Our work inthe secondphase of this competitionisbased onthe
confirmationof ourprincipal strategiesfor theoverall urbansetting of
thenew NobelCentreas a free-standingsolitairesitting nextto anew
publicgarden, theplacement of theauditoriumon thetop floor,as the
highest, most visibleand recognisablefeature of thenew institution,
anda wellbalanced overallarchitecturalappearance expressingdignity
andcivic identity reflecting thevirtues of theNobel Institution. After
contemplatingthefeedbackandchangesmadetotheprogramme
as wellas our personalexperience of theNobelPrize ceremony in
December2013, thefollowingthemes becamekey subjects forus for
further investigation:Building Volume;UrbanSetting; Garden;Open
GroundFloor;Internal Organisation;Auditorium;Formand Expression.
Building Volume Nobelhuset
Theplacement of the new building as a solitaireremainsfundamental
toour urban andarchitectural considerations, reflecting thenotion of a
house as a civicbuilding. Thereductionof the programmeby15% as well
as our considerationto locate museumprogrammealsoon basement floors
givesus theopportunityto substantiallyreduce thevolumeby6 m in height,
5 min length and 3.5 min width. In thisway thecharacter of thebuilding as
ahouse isstrengthened, tying in moreharmoniouslywith itsurban context
whilst maintaining itsstatus as a solitaireon Blasieholmen alongwith the
NationalMuseum.
Urban Setting
Themodification tothe positioning of thebuilding isrelated toa number of
factors: the refinementof thegarden topography, theclarification of the
location of theentrances in relation tothe open ground floor as well as the
enhancement of the quality of theurban spacealong Hovslagargatan. We
proposetoplace thebuilding at aslight angletowards thenorthern building
block on Hovslagargatanopening thespace of the street towardsthe water.
In thisway it not onlystrengthens itsstatus as a solitaire, but allows usto
create aninviting front of houseareaat thecorner of Hovslagargatanand
Nybrokajen, which will be designatedfor agenerousentrance and drop off
zonenext to themain water front entrance. Thisis madepossiblethrough
ourrecommendation toreduce thelength of theramp leading tothe
underground carpark based on the reorganisation of deliveryaccess.
Garden Nobel GardenInrelation to our considerationsregarding thepositioning of thebuilding
wehave alsorefined therelationship between thetopographyof the
garden, thehouseand the quayline. Wesuggest aligning the ground level
of thehousewith the existing ground level of thegarden onemetre
abovethe quayline. In thiswaythe housesitsin thegarden and already
introducesanotion of nature even on itsmore urban, north-eastern side.
In addition wepropose tosoften thegarden edgetowards thequayline by
introducing a gradualand undulating tiering of thetopographyfollowing
amore natural flow of forms, integrating thelandscapeapproach of the
existing museumpark. Anatural stonewith integrateds tairsdefinesthe
main stepping lines, whiletheground surfacesin the parkalter between
gravelled stoneand water boundporoussurfaces. Wefurthermorepropose
tolay anatural stone surfacearound theentirebuilding, which alsoflows
insidethebuilding and becomesthemain surfacematerial for all public
areas. In thiswaythe spatialrelationship between insideand outsideis
subtlystrengthened, supporting theideaof avery open and publicground
floorand smooth transition between insideand outside.Theplanting of
trees will follow therandomsystem of themuseumpark with additional
HorseChestnut and Mapletrees alsoon the north-eastern sideof the new
building.

Form and Expression Faade
Through subtleset-backswithin the volumethebuilding maintainsthe
dispositionof abase, middleand a top sectionand as such relatesthe
building tothe typologyof manyinnercity civicbuildings. Thefaade
coversthevolumeon allsides as a homogenous layerand unifiesthe
building complex. Theverticalswithin each volumetricunitare emphasized,
whereasthehorizontality of floor slabsis subordinate. Weproposethe
faadeas a single-layer,post-beammetal construction with an external
sun protection systemon thesouthern side. Whilethefillingsare either
glassfor transparency ornatural stoneon glasspanes foropaquenessor
solidity,we proposetheexternal finsin brassor galvanisedsteel. In thisway
depending on thetimeof the dayand theactivitiestalking placeinside
thebuilding createsboth a sense of dynamiclight-and opennessas well as
afeeling of calm grounded-and solidness, mirroring thetradition as wellas
the ambition of the new institution.

Open Ground Floor
Ourideaf orreorganizing thebuilding allows ustoproposea veryopen and
freelyaccessiblepublicground floor. Apart fromfour main cores, whichwe
haverelocated intothe fourcorners of thebuilding, theentire ground floor
areais free forpublicactivities, such as infodesk, caf, shop, education
and flexibleexhibition area. Theseactivitiesare madevisiblethroughlarge
entrances, windows and agarden loggiat owardsthesouthern side, allowing
direct visual and physical transitionsbetween insideand out. A central
sculptural spiral stair, in closeproximitytoan additionalstair andelevators,
introducesroutesup and down, providing easyaccessto thediverse
functionswithin thebuilding. In thisway theground floor adoptsavery
activerole, introducing theactivitiesinsideas well as letting themspill over
intothe publicrealm.
Threelargeentrances towardsthe eastern, southern andwestern side
support thisconcept of publicoutreach and interaction, creating agenerousstreet-likespacein the centreof thebuilding. Whilemaintaining
the waterfront entrance as one of the main entrances, especiallyfor the
annual ceremonyon 10th December,we areproposinganequallyimportant
entrance on thewestern side, which will receivemainlypedestrianvisitors
coming fromtheNationalMuseum and theunderground stationnext to
Kungstrdgrden. In addition wesuggest opening up the garden sidewith a
publicgarden loggia, stretching the entirelength of the southern elevation.
Thisnot onlyprovidesaninviting atmospheretowardstheNobel Garden,
but alsobringsthegarden insidethe building, making ita vitalpart of the
new institution. Theopen ground floorand the new garden both create a
new publicdestinationforthe everydaylifeof thecitizensof Stockholmand
visitorsalike.

Internal Organisation Circulation and Nobel Path
Everyorganisationalideawe proposeisalways influencedbyour undisputed
decision in thefirst phase of thecompetitionto placethe auditoriumon
thetop floor. Under thepremises of reducing the building volumeas well
as establishing greater efficiency and orientationbetween the various
activities,we proposeacirculationthat maintainstheidea of thevertical
route as a publicpath, guidedbythe activities of themuseumleading tothe
auditoriumon theuppermost floor. In order toaccomplish thiswe proposeto
split themuseuminto three sections; temporaryexhibition on thefirstand
second floors; permanent exhibition on thefirst basement floorand open
exhibition spacesdistributed throughout thepublicareason all floorsalways
in connection with thevertical circulation. In thisway theopen exhibition
functionslike a Nobel Path connecting all functionsand floors and making
themall part of theNobel Communityand as such reflectswhat this
building isabout, aplace tomeet, gather, dine, celebrate, work, study, learn,
see, enjoyand find inspiration.
Although thegrandspiral stair on theground floor connectsthemajor public
functions such as caf, education, shop, temporaryexhibition, parts of the
permanent exhibition, conference and someoffices on ground, first and
firstbasement floorswith a strong symbolicgesture, it primarilyrepresents
theinviting but alsodynamicand representationalcharacter of thenew
institution. Thisgrand stairis supported by a second main stair connecting
all floorsand sitting at the right hand sideof themain waterfront entrance in
direct spatialrelationship toa largegroup of elevators. Together theyform
thebasis of a clearand comprehensiblevertical circulationsystem, which
connectsall diverseactivities. Following theideathat parts of themuseum
can becomean open exhibition and bespread throughout theentire building,
thedistribution of all other functions support thedynamiccharacter for the
new Nobel House. Theoverall corelayout not onlyprovidesa maximum
of flexibilityfor fenestration but alsostructuresthebuilding intotwoouter
zonesand oneinnerzone, through which thepublicpath oscillates.

Auditorium Nobelsalen
Following the privilege of experiencing the Nobel PrizeCeremonyin
December 2013 manyof our considerationsand thoughtsabout therole
of the ceremonial spacewhereconfirmed, in particular ourperception of
arespectful and professionalyetat thesame timeintimateand personal
atmosphere. Although theStockholm Concert Hall was not purpose-built for
theNobel PrizeCeremonyit establishesa beautifuland strong atmospheric
setting for one of the finest exchanges of humangratitudein the world. This
experience influencedour approach for theadvancement of our design for
thisspecialspace. In light of thediscussion about flexibilitywe established
thecriteriathat theauditoriumfirstand foremost hasto performat itsbest
for theNobel PrizeCeremony. Thereforeany other use of the auditorium
will always follow thespatialrules and atmosphereestablished by the
Nobel Night. Wewere confirmedin our belief that it will bethe unique
character of thisauditorium, which will make it a desirablespace rather
thana neutral, multipurpose and predominantlyflexiblespacewithoutcharacter. In addition tothese considerationswe observedthat thepeople
flow at theNobel PrizeCeremonydoes not necessarilyrequirea largefoyer
spacein front of theauditoriumitself, as most peoplearrive, organise their
coatson the ground floorand take up seatsin a relativelyshort timeand
afterwardsleavethe building quickly toreach the cityhall in timefor the
Nobel Banquet.
Based on thesecontemplationswe proposeavery compact horseshoe
typeauditoriumwith aslopedflexibleparquet flooranda lowerand upper
galleryring. Thecurvedseating linesand thestage, which almost actslike
aproscenium, together establisha veryintimateatmosphereenhancing a
closerelationship between theaudience and thestage. Wepropose toenter
theauditoriumaxiallyfrom the watersidewherea group of sixelevators
allow for fluent visitor flow, supported by thestaircase vis--vis,directly
connecting theauditoriumwith the ground floor. Whilewe maintain afoyer
spacein front of the auditoriumoverlooking thequay of Strandvgen, the
entireauditoriumitself becomesa grand spacewith largepanoramic
windows on either sideof the audience allowing formaximumdaylight as
wellas dramaticviews over thecity. In thisway Nobelsalenestablishes
apublicpresence in thecity, crowning thebuilding notmerelyby
architectural form but by the experience of human interaction.
According to theuser requirementsweprovideflexibilityby establishing a
sequential rather thana paralleluse of theauditorium. Thisis possibleby
integrating aflexiblefloor systemfor the parquetandlowergallerylevel.
For theNobel Night theauditoriumaccommodates 1400 seatsincluding
aflexiblerow of chairsat theouter ring of both galleries. Theauditorium
can alsoaccommodate 800- 900 seatsby excluding theuppergalleryvia
acurtain that dropsfrom the ceiling following thecircularform of the
parquetspace. Thiscurtain can further bedropped toparquet level sothat
the 400-500 seatsavailableon parquet floor providea suitableatmospherefora medium sizeevent. In addition theflexibleparquetandlower gallery
floor can belifted tothe finishedfloor level of themain foyerspaceand
provideaneven floor surfacefor theentire fourth floor. In thisconditionthe
auditoriumcan beused as a largeor small banquet hall depending on the
position of theparquet curtain. In all constellationsthereis sufficient foyer,
mingling and break outspace.
