On the Road Again

Several years ago, a group of us, or maybe it was a committee since we are Presbyterians, was trying to come up with a catchy phrase to describe our hands-on mission activities. I think we came up with "Takin' It to the Streets" and "On the Road Again." Well, the latter was appropriate in early May when nine of us traveled to the rolling hills of southern Indiana to help in the rebuilding effort in the aftermath of the tornado that leveled Henryville, IN just more than a year ago.

Our team included Bill and Vickie Back, Carolyn Beauvais and Bill Newman, Don and LeeAnn Hemberg, Peggie Schiller, Jeff Wilhelmi and me. We were assigned to work on the new home being constructed for Angela Rodewig whose house was literally blown away by the tornado. Don Hemberg brought and applied his terrific skills at both house-building and team-building. Bill Back tackled the labyrinthine wiring that a previous volunteer group had installed and made some "shocking" discoveries. Peggie Schiller charmed everyone in sight and became the "Ambassador" for the group.

I was struck, though not surprised, by how nice each member of our team is. There were no divas, whiners, bullies, slackers or other malcontents. We carried ladders, doors and dripping paint brushes past each other in the narrow hallway of the house with great patience and tolerance. We pitched in to help carry a generator up the stairs, grabbed the other end of a long piece of molding, helped steady the door assembly one of our folks was carrying into a bedroom. Well, you get the point. We helped. We all used our different gifts. And it felt great.

When we had the chance to share dinner, prayer and tears with Angie Rodewig and 2 of her 3 children, it was clear that we all had received a gift - the opportunity for fellowship and service. I can't wait for our next field trip.

Our Newest Members

Ryan Larson and Nathan Higley

Ryan Larson is in the 8th grade and is 13 years old. He attends Berkshire Middle School in Birmingham Public Schools. He grew up in Michigan and likes to attend martial arts classes, play guitar and read in his free time. Ryan lives with his parents, Liz and Keith and his brother, Brendan (10) and cousin, Kyle (7). His favorite vacation was when his family went to Disney World for the first time.

Nathan Higley is currently in 8th grade. He grew up mostly in Beverly Hills but also in Royal Oak. His hobbies are football, baseball, basketball and other athletics and also birding. Nathan doesn’t have much free time because of school and after school activities, but when he does, he likes to go outside and do stuff like birding or work out. Nathan’s family is his Dad (Erik), Mom (Camille), younger sister (Claire), younger brother (Owen) and Nathan. They also have a dog (Pippi) and snake (Red Eye). His favorite vacation was when he went to Mendocino and Yosemite in California because it was fun, interesting, pretty, and it’s where his birding started. Nathan is going on Northbrook’s Mission Trip this year for the first time.

The Confirmation Dinner 2013

Judy Owen and Tracey Watt created a delicious meal for the Confirmation Dinner Monday, May 13. Helping them were Lauren and Alex Guindi from last year’s class and Griffin Watt who stepped forward and volunteered when we needed more help. Thanks to this great kitchen crew for all their hard work.

The two confirmands, Ryan Larson and Nathan Higley, presented the answers to a series of questions throughout the confirmation dinner. As part of their statement of faith presentations, pictures were presented on the big screen in Fellowship Hall showing them as they grew up participating in church activities over the years, participating in service projects during the

confirmation year and pictures of their participation in martial arts for Ryan and birding and football for Nathan. These pictures certainly showed how Northbrook members, youth directors, teachers and friends have kept the baptismal covenant that was made by this congregation when these two boys were young and enrolled on the baptismal roll of Northbrook Presbyterian Church.

A special thanks to Kari Gorman, Bob Filter and Janelle Moulding who came and shared their own faith journeys with the confirmands!

Ryan and Nathan have been active in so many programs and service projects in the church. Some include Mid-highs, spring clean up day, KIDS’ Connection, Northbrook Church Camp, Springhill for retreats, making a meal for SOS, Vacation Bible School, Where in the World, Christmas caroling at nursing homes and for shut-ins, playing the guitar in worship, delivering food boxes, helping to organize the Christmas Angel Tree gifts, LOGOS, putting zucchini in bags for Forgotten Harvest to feed people who couldn’t afford food, delivering food boxes, working at the food bank, washing dishes, helping with coffee hour, setting up the labyrinth, preparing lunch for the new members’ class, making chili for the Chili Cook-off, walking at Light the Night in memory of Ryan Miller and attending church. That’s quite a list! Ryan says that he does these things because some are fun, and because he wants to do them. He learns things and is able to show his faith by the things he does, not just the things he says. Nate says he doesn’t do these things because he has to. It’s not doing it just because it’s a good thing to do, but because it comes from your heart!

Please welcome them as Northbrook’s newest members.

Congratulations Are In Order

Congratulations to Brooke Sandercock who is completing sixth grade and Nathan Sylvia who is completing eighth grade as they received The Youth in Service Appreciation Award.

Only 17 middle schoolers received this award this year. Sponsored by Birmingham Youth Assistance and the Birmingham Optimists Club, these two middle school youth were nominated by their principals for their efforts to make their community a better place.

As Lori Sandercock said in a message to the church: “I just wanted to thank you (Ken and Sherrill) for nurturing our kids and providing them with community service opportunities. Brooke would never have been nominated by her principal if it had not been for the great youth program at Northbrook!”

Summer Worship Begins June 2

June 30 – Sanctuary Building Crisis – The Two Builders

Join us Sunday, June 23 during a special reception to

be held in Barb’s honor immediately following worship

in Fellowship Hall.

Barb has been our Church Administrative Secretary

for 22 Years! We will all miss her!!!

*************

To my Northbrook friends,

After much soul searching and prayer, I have decided that I will be retiring at the end of June. I am very excited to begin this new phase of my life, but I will miss all of you tremendously.

We have been through a lot together in the past 22 years. You have supported me through all the ups and downs in my life, and I am very thankful for that. I hope I have been helpful to you and your families when you have needed support.

It has been an honor and privilege to serve as your Administrative Secretary at Northbrook all of these years. I am very thankful to have had that opportunity. There will always be a special place in my heart for all of you.

Blessings, Barb

Congratulations Barb Paulson on your Retirement!!!

June and July Presbytery of Detroit Hands-on Mission Opportunities

There are many ways to get involved and to show you care.

There will be a Presbytery-wide Gleaners Food Drive for the month of July. You may place your donations of non-perishable food items in the large boxes that will be in Fellowship Hall. Guidelines for types of donations will be displayed on the mission bulletin board and/or on the boxes.

Nine Presbytery of Detroit/Synod of the Covenant Mobile Health Festivals at churches around the Presbytery. Volunteers are needed at all locations of the festivals. Non-medical volunteers will manage the information tables, assist the Mobile Health Unit staff as needed and escort guests through the screening stations. Volunteers are asked to participate in a training conference call and arrive one hour before the start of their event. The festivals will be held on July 16 and July 27-August 1. A full listing of times and locations will be on the mission bulletin board in Fellowship Hall. Individuals with medical backgrounds may also volunteer.

Are you participating in the Great Tomato Give-away to help fight hunger in metro Detroit? This summer about 40 church congregations in the Presbytery of Detroit are involved, and Northbrook is happy to be a part of this effort.

The Habitat for Humanity Apostle Build for this summer is set for August 17-24. Once again, we will be building more homes in the Morningside community of Detroit. If you are interested in volunteering with hospitality or construction, please look for more info on the web site and/or mission bulletin board.

If you are interested in any of these mission opportunities, please go to the Presbytery of Detroit Hands-on Mission web site at www.hands-on-mission.org or contact Winnie Davies-Hancock at [email protected] or 248-593-8035. More information is posted on the mission bulletin board in Fellowship Hall.

Please consider ways in which you can

live the love of Jesus Christ.

When Life Gives You Lemons

I can almost hear Andy Rooney saying, "Did you ever have one of those days?" When a bad day gets you down, try listing all the things that would pull you out of your mood. The list is endless, of course, and a personal one, but the exercise can be helpful. Try it! Here's a head start:

Read your favorite Bible passage or chapter. Listen to your favorite music. Call or visit a friend who needs cheering up Walk the labyrinth. Clean a closet or room and donate unwanted goods. Go for a walk and observe Nature's beauty. Sit quietly and try to focus on deep breathing. Plan a lunch or activity with a friend and agree to avoid negative topics. Do some simple exercises. Do some gardening to beautify your landscape, then rest and admire your work. Prepare a healthy meal of colorful, in season fresh fruits and vegetables. Spend an hour on your favorite hobby or activity. Start a journal to record your thoughts and feelings. Contact a friend with a note or email or by Skype.

Nathan Paul Long November 14, 1989 - April 30, 2013

A building does not make a church. A church is

made up of kind caring people gathered together in the service of God and to help those in need.

So, it was that a group of church ladies and men took turns in providing me with meals after losing Barbara, my wife of 60 years. I would be remiss if I did not extend sincere compliments on the uniformly high quality and variety of the meals.

A special recognition to Peggy Schiller for coordinating the delivery schedule and her unfailing good humor.

May God Bless Northbrook Church. Henry Horldt

While you are away this summer

This summer, as you lean back on that rocking chair at the cabin and take a long sip of iced tea, rest assured that things are perking along back here at Northbrook. When you are away this summer please remember that we will continue to pay the bills and will need your contributions to fund that. Fortunately, our contribution envelopes are designed for you to just slip in a check and drop it in the mail from your vacation spot. If that doesn’t work for you, you can set up a repetitive check through “pay bills” at your bank. You could also drop one large check in the offering plate before you go. We do appreciate your support and hope that you get well rested on your summer vacation and return to a full schedule of church activity in the fall.

Deficit Through April

We present actual summary results for April year-to-date 2013 to keep the congregation apprised of our financial condition. Comparing the last five years, this year’s deficit was worse than one year but better than three years.

Where in the World will the kids be on….

June 9th - We will gather in Room 6 to make “goodie-bags” for the adults and youth who will be going

on the mission trip to Davenport, Iowa. It will be a lot of fun putting surprises in their bags so the road trip won’t seem so long.

July 20 – The kids will be on a guided walking tour of the Global Village at the Howell Conference and

Nature Center. Our visit is scheduled from 10-12:00 am for the tour. Older siblings and parents are invited.

We will be exploring the model houses and the lives of people living in the diverse regions of the world where the Heifer program works. Through role-playing, games, stories and hands-on artifacts, we’ll learn how humans, animals and education can greatly improve the lives of those in need. Join us for the fun!

Vacation Bible School Vacation Bible School will take place during Sunday morning worship beginning June 2nd. The children will start in worship until the Passing of the Peace. Then, they will come inside to participate in Operation Overboard.

Water is everywhere. The earth’s surface is made up of 70% ocean. The human body is made up of 90% water. Our very lives are sustained by its presence. Thousands of known species of animals call the water their home. Water also plays a large role in our entertainment and relaxation. Join the crew as they Dare to Go Deep with God! Children will participate in a great adventure learning to depend on God, dare to care, claim Jesus, choose to follow and change the world. There will be great crafts and lots of music. Older youth are welcome to help.

Meet Mike Huddlestun

Mike Huddlestun’s three or four successful careers just happen to run simultaneously, and that number may very well increase within a year. He’s a doer and a talker, and his enthusiasm for life’s many opportunities is fast and furious.

His multi-career list begins with the basics, husband, father, church volunteer and professional. He and Julie have been married for 32 years. He’s the proud father of two adult children, Michael, a conservationist and avid sportsman and Jessica “Jess” is in public relations with Quicken Loan. Mike is an active member of Northbrook where he has served as Elder, and where he continues to be deeply involved in music programming. Then, there’s the business career. He is a much-traveled sales, marketing and promotion specialist for ABC Disney Corporation. What with all the new developments in the communications and entertainment industries, things grows more complicated and amazing every year.

However, that’s only the beginning. Mike, a tenor, regularly sings “The Star Spangled Banner” to open American and National League football, baseball and hockey games in this country’s big sports venues. Of all those appearances, he says, “My favorite was at Chicago’s Wrigley Field for the first night game. My whole family came up from Fort Wayne, Indiana (his hometown) to hear me for the first time. I love to sing. I’ve been singing since second grade. I’m not a great singer, but I’m not afraid. I just get up and do it.”

Actually, that get-up-and-do-it attitude is how he got started singing for big sports events. He heard a sorry version of the national anthem while at a game at the Houston Astrodome and called to complain, saying

something like, “Even I can do better than that guy.” The woman, at the other end of the line challenged him to come in and demonstrate, which he did, and promptly landed the assignment.

To prepare that first time, he stopped at a local music store and just happened to run into the stadium keyboardist and, luckily, was able to rehearse with him before his big debut. This calmed his nerves a bit, until, at the last minute, his new friend was unable to perform and a replacement was sent in. Still, faint heart or not, Mike led the Pledge of Allegiance and won his battle with nerves as he did a most acceptable rendition of America’s wonderful, but not-easy-to-sing national anthem. He has sung it many times since with considerably more confidence.

His interest in liturgical music, traditional and contemporary, comes through his family background. “I grew up in church. A lot of my uncles and cousins were ministers. My father, an engineer with Studebaker, was a lay minister.“ Later, he mentioned two good friends, Edgar Struble, film and TV music director, conductor and arranger and Robby Robinson, recording artist (“Jam for Jesus”) and Praise Band leader at Bethlehem Lutheran Ministries of Los Angeles. “ Both of them,” he said, “ have helped me a lot.”

His business career with ABC Disney Corporation opened doors and led to friendships in the entertainment world. His love of music, his performance abilities and his delight in meeting people added another dimension to the ease with which he moves in that star-studded circle. During his time with ABC Disney, he and his family have lived in Los Angeles, Fort Wayne, Cleveland, Houston and Detroit twice. It was here in Detroit that he met his wife, Julie, and soon after met her sister, Mary Beth, and her husband, Jim Parks. The couples have remained best friends and share mutual interests including Northbrook where all four are members. Each couple has young adult offspring, and they, too, are close friends.

Page 11: Northbrook Notes June/July 2013northbrookpc.org/.../2013/07/June-July_Newsletter.pdf · 6/7/2013  · Northbrook Notes June/July 2013 Northbrook Presbyterian Church Newsletter t”

Mike has a dream which may soon become a reality. He’s preparing to produce a TV variety show of music that spans recent generations. It will include children of name performers of the 50s and 60s who are now big stars or have big-star qualities. Think Debbie Boone and Les Brown, Jr. and an “up and coming” singer, Sara Niemietz. He’s getting a lot of support from his good friend, Frankie Valli, and several of that entertainer’s longtime musicians. Valli’s story is now the subject of the popular stage show, “Jersey Boys.” Mike, who has seen it three times, says, “It has given Frankie another life.”

As any independent TV or film producer will acknowledge, finding financial backing, not talent, is often a problem, and that’s one that concerns Mike as well. But, don’t write Mike Huddlestun off. He’s been in the right place at the right time before and made the most of it. He has the right stuff to do it again.

Corinne Abatt

Bruce recalls the group from Northbrook that used to go to Westminister Presbyterian Church to prepare meals for all hungry comers. Kathy Bauhof, who was in charge of that monthly event, planned and ordered the supplies for each meal, and a group of volunteers did the cooking, set the tables, served and cleaned up. Bruce, who like his wife, took on any and all responsibilities including scrubbing pots and pans said, “I enjoyed that a lot.” That makes perfect sense since both of them like to cook. Judie says, “He’s a great cook, a “Bon Appetit” and “Gourmet” type cook.“ Both entered their special chili in Northbrook’s Chili Cookoff three times. Judie said, “I won it once with white chili.”

Away from the kitchen, their recipe for fun is golf. Judie says, “Bruce got me involved in golf, and I love it.” He says quietly, “And now, she usually beats me.” Maybe he didn’t realize when he put a golf club in her hand that Judie, a highly proficient high school and college gymnast (CMU) would have coordination and timing that would give her a substantial edge. Their idea of a great week’s vacation is to play 36 holes of golf every day on courses around their up-north retreat on Walloon Lake near Petosky.

As an Elder, Judie brings a wealth of business experience to that position. She started her career as a junior high teacher in Washington, D.C., then worked in the U.S. Senate with people coming to testify at hearings on small business. Later, she held management level positions in the contract help and wine importing businesses.

Bruce, a pure hometown product, graduated from Groves High School, attended Northwood University, Midland, had a carpet cleaning business in Denver, Co., and currently sells printed material to the automotive industry. He’s an avid reader and likes to do jigsaw puzzles. Judy does her puzzles with yarn. She loves to knit.

Their son, Todd, and his wife, Rachael and children, MacKenzie, 5, and Keagen,3, live in Arlington, Virginia. Corinne Abatt

Meet Bruce and Judie Murdock

Bruce and Judie Murdock each started life in different denominations of the Christian faith. Fortunately, they have made Northbrook their church home. They are proud of the many friends they have here, and they participate in many ways.

Judie, who grew up in Holland, MI, says, “Bruce and I were married in this church 23 years ago by The Rev. Michael Dunkelberger.” She previously served a three-year term as a Deacon and last January took the oath as Elder.

Bruce recalls the time when former Northbrook pastor, The Rev. Dr. Michael “Mick” Burns, paid a home call. “He came in a sweat shirt and a pair of jeans. He got us to start coming again.” They have been attending regularly ever since.

On Monday, July 15, a focus-sponsored group will tour the magnificently landscaped grounds and gardens of the Russian Orthodox Monastery of St. Sabbas, 18745 Old Homestead, Harper Woods. This mini stacation to a world of rare beauty includes a tea/luncheon in the monastery’s elegant Royal Eagle Restaurant and a tour of the church,

considered a marvel of authentic antiquity. Specific details will follow in the weeks ahead.

Thank You Too Much!

Our wonderful group of faithful knitters has exceeded our expectations, and, in less than 10 months, the group has produced and presented over 40 prayer shawls to some wonderful people who will hopefully enjoy the warmth of the shawls and the comfort of knowing that others are thinking of them in prayer through health challenges and difficult times. Our fun group of Knit Wits continues to grow, and we are considering the creation of another opportunity to gather if there is enough interest.

Several people have asked about a daytime group, and we will be happy to provide an opportunity if we can accommodate those who are interested. Anyone who may be interested in a daytime knitting group contact me at church or by phone and let me know the days and times you would be available. Contact Mary at 248.546.7428.

We are happy to teach knitting to those who need instruction and happy to help in whatever way we can with individual projects. The prayer shawl ministry is strictly voluntary, and many knitters are working on their own projects most of the time. Knitting is great therapy, and we have lots of laughs and have developed great friendships along the way. God works in mysterious ways!

Northbrook’s Rose

Welcome June. June gives us gifts of flowers in bloom. It is time for strawberries and cream. School is over for another year, and we laud our graduates. There will be brides walking down aisles. There is joy in the air. Our minds look forward to planned vacations and family gatherings.

It seems our smiles are ever ready and our laughter more genuine.

"I wonder what it would be like to live in a world when it was always JUNE" said by L.M. Montgomery.

Welcome July. It will surely be warm. Perhaps hot. So take time to find a shady nook or cool air. Sit down with a good book and a cold drink. Take time to do this. I decided this month should be a time for the pursuit of happiness which will bring harmony to our heads and hearts. See you in church. Blessings from my house to your house, Rose

School is out for summer!!! We have some openings for

the fall session so be sure to tell your friends

and neighbors. Check us out on Facebook and remember to like us!

5:30 PM in the Library

Laughing, caring, sharing and fellowship are just some of the things that go on twice a month at our Souper Senior Supper. Does this sound like something you would like to do? If so, give us a try.

We serve a great bowl of homemade soup, bread, salad and yummy dessert and, of course, lively conversation. No reservations required.

We sincerely thank our wonderful Northbrook family for your cards, phone calls, visits and mostly your prayers during these last six months. We feel blessed to have you all in our lives.

Gratefully, Bill and Edna Gatsby
