University Health Centre (03-89248089)Minor health problems can be dealt with bythe University Health Center located on thefirst floor of the Student Association Building(Yellow Façade). It is open from 8:30am to4:30pm, Monday to Friday and 8:30am to12:00pm on Saturdays. A fee will be chargedforconsultation.TheHealthCentreisalsoabletodispensemedicineandarrangeforlaboratorytestsifrequired;bothofwhichwillbechargedatcost.

24-hour Clinic – “Klinik Mewah” (03-87235229)Klinik Mewah is located at Jalan Semenyih,Semenyih Town. It is open 24 hours. If youencounter minor health problems during thehealth center off hours, you may visit KlinikMewah. For International Students who haveyet to complete your medical check up, youare advised to undergo a health examinationinKlinikMewah.YouwillbechargednotmorethanRM200foracompletecheckup.

Why open a bank account?- To avoid carrying cash with you or keeping

What do I need in order to open a bank account?- Letter of Opening a Bank Account issued

by the International Office to confirm yourstatusasastudentinMalaysia.

- OriginalPassport.- Minimum deposit. Must be in Ringgit

Malaysia(RM)aroundRM250–RM300.- IndemnityForm. (If youareunder18years

PASSPORT&VISAS

MostofyouhaveenteredMalaysiaforthesolepurposeofeducationandyouwillbegrantedastudentvisa/studentpassforayear(orpartofayear),dependingonthecountrywhichissuesthepassport.You are personally responsible for the timely submission of the documents for renewal of your student pass.

You must submit your passport and other documents to the student Visa Office one (1) month before the expiry date ofyourstudentpass.

There will be a separate charge for theextensionofthestudentpassandmultipleentryvisas. Students will bear the extra charges orcompoundforlatesubmissionofdocuments.

COSTOFLIVING

ThecostoflivinginSemenyihislowcomparedtomostcitiesinMalaysia.WhilstyouareattheUniversity, your spending patterns may varyfromwhattheyhavebeenuptonow.Itcanbedifficulttoworkouthowmuchyouarelikelytospendasastudent.

Belowisabriefestimateofsomeofthemainexpenses.Youwill,however, thinkaboutyourownspendingstyleinordertomakeanaccuratebudgetestimate.

University AccommodationRM330 - RM600 per month. Rent variesdependingonroomtypeandfacilities.Electricity and water bills are included exceptforair-conditionedrooms.

Private AccommodationRM250 - RM500 per month. A rent variesdepending on the area and the distance fromthe university. This estimate does not includefacilities,electricityandwaterbills.

FoodRM400 - RM500 per month. The amountdepends on how expensive your tastes are.Dininginthecafeteriaorfoodcourt,eachmealwillcostyounotmorethanRM10.

TheImmigrationEnforcementofficersconductrandomchecksatpublicplaces. If youdonothaveanydocumentsonyou,youmaygetintotrouble.

Ifyoudecidenottocarryyouroriginalpassportbefore you obtain a “green card”, make sureyoucarryacertifiedtruecopyofyourpassportand your University of Nottingham student IDCard.

Loss of Passport - Lodgeapolicereportwithin24hoursofthe

incident.- Youwillneedtosubmitacopyofthepolice

reporttoyourhomecountry’sembassy.- Notify the Student Visa Office to transfer

endorsement of the Student Pass to yournewpassportat theMalaysian ImmigrationDepartment.

MALAYSIANCULTURE

Malaysiaisacountrywithamixtureofculturesbasedarounditsmainethnicgroups.Thereare3mainraces,theMalay,ChineseandIndian,alongwiththeethnictraditionsofthenative(OrangAsli)andtribesinEastMalaysia.TheseculturaltraditionsarefurtherenhancedbytheinfluenceoftheBritish,Dutch,PortugueseandThais.

Addressing a personMalay men and women can be addressed by their firstname.Forinstance,AmirBinYusofshouldbeaddressedasMr.AmirbutnotMr.Yusof,asthelatterishisfather’sname. The term ‘Bin’ means ‘son of’ and ‘Binti’ means‘daughter of’. Sometimes names are preceded by theterms‘Encik,PuanorCik’.Thesearethemalaytermsfor‘Mr,MrsandMiss’respectively.

The Chinese have surnames which precede their givenname,Forinstance,aladywhosenameisTanWenLicanbe addressed as Miss Tan. Some Chinese have Englishnames, such as James Wong. It would be proper toaddresshimasMr.Wong.

Indians can be addressed with their given names. Forinstance, Anand a/l Chandran should be addressed asMr. Anand. The abbreviation ‘a/l’ stands for ‘anak lelaki’meaning ‘son of’ and ‘a/p’ means ‘anak perempuan’ or‘daughterof’.

TitlesAnumberofMalaysianshavebeenconferredtitlesbytheMalaysianGovernment.Among these titlesareTun,TanSri,DatoandDatuk.It isappropriatetoaddressthembytheirtitles.PoliticaldignitariesareconferredtitlessuchasYangBerhormat(YB)andYangAmatBerhormat(YAB).ThetermofMrorEncikwillnotbenecessarywhenaddressingapersonwhohasbeenconferredatitle.

GesturesThe right hand is always used when eating with one’sfingers or when giving and receiving objects. The rightfore finger is not used for pointing at places, objects orpersons.Thethumboftherighthandwiththefourfingersfoldedunderisthepreferredusage.

ConductPublic behaviour is especially important in MalaysianCulture.MostMalaysiansrefrainfromdisplayingaffection(i.e.embracingorkissing)inpublic.AsavisitortoMalaysiaitwouldbeappropriateforyoutodothesame.

TippingMosthotelsandrestaurantsincludea10%servicechargeand5%governmenttaxonbills.TippingisnotcustomaryinMalaysiabutifyouwishtoshowyourappreciationongoodservice,asmalltipwillbewelcomed.

AsavisitortoMalaysia,youwilldiscoverawiderangeofcustomsandpractices,someofwhichmaybedifferentfromwhatispractisedinyourowncountry.BelowareafewcustomscommonlypractisedinMalaysia:

IntroductionsIn Malaysia, introductions are normally acknowledged with a handshake. Deepavali/ DiwaliCelebrated by Hindus as the day the evilNarakasurawasslainbyLordKrishna.Signifyingthe triumph of light over darkness and goodover evil. Deepavali is also known as Diwali,or theFestivalofLights.Light issignificant inHinduism because it signifies goodness. So,during the Festival of Lights, ‘deeps’, or oillamps,areburnedthroughoutthedayandintothenighttowardoffdarknessandevil.

DISABILITYSUPPORT

The campus at Semenyih has been designedwith students with disabilities in mind. Thedisabilityserviceisabletoadvisestudentswhohave physical disabilities, dyslexia, long-termmedicalconditions,etc.

EMERGENCY/SECURITYSERVICES

Your security is of paramount importance tothe University and consequently there aresecurity guards stationed around the campusandpatrollingona24-hourbasis.Accesstothecampus is only through the manned securitygatesandallvisitorswillhavetoregisterwiththe security guards at the gate. The securityguards have the authority to ask to see yourStudentIDcardatanytimeandyoumustgetintothehabitofhavingitwithyouatalltimeswhenoncampus.

Themainsecurityoffice is locatedonthefirstfloor of the Administration Building and ismanned 24-hours per day. Additional securityguards are stationed around campus and willbe present at the entrance to most buildings,especiallytheHallsofResidences,theStudentAssociationBuildingandtheComputerCentre,24hoursperdayaswellastheGuardHouseatthemaingate.

STUDENTREGISTRYOFFICE

The Student Registry Office’s main role is toregulate and assist the students with registryrelated matters. This office has an overallfunctionof looking into administrativemattersthatconcernstudents.Thefunctionsmayvaryfrom issuing confirmation letters, processingwithdrawal and suspension applications,producing official transcripts and certificatesas well as maintaining the student recordsdatabase. The Student Registry Office is alsomade up of various other departments listedbelow:

Timetabling Office:Thetimetablingofficeinchargeoftheteachingtimetables for all the courses offered at theUniversity.MostoftheteachingsareconductedoncampuswiththeexceptionofsomeoftheMBA(part-time),Educationandi-WHOmoduleswhicharetaughtatourKualaLumpurTeachingCenter(KLTC).

InformationregardingtheoperationoftheStudentAssociationwill beprovidedby theStudentAssociationCommittee. ThepurposeofTheStudentAssociation(SA)istohelpandimprovestudent’slifebyprovidingbetterqualityservices,representationanddevelopmentforallstudents.

Examinations Office:TheexamsofficehasthetaskoforganisingandadministeringallwrittenexamsforthecoursesofferedbytheUniversity.

The semester exams will be in January andMayofeveryyearwhereasthereassessmentand block module exams will take place inAugust/September. Internationalstudentsmaybe allowed to take their reassessmentexamsin their homecountryonlyduring theAugust/September exam period. This must be at acenter approved by the University and is notapplicabletoFoundationstudents.

Graduation Office:The graduation office will organise yourgraduationceremonyafteryouhavesuccessfullyfinishedyourstudieswiththeUniversity.
