vlourishing, growing and supported by the Government.
If you are a freshman and not sure what is your major about, this paragraph is FYI. Chemical engineers work in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, design and construction, petrochemicals, food processing, biotechnology and environmental health industries . The pillars 1
of chemical engineers are knowledge of math and science used to overcome technical problems safely and cost-‐effectively.
The chemical industry is one of the largest suppliers of raw material and intermediate materials to other sectors of the real economy worldwide. In 2010, the Government of Republic of Kazakhstan issued Decree on “Chemical industry development program in Kazakhstan for 2010-‐2014.” The Government involvement was necessary due to the reports showing the industry decline from 2004 to 2009 years.
If we compare the magnitude of the chemical industry in Kazakhstan with world leaders, then in terms of the share of industry in the GDP of Kazakhstan it is 10-‐20 times less than in China, Singapore, the U.S, Germany and other leading chemical powers.
Nonetheless, the positive result of the program is already visible. The chemical cluster of special economic zone (SEZ) in Pavlodar region already provides mass production. This SEZ involves concentration of 45 plants for the production of a wide range of products. A number of them have no analogues in the CIS.
In 2009 JSC “Samruk-‐Kazyna” has established LLP “United Chemical Company” (UCC). The company is engaged in the chemical industry projects, and, as for today, is implementing 11 investment projects. In 2013, the UCC approved the decision of the Development Strategy for 2012-‐2022. That means chemical engineers will have their job positions at least until 2022 year. Jokes aside, this industry is at the early stage of serious

development and you could ride this wave and get to the top faster.
NAC “Kazatomprom” has also started construction of a pilot plant for the preparation of marine brines in the Mangystau region, MNPC (Мангистауский Атомный ЭнергоКомбинат). To mention it brieVly, chemical industry is developing in Atyrau, Pavlodar, Shymkent, Karaganda and Taraz cities.
The second wave of Government’s support came in 2014 year, with the President’s Decree on “Industrial innovation development program on 2015-‐2019.” Six priority sectors are selected among which 3rd is the chemical industry; others are manufacturing, metallurgy, petrochemicals, machinery, construction materials and food industry.
The sector is represented by enterprises producing sulfuric acid (LLP "CPS-‐U”, LLP "Kazphosphate"), yellow phosphorus (LLP "Kazphosphate"), chromium compounds (JSC
"Aktobe plant of chromium compounds"), hydroVluoric acid (LLP "Ulbaftor-‐Complex"), the chlor-‐alkali segment (JSC "Caustic"), paints and varnishes (group of companies “Alina”), explosives (JSC "Orica Kazakhstan").
Major players in the sector are "Kazphosphate" LLC, whose share in the total output of the chemical industry is 22%, JSC "Aktobe plant of chromium compounds" -‐ 12.5%, JSC "Caustic" -‐ 2.4%. Sector of chemical products for industry produces mainly for domestic consumption, as most of the products are difVicult to transport and are dangerous for the human health.
For the further development of the sector Kazakhstan is trying to attract international chemical companies to implement investment projects. Currently, the Government is negotiating with international companies, such as China Kingho Energi Group Co., Ltd. (China), IndussGroup (Belgium), DowChemicalsCompani (USA), Lanxess (Germany), GreenDay (Germany), and LanzaTech (USA).
Majoring in Economics – Employment Opportunities and Prospects It is being discussed in the most U.S. articles, Russian newspapers and is observable in Kazakhstan; majoring in economics is popular. You will see some pros and cons of this trend.
Economics majors’ popularity means there is a demand for these specialists. This profession has a fat plus, it is intersectoral. You should have a good understanding of the national economy and be able to think critically. Regardless of an industry, being a good economist also means having excellent math and econometrics skills and good command of econometrics software. Additionally, good communication skills and skills in manipulating data are basic requirements to switch from any industry or company . 2
You can Vind a job in the business sector, since companies, especially, big corporations refer to business economists to understand and adapt to a changing economic environment. Here you need to interpret and forecast the general economic
climate and analyze conditions speciVic to the company.
According to kurs.kz, a business-‐consultant is the second most popular profession after oil and gas

industry specialists. The average salary of a business consultant is 143 331 tenge, the highest – 1 085 441 tenge . 3
The government sector also provides with the range of jobs for economists. You can work in the Vields of agriculture, business, Vinance, labor, transportation, utilities, urban economics and international trade. Here you have a space to combine multiple of your interests, e.g. majoring in economics and have keen interest in agriculture. You can also teach, if you decide to get your M.A and PhD in Economics. Additionally, there are entities such as international organizations, associations and nonproVits, in case you want to do some good not only for yourself or country but also to the human kind.
Now let’s turn to some downsides of economics major. Demand meets supply; there are wide ranges of universities that give knowledge in Economics and students with this diploma. You have a tough competition.
Another problem here is that most economics majors and schools provide with too general knowledge. Not having focused economic skills and knowledge might become an obstacle in your job search. Theory is good on paper; you’d better have some work related skills. Overall, with a major in economics you should be able to do three major things.
First, be able to solve complex problems analytically and critically. Second, be skilled in observation and inference data. Finally, you must be able to present ideas in compelling writing and speech.
Therefore, a piece of advice for future economists, hone your additional skills depending on your scope of interest. These skills could be research/analysis, Vinancial/data, problem solving or communication.
By the way, folks, know what is going on in economic sector. Be up to date. There is an Association of Economists in Kazakhstan (economist.kz) that could be a good reference for you. You can Vind many other useful sources.
N.B. To earn big money, you must be a specialist in your subject matter. To be a specialist means you need to be passionate about what you do. If you are passionate, you never stop learning something related and not quite to your profession and industry.
