From Dawn’s Desk
November is the month for Thanksgiving. When you are a pastor, Thanksgiving is
a truly relaxed holiday. Christmas is wonderfully busy with the story of Jesus’ birth
and all the ways we tell it: worship, the Living Nativity, concerts, children’s story
hour, and all the family events you engage in. I remember when I was working at First
Church, Concord, I would get home after midnight from the last Christmas Eve Ser-
vice and Greg and I would be putting Santa toys together before Nathan awoke at 5
am. Then, I would be making Christmas dinner for the family. I was exhausted. Of
course, we refused all Christmas Eve parties, but then, parties never interested us. For my family, we
would always gather on Thanksgiving, and in these last years, Nathan with seniority at the PD, has been
able to claim Thanksgiving as a day off. Good thing because he is now the great Turkey cook!
In this month of Thanksgiving and gratitude, I want to express my gratitude for our ministry and
mission together. I am thankful:
For your support of me during these seven years
For being willing to work together to maintain our ministry
For taking on new work to expand the Thrift Shop and Christmas at the Brook
For giving financially from the heart
I also want you to know what I celebrate:
A good sense of community among us (one member graciously told me that when I leave,
Brookside will not see an exodus of members. This is what I have worked for, the Church
community, not my personal club!)
The children and youth growing among us – listen to their responses in children’s stories,
see their faithfulness and love!
A sense of vitality and participation in worship
The continuing mission of our church in outreach
Expanding outreach to include a Day of Service on MLK Day
Becoming Open and Affirming
Enacting our media strategy
Here’s what I feel is left undone:
Expanding the financial base to sustain this ministry
Needing to further work on the bylaws that will invite members to participate, rather than
burn out
Retaining members once youth are grown and not in the church school
Reminding ministries to plan ahead so staff is not so overwhelmed in the fall with all the
programs
More than anything, I want Brookside to thrive because of my work and despite my work. We are
at a threshold of new possibility. Some can hold out for a merger with First Church, Manchester; but
I don’t see that happening in the foreseeable future, yet there are possibilities of sharing ministries
together that we can maximize on when First and we have new settled pastors. And, I am hoping the
Search Committee will be bold in calling a younger pastor who not only understands the tech stuff, but
will be here for a time encouraging you to serve in ways that not only mean money but engage you to be
with others who you would never know (like our wonderful time at Elmwood Gardens on MLK Day),
inviting others to come on in, and challenging you to reach out in justice and service to Manchester and
beyond in ways I don’t even imagine! Brookside is a leader in the City; keep the faith and go forward
into the future with God!
Love you,
Dawn

New Tree Planted and Dedicated
On October 17, a memorial marker and
tree were dedicated in loving memory of
Denise Robert by her family. Pastor Dawn
and Father Moe from Ste. Marie participated.
Preparing for Pastor Dawn’s Retirement
On Sunday, November 1, we will welcome the Rev. Richard Slater, Associate Conference Minis-
ter, to talk about ethical boundaries when a pastor retires. Some of you wonder if you can communicate
with a former pastor or if a former pastor will come back to visit or co-officiate at weddings and funer-
als. What's up with Facebook? Rev. Slater will talk about all of this and more, the reasons behind the
boundaries and respond to questions you have. Join him and Pastor Dawn in the Manning House Parlor
after worship.
Let Us All Be Thankful
This year’s Interfaith Thanksgiving Service will be held at Holy Trinity
Cathedral (Polish National Catholic Church), 166 Pearl Street, Manchester, on
Monday, November 23 at 7:00 pm. The church interior was newly redone
and is spectacular! You are invited to join with other faith groups from around
the city for worship, including music provided by an interfaith choir, during
this special opportunity to reflect on our many blessings.
Help Our Music Ministry Prepare for December
December is just around the corner which means there are op-
portunities to enjoy extra music at Brookside! The Chancel Choir
will present our annual cantata during worship on December 13
and is busily preparing for our 6th annual concert "Christmas at
Brookside: Comfort and Joy!" which will take place Saturday,
December 19 at 3:00 followed by a Living Nativity at 5:00. There
will be an opportunity to enjoy cookies and cocoa in Manning House in between the two events. Admis-
sion is FREE but we ask concert-goers to bring non-perishable donations for New Horizons and suggest
a $5 donation to Brookside to support our music ministry.
In the meantime, we need church school children to sign up for our Christmas Eve pageant right
away! We are beginning to rehearse during our Junior Choir time at 11:30 on Sundays and look forward
to having as many kids join in as possible! (You do not have to sing to participate.) Please see me for
more information.
In peace and harmony,
Kim Whitehead, Minister of Music ([email protected])

Money & Time, Hospitality – Helping Our Kids Develop Skills for Life On November 1st we finish up the second three-week session of “Money and Time.” This session
had three workshops: Art taught by Fran Hakenson, Science taught by Suzanne Pyszka, and Video
taught by Dawn Brockett, Stephanie Strandson and Kate Wickham.
November 8th we will start a new Unit, “Giving and Receiving Hospitality.” This Unit fits well into
our theme for this year, “Room for You.” The focus story for this Unit is Genesis 18:1-15. Since this
Unit takes us up to Christmas we will also be using the story from Luke 2:1-7, the birth of Jesus. The
children will be exploring the importance of hospitality in the church community and how they can be
welcoming and show hospitality here and in the world outside the church.
Make an Ornament for the Church’s Christmas Tree!!
This year we will not be having the Advent Workshop where we made
ornaments for the tree, but we still need to make ornaments so our tree can
be decorated. On Sundays, November 22 through December 6 there will
be a table set up at Fellowship Hour with all the material to make orna-
ments. There will be three different ornament designs this year: stars, man-
gers and stables. We ask you to stop by and make an ornament or two!
Both Youth Groups Set to Make Chocolates for the Fair

This will be a combined event with the High School and Middle School Groups and will take place
in Fellowship Hall kitchen. If you have questions, please contact Ellen Smith Tourigny 854-0684 or

wreaths and much more.

munity event over the past 50 years and we’d love to have you join us. You can download the vendor

contact Becky Boisvert at 315-8614 or via email at [email protected].
READY, SET, DOUGH!!
The annual Christmas Fair is just around the corner and we need
homemade goods for the bake sale. We have plenty of apple pies but
would love to have a wider variety. Peach, cherry, pumpkin, or your
famous family recipes would make great additions to the sale. Some of
the other best sellers are smaller pies and sweet breads [not to be confused with sweetbreads – editor].
Be creative. Bake early and often. There is no limit on the number of entries. We are also looking for
folks to make baked beans which are sold by the quart at the bake sale table. If you have any questions
or need encouragement/ baking therapy please call Nancy Popp at 755-4880 or [email protected].
Thank you! See you at the fair...and don't forget to invite all your friends and family.
Get Those Cookie Sheets Ready!
This year, we will feature a Cookie Walk at the Christmas Fair. Imagine a table
(or maybe two – we dare to dream) filled with all sorts of scrumptious cookies....
you walk alongside the table with a bag and fill it will all of your favorites, maybe
try something new and bring them home to delight your friends and family! Lots
and lots of cookies are needed for the Cookie Walk. So cookie chefs, drag out your favorite recipes and
whip up some sugary delights to help make this walk a cookie lover's dream! Please contact Denise
Forest at [email protected] or call 203-3803 to donate or with any questions. We ask that there be
no peanut, peanut butter cookies or coconut used due to allergies.

Women’s Union Prepares Premium Pies
The Women’s Union October 10 meeting began on a positive note with eighteen members and
guests armed with all the necessary equipment to tackle two bushels of apples. It was an afternoon of
fun, fellowship and productivity. In two hours’ time, twenty-six apple pies were assembled, packaged
and stored in the kitchen freezer for sale at the Christmas Fair. With an hour remaining, we had time for
lunch, a brief meeting and kitchen clean-up. Many thanks to all who made this project a success and to:
Jean Dickson for sustaining Women’s Union
Fran Hakenson for making “52” batches of pie dough and sharing her prized apple pie recipe
Ruth Bodge and Donna Moody for calling members
Carole Whitcher for obtaining pie plates and containers
Carol Delle for harvest decorations
Wilson Farm for securing premium apple drops at a reasonable price
Bertha Siesicki for assisting me with ordering and delivery of the apples
Pies may be purchased frozen or freshly baked at the November 14 Christmas Fair for $15.00.
Just one more thing! Women’s Union will be meeting on Saturday, December 12 from 11:00 am to
2:30 pm in the Manning House. The program consists of donating and wrapping gifts for Liberty House
and enjoying a lunch prepared by the Executive Committee. A call to Carole Whitcher at 497-8197 and
a $5.00 donation will secure your reservation.

Two People Needed to Coordinate Flowers
After many years of dedicated service, Anne Lachance is stepping down
from the Flower Committee. We are thankful for all she has done to assure that
there are flowers at our weekly worship services throughout the year. We are
now searching for two individuals who would be willing to coordinate the or-
dering of flowers for worship on Sundays.
The responsibilities include contacting church members by e-mail or phone to find out if they wish
to donate flowers on a particular date. Many people have historically given in memory of a loved one on
a specific date. The flower coordinator would contact these people to confirm that they want to donate
on a particular date, ask about the kind of arrangement, determine in whose name or memory the flowers
are given and if the family wants to pick up the arrangements or donate them to someone who is sick or
in a nursing home. The flower coordinator contacts Royal Bouquet to place the order and Deacons de-
liver the flowers if the families do not wish to keep them. Royal Bouquet bills directly to the families
who donate, so there is no need to collect money from them.
When there is a Sunday with no donations, the flower coordinator would write a short blurb in the
bulletin or Chronicle indicating there is an open date for flowers. Additional responsibilities include
placing orders for poinsettias at Christmas, ordering the advent wreath and ordering Easter Lilies.
Please contact Denise Forest at [email protected] or 203-3803 if you are interested in serving
Brookside in this way.

Help with Holiday Family Meal Baskets, and More!
Brookside has a wonderful tradition of working together with community
agencies to provide Holiday Meals for families in need. This year Mission
Ministry is collecting food to provide for 62 baskets to be distributed the Mon-
day before Thanksgiving. We encourage you to sign up in Fellowship Hall on
Sundays to bring nonperishable foods (canned vegetables, fresh potatoes, fresh
carrots, stuffing, cranberry sauce, apples, cookies, hot chocolate), or consider
donating funds equal to a holiday meal basket.
Food items need to be in Fellowship Hall by the end of Fellowship Hour on Sunday, November 15
so that an order can be placed for the remaining food needed to fill the baskets on the following Sunday,
November 22. We invite you to help in setting up Fellowship Hall Saturday morning, November 21
starting at 9:00 am.
Help is also needed on Monday morning, November 23 to distribute baskets.
During the Christmas season we will be having a Baby Supplies Drive (food and formula, diapers
(all sizes) and wipes, clothing, blankets, bottles and liners) working with community agencies for most
effective distribution.
Your involvement and commitment to support the larger Manchester community is so very much
appreciated. Thank you one and all!
Seeking Hosts for SNHU’s Thanksgiving Hosts Program
Southern New Hampshire University is seeking hosts willing to invite pairs
of international students to join your family’s Thanksgiving celebration. Many
international students are eager for the chance to visit an American family and
learn more about our culture and traditions. Newer arrivals feel most comforta-
ble when they can bring a fellow student, which is why SNHU looks for folks
who can accommodate two or more guests. SNHU has more than 900 international students studying at
the Manchester campus; while they come from about 70 different countries, more than half come from
China, Saudi Arabia, or India.
The reactions of both the students and families who’ve participated in the past have been very posi-
tive. From hosts: “had a terrific time”; “fantastic day”; “fit right in with my family”; “enlightening”;
“great experience for the entire family”; “something I will never forget”. Students have said: “spent a
really wonderful and unforgettable time”; “I learned about American people”; “we had conversation like
friends”; “my family back home were very happy for me”; “they let me help prepare the dinner (or the
table)”; “I always wanted to visit with an American family”; “I hope I can do this again”.
If you are interested in inviting two or more international students to join your family’s Thanksgiv-
ing celebration, please complete the host family application at the www.snhu.edu SNHU website (click
on the International Student link on the top of the opening page, then on the International Student Ser-
vices link on the left, then ISS Forms and Resources) and return it by November 9 to Debbie Donnelly
at SNHU at [email protected] or ISS Office, 2500 N. River Rd., Manchester, NH 03106. In mid-
November after receiving host and student applications, Debbie will be in touch with names and contact
information for the students you’ll be hosting for the day, so that you can reach them to coordinate
plans.
This is a truly wonderful opportunity for all who are involved. Please consider opening up your
home to share this day when we give thanks for all that is good in our lives.

Brookside Church – Help Spread the Word
Did you know that there are nearly 200,000 active social media users within a ten mile radius of
Brookside? What this means for us is that we can use interactive sites such as Facebook to spread
awareness to new people about all the good work we do here at our church and out in the community.
It has been about one month since Brookside launched its new website, and a newly branded look
and feel on its existing social media pages (Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram). You may have already
noticed that we have recently become more active online. We have invested in having a professional
marketing consultant spend her time and strategic approach in helping us create online content. Making
the most of limited resources, most recently she has set up paid advertising for specific upcoming events
such as the Christmas at the Brook craft fair, to ensure we are reaching targeted audiences that might not
already know about us but would likely be interested to participate. In addition, our own Kira More-
house, Jeff Rapson, and Laura Sevigny have been leading the charge with support from Vicky Wisner
who is coordinating needs with our marketing consultant on a day-to-day basis.
EVERYONE is encouraged to become more active and engaged with the church via social media
participation. This is particularly important if you are on a committee or planning a public-facing event
for our church that needs to be publicized through our online sites. Please feel free to reach out and con-
nect. As church leaders, when people see you supporting our efforts online then they are 100% more
likely to follow your lead because your enthusiasm then has an opportunity to become viral when you
spread the word through online channels.
Our goal is to have more active users and encourage everyone to engage with us in order to build up
our online presence. Social media efforts only work well when people participate on a continual basis.
In turn, small efforts from individuals can help us attract potential new members but it only works if our
current members help us with this effort by being active participants.
If you are already among the hundreds of thousands of social media users here in Greater Manches-
ter, next time you are logged in please take a moment to visit us and "Like," "Pin," Follow," or other-
wise share and connect the posts we are publishing on a daily basis. These are simple acts that can build
into something greater for our church. Also, it never hurts to spread a little positivity by sharing good
news and inspirational content with online friends. If you are not already doing these things, please feel
free to ask someone about getting started.
