Which is your favourite?

2012 is the National Year of Reading and we’re looking for eight books, one for each state and territory, which together describe the Australian experience.

The shortlist of six books for SA is available at the Prospect Library, or go online to www.abc.net.au/yearofreading and vote for the book which you think should represent SA.

Find out more about the National Year of Reading and all the things that are happening around the country by visiting the website www.love2read.org.au.

New Library BOOK GROUP starting soon

The library has a very friendly and welcoming book group that meets at the library on the third Tuesday evening of each month. To cater for those who prefer a daytime meeting time a new group will start in the new year.

Ask at the library desk for further information on either group.

The groups are a great way to discover new authors, share a love of books, and make new friends!

LETTER FROM ANNE

Dear Readers The days are getting longer and a bit warmer thankfully! Since the last newsletter we have had some great events especially the Book Sale and the Poetry Slam. The Book Sale raised an amazing $5610 which is $80 more than last year, so well done to all who worked hard setting up and working on the day. A big thank you also goes to all those generous folk who donated their wonderful books as well! The Poetry Slam was a roaring success literally. There was a record number of registrations (26) and a big crowd to listen to 20 creative poets perform their original pieces. The musical drumming accompaniment by African Soul really excited the crowd and set the scene for a most enjoyable evening. Prospect Toy Library, which is now housed in the Thomas Street Centre with us, celebrated its 30th Birthday last week. The Toy Library has traditionally been staffed by volunteers so it is a major achievement, and a tribute to those volunteers, that it has continued for such a long time. Their efforts have been enjoyed by countless numbers of children in Prospect during that time. Please mark the Friend’s Annual General Meeting on Thursday 24 November in your calendar to come if you can. We start with drinks and nibbles at 6pm with the meeting commencing at 6.30pm. Jon Bentick, Publicity and Promotions Officer with the Public Library Services, will be guest speaker and he will talk about 2012 National Year of Reading and what it means for South Australia. The main business of the meeting will follow and is usually finalised quickly to allow time for those present to socialise afterwards. So if you would like to know more about the National Year of Reading and the Friends of Prospect Library I warmly invite you to attend. When you next visit the library you will see the Christmas raffles – there is an adult raffle with 5 prizes and a children/youth raffle with 3 prizes. As well as all the wonderful items on display there are over a thousand dollars’ worth of vouchers donated by local businesses. Make sure you get a ticket (or more) so

that you are in the running to win! The raffles have been organised by long term Friends member Jenni Cotton so a big thank you to Jenni and to all the very generous businesses. As Christmas is approaching you’ll see we have the Ticklish Allsorts bringing their Christmas show and a Christmas craft activity promoted elsewhere in the newsletter. Be sure to book for both of these sessions to secure a place. You should also note our Christmas opening hours so that you stock up on enough materials to last you through to the New Year. As this is the last newsletter for the year I thank you for your patronage over 2011 and wish you every happiness for the Festive season. Bob Hope said “When we recall Christmas past, we usually find that the simplest things -- not the great occasions -- give off the greatest glow of happiness.” I hope yours is happy. Happy reading. Anne

The library has become something of a poetry haven in recent times - first poetry readings, and at the end of

September the library hosted one of the (very lively and noisy!) finals for

the nationwide Poetry Slam.

Our own Helen Warmingham was one of the poets who participated, and

another of her thoughtful and beautiful poems is included here for

your pleasure.

SUN ROOM

by Helen Warmingham

I sit here in my sun room

letting go of all cares and worries leaving behind tasks waiting, needing to be done

soft light filters in winter sun warms the room

quietness stills me warmth fills my body

a cup of coffee in my hand a good book

time to relax and just be

There is a sun room deep within me a place of stillness and quiet

peace infuses the room soft light of gentleness enfolds me

well-being warms me through thoughts nurture and uphold me

I’m refreshed, nourished and held in love

Some of the crowd enjoying the evening

Fantastic entertainment provided by ‘African Soul’

Prospect

by Zachariah, Year 5, Nailsworth Primary

In the parks of Prospect on hot 30 degree days in the months of summer, the barbie is always sizzling and families and friends sit talking to each other. Eskies are sitting in corners keeping everything cool.

Kids are grabbing ice and shoving chunks down each other’s backs and yelling frost. Fun is everywhere. Kids are playing on swings and kicking the footie. Let me tell you we Prospecters love BBQs and fun!

Prospecters also have the best library around. It’s called Prospect Library and it’s next to the best school ever and that’s Nailsworth Primary school.

So if you come to Prospect make sure you have lots of fun and oh make sure you return your library books or the librarian will haunt you.

Prospect

by Luan, Year 2, Rosary School

I like Prospect because it is a place where you meet new people every day, you meet friends, you learn a lot (at school), you can be active (walk). My favourite thing about Prospect is the parks and most of all the imagination you can get from it. That’s what I like about Prospect. I’ll give it ten out of ten.

The Dogs of the way to Nailsworth

Primary School

by Josiah, Year 1, Nailsworth Primary

Charlie Brown and Muffin are the first ones we meet. Then we come upon Candy. If we are quick we see Treasure. She is a little bit shy. Max comes next. He is not at all nice. Dexter and Dro are next in queue. They are very friendly. Next we come upon Simon. We all like him because he is so cute. Billy is the last one we see.

There was a great response to the Library’s first Children’s Writing Competition, and a great turn out to the prize giving ceremony on 18 August. The Friends were

delighted to sponsor the children’s prizes, and have agreed to do so again next year.

We thought you might enjoy reading some of this year’s entries.

Behind the front desk …

A warm welcome to new Friends’ members - Carol Attenborough and Greg Pillar. We look forward to seeing you at future Friends’ activities.

Congratulations to our Friends’ treasurer and great library supporter, Brian, on becoming a JP!

Lots of great prizes, as always, in the annual Christmas raffle. It’s a great opportunity to support the library through the funds raised, and to get the chance to win some great prizes just in time for the holidays. Buy your tickets at the front desk next time you are in the library!

Our secretary, Margaret, attended the annual FOLA meeting and advises that the new patron for our national organization is Thomas Keneally.

A big thanks to our Writers Speak crime writers who provided a most enjoyable and informative evening at the library.

Joann is away on holidays but will be back before the end of the year. Anne is looking refreshed after her great trip to North America.

Very sad to see Dymocks at North Park close. Annie Stevens and Dymocks have been wonderful library supporters and we are delighted that Annie is continuing her support for and membership of the Friends.

After around five years from getting it started till now, I think it’s time to permanently hand over responsibility for this newsletter to another Friends’ member. Media savvy Andy Lyle has kindly agreed to take it on in the new year—so a warm welcome to Andy, who I am sure will add some new ideas and extra sparkle to Books Etc.

Best wishes to all for Christmas and the holiday season!

Do you know someone who has a problem that prevents them from reading?

Three DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System) players, designed to play audio books, magazines and even newspapers, have been made available to Prospect Library for use by members of our community.

These players have been specially designed for people with vision problems, or people who are unable to hold or turn the pages of a book, or someone with dyslexia.

These devices have large talking buttons and memory facilities that are not available on standard CD players.

The DAISY players can be used to play the audio-book CD’s, including MP3 versions or audio files stored on USB sticks or SD cards.

The devices will also enable people to take advantage of new digital materials available from Prospect Library and some people will also qualify to access Vision Australia's collection of almost 20,000 DAISY audio books as well.

To try out the new DAISY player please visit or phone Prospect Library 8344 5454
