General Principles
Training Grants (Ts)
NRSA- National Research Service Award Legislated, program began in 1974 (P.L. 93-348) Multi-slot awards Domestic institutions only Fund training programs for pre- and postdocs in any
scientific area within our scientific mission Can be basic or clinical Trainees work in a mentor’s lab MDs, PhDs, DVMs Awards go the best training programs in the Nation
Fellowships (Fs):
NRSA- National Research Service Award Legislated, program began in 1974 (P.L. 93-348) Individual awards under a mentor Training can be at domestic or foreign institutions Fund pre- and postdoc trainees in any scientific area
within our scientific mission Can be basic or clinical- most are basic Most awardees are for Ph.D.s
Career Development Awards (Ks) Individual awards Mostly for MDs More senior award than a fellowship Some mentored others not Newer ones (K22 and K99/R00) are transition
awards- for MDs and PhDs
Mechanisms
Training Grants Some all predoc/some all postdoc Most are a mixture of slots Funds are mostly for tuition and trainees Training Related Expenses may be used to defray costs such as staff
salaries, equipment, research supplies, and other expenses directly related to the training program
Costs: Tuition- 60% of requested tuition, capped at $16,000 ($21K for MD-
PhD programs) Stipends- $20,772 pre/ postdoc $36,996 (level 0)-$51,036 (level 7) Training Related Expenses- $4,200 pre/$7,850 (post); both include
health insurance Travel- $400-$1000 F&As- 8%
F31s- Ruth Kirschstein NRSA Awards for Individual Predoc Fellowships to Promote Diversity in Health-related Research
Predoc fellowship for minorities and students with disabilities Individual awards Cannot change the scope, move fellowship, or change mentor
without prior NIH approval Tuition- 60% of requested tuition, capped at $16,000 ($21K
for MD-PhD programs) Stipends- $20,772 pre Training Related Expenses- $4,200 includes health insurance Travel- $400-$1000 F&As- 8%

off on a sabbatical For MDs or PhDs Few applicants- too little money Stipend = $51,036 Training Related Expenses- $7,850; includes health
insurance Travel- $400-$1,000
K01Mentored Research Scientist Development Award Used in different ways by ICs MDs or PhDs 3-5 years Salary: $75,000/ yr + FBs Research Support: $20,000/yr F&As= 8%
K02Independent Scientist Award Best candidate is a “senior” assistant professor or
“junior” associate professor Close to or just got promoted and tenured Must have independent grant support Best award to have: R01 MDs (very few) and PhDs Salary support only $75,000/yr + FBs for 5 years Gives up salary support from all other NIH grants! Relatively few applicants F&As= 8%
K08- Mentored Clinical Scientist Development AwardK23- Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award K08- for basic research project K23- for clinical/ patient-oriented project K08- 3 or 5 yr award
3 yrs for more senior individual 5 yrs for more junior individual, but must justify a “didactic”
2 yr phase Salary: $75,000 + FBs/ yr Research Support:
K08- $20,000/yr K23- $25,000/yr
F&As= 8%
K24Mid-Career Investigator Award in Patient-Oriented Research
Purpose: to provide support for clinician investigators to allow them protected time to devote to patient-oriented research (POR) and to act as research mentors primarily for junior clinicians
3-5 years MDs Salary- 25-50% at institutional rate (maximum
Congressionally-mandated level) + FBs Research Development Support- $50,000 F&As= 8%
K25Mentored Quantitative Research Development Award For individuals from a quantitative background who
want to apply their expertise to a biomedical problem
For engineering, mathematics, computer science- NOT individuals who are already working in a biomedical or epidemiological area
3-5 years Salary: $75,000 + FBs Research Support: $20,000 F&As= 8%
K22 Research Scholar Development Award Transition award for postdocs moving to positions of assistant
professor Two-phased application Phase 1
