Our chamber members are as diverse as the city itself. They represent businesses of all sizes, industries and viewpoints. Together, we are shaping Slaton’s business
environment and making the city a wonderful place to live, work and grow.
A Brief History…The Santa Fe Railway founded Slaton as a division point to service trains traveling
throughout northwest Texas. The town was named for O. L. Slaton, an area banker who was instrumental in
establishing the right-of-way here. Designed in a wagon wheel fashion, similar to Washington D.C., Slaton held
its official opening day on June 15, 1911. People came from all over the area to purchase land to build their
homes and businesses.
Slaton grew rapidly with railroad company employees and their families
joining the growing farming community. Lumber, hardware, dry goods,
groceries and confectionaries popped up. A cotton gin and mill opened.
Slaton soon had banks, hotels, a local newspaper and a movie theater.
The school officially opened its doors on October 1st with 50 pupils.
Churches were founded while meeting
outdoors sitting on rough boards and nail
kegs.
Slaton became a self-supporting town.
This is only the beginning.
