Student Blog I wish to explicitly mention that I am not condemning or
glorifying any religious faith. We all have our own thoughts
for the origins of the world as that is a part of our rights as
human beings. Since I’ve began attending Highcrest, I’ve
sat for at least 10 minutes and been (in my opinion)
subliminally preached to about Christianity – this is not an
issue. I understand that the growing secularisation of the
UK is affecting the amount of those attending churches and
that, in the perspective of Christian believers, is a worrying
thought. However, the one thing I’ve, unfortunately, not
seen during my years here, for example, is someone –
anyone – coming in around the time of Eid and enlightening
the youth of the values taught within Islam. *Perhaps that’s
due to the fact that we are located right next to a church and
it is simply convenient. Nevertheless, in a school that takes
pride in its diversity, I believe it appropriate for all religions
to be promoted – of course, this is just a suggestion and my
opinion.
*I am only using Islam as an example, other religions
should, preferably, also be considered.
“Diversity is about all of us, and about us having to figure out how to walk through this world together.”

Sixth Form Book Reviews
All The Lights We Cannot See- Anthony Doerr
Everything about this book attracted me to it, the narrative,
the narrator, and the storyline. The way it is written is easy to
read and the book is fast paced. Not only do you fall in love
with the characters, you fall in love with the setting. You will
remember the characters long after you’ve finished the book.
The way that the storylines interlink just makes me want to
finish the book then read it all over again.
– Henna Aslam
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
I read this book for part of my English Literature course. I
didn’t realise when I first chose to study this book that I
would love it so much! It is about a girl called Jane who is or-
phaned as a child and it follows her journey throughout life-
she falls in love, she suffers, she picks herself up again. But it
is not merely that simple. There are twists and turns. The
passion in this book is something I particularly love; you can
really feel the emotion through the page. You will definitely
be able to identify with Jane and as a result she is a character
that will stay with you, long after you put the book down. <3
– Olivia Sutherland
Lovely Bones – Alice Sebold
The story of Susie Salmon is one of hope and love. Despite
her tragic and horrible death, you learn the importance of
trust and compassion. The book evolves you as a person as
you experience growth through witnessing Susie’s strength
and love for her family and friends.

In 1823, a fur-trapping expedition in the Ameri-
can Midwest is attacked by a Native American
tribe. Their quest to reach safety is complicated
by a bear attack that leaves tracker Hugh Glass
(DiCaprio) close to death. DiCaprio's raw per-
formance helps elevate what could have been
just another man-versus-nature drama. Di-

Sports News Transfer deadline day
There has been much controversy around the Trans-
fer deadline day and manager changes, one of the
biggest stories was where Pep Guardiola would end
up with Louis van Gaal’s job at risk with poor re-
sults .The biggest news was when Pep Guardiola
agreed a deal with Manchester City ,this was a big
shock to United fans who were hoping the Span-
iard would take over from Louis Van Gaal .Pep has
agreed a 3 year Deal to Take over as Head coach
starting the 16/17 season .
Saido Berahino to Newcastle, Stoke or Spurs?
Now there were a lot of issues surrounding this young
player in the last window as he sent out a tweet saying he
would never play under Jeremy Peace again after he
wouldn’t sell the young player despite interest from
Spurs. Berahino’s name was once again thrown
around this window with rumours that he may
join Newcastle, Stoke or Spurs. Steve McClaren
has already placed a bid of £21m for Saido but it
was rejected and the rumours were put to bed
within the last hour of the window when the
young man sent out a tweet which made clear
where his future lay-
‘Everyone waiting once again for the silly little spoilt
boy to make same mistake so here you go.
Goodnight all and thanks for the support❤️’
— Saido Berahino (@SBerahino) February 1, 2016
With 12 months on his contract dose he leave in the next
window or wait his contract out and leave on a free after
the 12 months ?

Make-up of the month
Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder - Golden Light
This is my favourite because it is very pigmented and easy to put on as you don’t have to apply so much of it; it lasts a long time so it’s worth the money. It comes
very compact with a mirror inside so you can apply on the go!
Price: £28.50 - Henna
MAC lipstick - CAPTIVE
It is a satin finish lipstick meaning it is very moisturising with GREAT colour pigment. It is a lovely natural pink and for this reason it is my go to everyday
lipstick.
Price: £15.50

Matte Taupe Lipstick - MAC
My favourite make up product is the Matte Taupe Lipstick by MAC. I really like using this product because it is stylish, stands out and can be
worn during the day and on occasion!
Price: £15.50
-Tyler
L’Oreal Paris Telescopic Mascara
I have been using the telescopic mascara for many years now and I love the product, you don’t
get many types of mascara with the perfect brush but with this mascara you can separate each
eyelash with just one swipe. The wand is slim and has a good grip and curl to the eyelashes
when applied. The mascara makes the eyelashes look larger and stays on all day without crum-
bling or coming off.
Price: £10.99

What it is: The new and fresh clothing line which will include a very
broad range of clothes. Whatever your personal preference there will
be something suitable for you. The clothing will be up to date, spon-

EU Referendum
For those of you who may not know David Cameron, our respected
(debatable) prime minister, is seriously considering leaving the EU. A
referendum is said to take place before the end of the year. By 2017 is
when they are considering leaving the EU. Even considering this is not a
good idea.
To think that there are 3.5 million jobs connected to the EU and Camer-
on wants to leave is hideous; that’s 1 in 10 jobs. Equal pay for men and
women is treasured in EU law, as are bans on discrimination by age, race
or sexual orientation. This benefits Britain and British people who live
in other EU countries. Trade between the different EU countries is
cheaper and easier but here David Cameron wants to go and actually
waste money that does no need to be wasted or money that can be used
on more important things (hint: NHS).
Is a country better off alone or when it’s united with 28 other countries?
I think everyone can answer that one.

Science Plasma – the fourth state of matter.
We aren’t talking about plasma found in your blood, same name different stuff. So what
are plasmas? Well as we have all been told there are 3 states of matter. However, this is
a lie, there are 4 states of matter. What’s a matter? I don’t know, what’s a matter with
you? All jokes aside, a matter is anything that has mass. Your hand is made of matter,
just like the rest of you.
Solids, liquids and gases are all states of matter just as you will have been told during
science lessons. However, there is actually a fourth state of matter called plasma, if you
hadn’t guessed from the contents of the first paragraph. Let me give you an idea of how
big the lie you’ve been told is. Solids, liquids and gases only make up 1% of the observa-
ble universe while plasmas make up the other 99%. Now, why aren’t we taught about
this plasma in school? Well plasma is not all that common on earth. Some examples of
common plasmas on earth are lightning, florescent bulbs, auroras and neon signs.
While an example that everyone would know is the sun.
On the NASA website it describes the sun as “a hot ball of gas made up mostly of Hydrogen. The Sun is so hot
that most of the gas is actually plasma, the fourth state of matter” (found on the website
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/themis/auroras/sun_earth_connect.html, if you want more infor-
mation). But you can’t say that it is a gas because most of the gas is plasma. Plasma and gas are completely
different states of matter. So this description really needs to be revised. The major difference between plas-
ma and gas is how well they conduct electricity; a gas is a good insulator and won’t conduct electricity while
plasma can be as good as a metal in terms of conductivity. Plasmas’ are such good conductors because they
contain positively charged ions and electrons, both of which can move freely to transfer electricity.
Since plasmas contain these positive and negative charges they can be confined within electric fields and
will move freely parallel to the field it will also move the field if forcibly moved perpendicular to the field.
Plasmas generally require a large start up energy when created in the same way as in florescent bulbs, usu-
ally 33 kilovolts per centimeter, but once generated only require a tenth of the energy. Also as plasma in-
creases in energy it becomes more viscous and can physically push against each other and other objects.
So, what should you take away from this? It doesn’t really matter. However, if you like anime you can take
away the fact that if you could control the electricity in your body you could perform the Kamehameha
from Dragon Ball which, of course, is very cool

Erased
Erased is a new anime that débuted in 2016. It immediately achieved a
4.9/5.0 on crunchy roll. The main story features around Satoru Fujinuma
who has a special ability named ‘revival.’ This in turn allows him to sense a potential dan-
ger, e.g. a boy running in front of a truck therefore presenting him with the opportunity to
save a life if he wishes to. His personality leads him to jeopardise his life many times. He is
later given the opportunity to go back in time and make a difference to what potentially
causes him to lose his last relative; his mother.
DB SUPER
DB super is one of the most popular anime series of all-time since
the 1980s. The new season which deputed after almost two decades
is now featuring Goku and Vegeta alongside the rest of the z-fighters being challenged by
new villains, this time from a different universe!
HAIKYUU
If you enjoy volleyball then Haikyuu is the anime for you. The second season
features Karasuno high school participating in a tournament that is packed with the best
high schools in Tokyo competing to be the best and impressing scouts that are recruiting
for the national team.
NARUTO SHIPPUDEN
Alongside DB super, Naruto has proven to be a masterpiece. The story
currently features an alternative story from the Jiraya scrolls. The ninja’s
from Konohamru will soon engage Madara again before entering the new season featuring
a time skip where our favourite ‘’hyperactive knuckle-head’’ ninja Naruto becomes the
Hokage and the story continues with the new generation of Shinobi based around Boruto,
Naruto’s son.

5 Super tips for a smoother University life!
Student, 20, is a second-year politics student at Keele University
"It's important to venture outside the campus: look at the costs of buses, off-campus ac-
commodation, the shops. See if the environment suits your personality. If you're an
outgoing person, look to see if the area has a great nightlife. Or if you are like me, you
may like a museum or the countryside. Leicester University was my first choice, but I
ended up going to my insurance, Keele. It's a good idea to think about rents: someone I
know at another university is paying £140 a week, while I'm paying £50. Look at the ar-
ea's property prices on websites like Zoopla before applying."
Check out work experience opportunities!
"See if the course or uni offers you any internship or placement opportunities. I
was particularly drawn to Hull's one-year Westminster internship pro-
gramme, which meant I spent a year working with the shadow education
secretary. As a result, I know I want to work in education policy when I
graduate."

Student, 21, is studying biomedical sciences at St George's, University of London
"The advice I would give would be to go to the open days and ask plenty of questions about university
life, the course and support services. Chat to students for some honest first-hand experience of study-
ing there. It may seem a hassle if your university is far from home, but the train ticket to visit is
cheaper than dropping out after one term."
Student, 19, is studying multimedia journalism at Bournemouth University
"Make sure your number one course covers modules that are suitable for you – browse through the
course outline so you know what to expect. I wish I'd realised that a module title is one thing, but the
'unit guide' for each section is really where the information lies. Had I known this, jumping from tele-
vision and radio to media law modules wouldn't have been such a surprise."
Student, 19, is studying drama and English literature at the University of East Anglia
Pick something you love!
"You'll find that you work harder if you're passionate about your degree. Joint courses are also great
because you get the best out of both subjects."
Careers advisors at Highcrest Academy-
The sixth formers are welcome to request an interview with either Hardip or myself (Samantha) at any time. We are in school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The best way is for them to either pop in and see us or ask Miss Seal in the library or Mr Shaw. Our website: www.connexionsbucks.org.uk has information on options, job/
apprenticeship vacancies and a CV writer which they can use. School has a subscription to the www.fasttomato.com quiz so students can use this. There is also a subscription
to the careers information leaflets at www.eclips-online.co.uk

Struggling to pick a Uni to apply to? Not sure which course is right for you? Weighing up your career op-
tions? Book yourself on to a UCAS exhibition to find out the answer to these questions and more!
The next UCAS exhibition is in Manchester on the 2nd March…Always try and have some questions lined up.
After all, this is your opportunity to find out more information about the Uni and the course! Here are five
questions to get you started:
1. What grades or UCAS points do I need?
2. What modules can I choose from?
3. What is the local area like?
4. Are there halls or other accommodation nearby?
5. How many students get jobs at the end of the course?
You’re going to be spending at least three years of your life there, so make sure you get all the information you
need!
UCAS info
UCAS Extra starts on the 25th Feb- if you have not had any offers from your five university choices
you can apply through UCAS Extra and possibly find another choice- check out the UCAS web-
site for more info.
You should receive all your offers by 31st March, you must respond by 4th May.
If you submitted your application by the 15ht January deadline, then the 5th May is the deadline which
Universities will have made you an offer by. If they have not made you an offer by then, that choice is
automatically made unsuccessful.
Socialise on week nights when it is cheaper- check out specific deals you can get with your student
card at cafes, restaurants, cinemas and bars. Make sure the nights aren’t too late and to make
up the time at the weekend if you need to!
Working part-time is great to keep yourself afloat and shift-work is the easiest to fit in around your
Uni timetable– Try and work at a cafe rather than doing bar work as nights are not as late and
you can get shifts in and around daytime lectures when bars tend to be closed. Also, some busi-
nesses may let you take lunches home that haven’t sold on the day, bonus J
