Pathways to Boatbuilding3 TO 5 YEAR APPRENTICESHIPThe NS BBAP consists of three pathways: Advanced Fibre
Composites, Metal and Wood. Apprentices, paired with
experienced tradespeople who have undergone certification as a
Boat Builder with the province, earn course credits while
performing job-related skills and completing workbooks. The
program involves the use of a logbook to record evidence of
competencies which are assessed by the Industry Training
Coordinator (ITC) for the NSBA and the ATD. Each program spans
3 to 5 years of on the job experience and completing workbooks.

ADVANCED FIBRE COMPOSITES
Also known as the Fibre-Reinforced Plastics
(FRP)/Composites stream, this is the pathway taken by
apprentices learning to build, repair, or restore
composite boats—like NSfishing boats and pleasure
craft.
METALThe Metal pathway is for
apprentices learning to form, shape and assemble steel
and aluminum plates. Steel and aluminum are often used
in workboats and large pleasure boats like trawler
yachts.
WOODWooden boatbuilding is the
traditional art form best known to most Nova Scotians.
Apprentices studying in this stream will construct wooden
framework and joinery, and sheath a boat's framework
using wood andFRP/composites. Wood (or wood epoxy) boats include
small and large pleasure craft like dories and schooners.
LEARNING CLOSE TO HOME The Nova Scotia Boat Builder
Apprenticeship Program (BBAP) is an
on-the-job apprentice program that is
cooperatively organized by the Nova
Scotia Boatbuilders Association
(NSBA) and the NS Department of
Labour and Advanced Education—
Apprenticeship Training Division
(ATD).
In 2005, the NSBA signed the first-ever
licensing agreement with the New
Zealand Marine Industry Training
Organisation to adapt and deliver their
boat builder training materials to
apprentices who are registered in
Canada's Maritime provinces. The NSBA
office in Halifax develops and helps
administer a Certificate of Qualification
under the leadership of the ATD, who
regulate trades and designate boat
builders in the province.
Over 100 individuals have become
certified boat builders since the trade was
designated in 2005—and this number
continues to grow.
It’s not hard to understand why:
boatbuilding is a Nova Scotian heritage
trade made up of many different skills and
backgrounds. Whether you are a recent
high school graduate, have just finished a
community college program in welding or
mechanics, or have been interested in
designing and lofting up boats for years,
there’s something for everyone in the NS
BBAP.
Which direction will you go?
