How was „research“ defined?
Purpose of the inventory:
To catalogue the collected HIV/AIDS related research studies
With the concrete objective:
To aggregate all published knowledge on the HIV/AIDS epidemic and its response
On-going research therefore excluded
Research was understood as: A systematic investigation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge (University of Virginia, University of Pennsylvania)

How were the publications gathered?
1. Database queries:Pubmed database, for journal articles (Keywords: HIV AND Cambodia) Social Science Citation Index (Keywords: HIV AND Cambodia) Medscape database, for conference papers (Keyword: Cambodia)
2. Handsearch, using the snowball method: Interviewed organizations, who referred me to others, and so on…
Method‘s advantage: Allows to identify the Cambodian HIV/AIDS research community
Method‘s disadvantage: Excludes organizations outside the community

sWhat research design was used?
Nina Ingenkamp NCHADS Workshop 28.03.2007 WHO Cambodia HIV/AIDS Research Agenda Sunway Hotel
1. Awareness
Organizations not only passively, but actively aware of the importance of research
2. Abundance
At least 250 research studies from more than 30 different organizations
3. Diversity
Each organization looks at HIV from a different angle, ensuring a holistic response
What are the strengths of the HIV/AIDS research community?
Nina Ingenkamp NCHADS Workshop 28.03.2007 WHO Cambodia HIV/AIDS Research Agenda Sunway Hotel
1. Neglected knowledge management- Of 103 reports, 18 are lost (17% of all reports)
- Organizations themselves not aware of all their publications
Recommendation: Organizations to keep a complete list of all
publications together with reference copies
2. No coordinative structure in place
- Abundance of organizations carrying out research
- Some well-linked, others not at all
Recommendation: To establish some type of forum where all
organizations can come together
What are the gaps of the HIV/AIDS research community?
