Why Nicotine in Cigarettes Can Relieve Anxiety in Smokers ScienceDaily (Nov. 8, 2012)Gary Torres
Cigarettes have become something normal in our society, and smokers
even more. However, since a few years ago, some private companies and
governments are trying to reduce the amount of people who smoke, either
showing shocking pictures on the packs of cigarettes as showing publicity on
TV or on the streets. Nowadays we can notice the extreme regulations that
governments have created in order make people stop smoking and also for
respecting people who don’t smoke. Regulations such as smokers and non-
smokers zones in restaurants, or the no smoking rule in public areas are quite
a big deal for addicted people who like to smoke everyday. But are these
entities really concerned on how to make people quit smoking?
Most people experience a relaxing or euphoric feeling when smoking.
This feeling, however, lasts for a very short time and is often followed by
increased heart rate and restlessness. This is when compulsive smokers would
light up another one. It's how the addiction gets started.
Scientists have found that low doses of nicotine in our organism can be
the path for new therapies which stop the feeling of anxiety when a smoker
quits smoking. Nicotine acts like a key that unlocks nicotine receptors in the
brain. Usually that key opens the receptor, but at other times nicotine is like a
key that has gotten broken inside of the lock.
I think this is a very good way of using the same element which causes
death as an element which saves lives, considering all the sort of effects that a
person would have after treatment, because in my opinion, the publicity and the
shocking pictures haven’t been as effective as they were expected to be. New
kinds of therapies are needed and I’m sure scientists are going to continue to
seek new solutions not only for the problems that we are facing nowadays, but
also for the issues that we are going to confront in the future.
