From the Vicar
About this time five years ago I was sitting down to prepare my first Compass. John and I were settling into the Vicarage and I was just beginning to get to know people and how things worked. In that letter I wrote how blessed we felt to be here. That sense of thankfulness has never changed and it is with very mixed feelings that I write my final Compass letter. While we are looking forward to beginning a new season in our lives, and having more time to spend with our family, we are very sad indeed to be leaving. It has been the most enormous privilege and joy for us to have spent the last few years among you. You have become very dear to us. The sense of community in Ellesmere and the loving care shown to one another are precious. I have constantly been humbled and grateful for the contributions of so many of you in maintaining our worship and in caring for our buildings and grounds. I’m not going to try to name everyone but I do want to thank all of you. Over the years I have been grateful for the support and guidance of wonderful Church Wardens, Treasurers and Worship Leaders and for assistance from Jade Arnold, our Parish Administrator. This Parish is fortunate to have astute, enthusiastic, resourceful leaders. The position of Vicar has been advertised and applications close on the 18th of October. It is hoped that the parish will have a new Vicar before the end of the year. The Bishop has decide not to appoint an interim Priest-in-charge. I believe that this is a sign of the confidence the Bishop has in the parish and it’s leadership. From 13 October, the Church Wardens, Mike Morley-Bunker and Murray Stephens, are the people to go to for assistance. Don’t be afraid for the future or of change. God has brought the parish safely thus far and has a plan for the future. Continue to cherish one another, work together in the Spirit of Christ, and in all things give thanks. May God continue to bless the Parish of Ellesmere and until we meet again, (and I hope we do), may God hold each of you in
the palm of his hands. Lynne Horwood

Sedgemere Celebrates Spring Despite the beginning of Daylight Saving and the
Parish Fair the day before, over 50 parishioners
gathered at St Mark’s Church, Sedgemere on the
29th of September to praise God and celebrate
spring. It was a beautiful morning and the church
and grounds were looking their best. After the
worship, a lavish morning tea was held in the
grounds.
Dunsandel The Anglican Service in September included a
moving farewell to Rev’d Lynne. She was
presented with a beautiful daphne and a gift from
the Dunsandel congregation. After the service
Lynne and john joined members of the
congregation for lunch at the Store.

Synod update
Bishop Peter has provided this summary of
business enacted at Synod this year.
We amended our statute on Local Ministry
and Mission in order to make it easier to
form a vestry when a congregation departs
a parish, and to form an ecumenical
agreement with another denomination
We also amended our financial regulations
to clarify terms on which a parish may
secure a mortgage from CPT and to give
greater flexibility, when required, re setting
of quota
We confirmed General Synod Statute 751
concerning a change to the declarations we
make when taking up office in the church
We resolved to hold annual conferences for
churchwardens and treasurers
We agreed to comprehensively revise all
our Diocesan statutes in a timely manner
We committed to raise $200k for our
Missions’ target
We agreed to review guidelines for
vicarages
We will look into whether we can authorise
our Diocesan Manager to make executive-
type decisions where parishes wish to use
small sums of money from their trust funds
We agreed to consider practical action
from the Bishop’s Address and to embark
on a series of actions in respect of response
to Climate Change and Ecological
Emergency.
Not resolved, but left on the table for further
consideration before next Synod were two
motions on funding of ministry and mission
through better deployment of assets and a
motion on listening to and understanding the
Rainbow community within our Diocese.

Southbridge Artist Rodney Wells was the guest speaker at
Soup and Chat in September. He shared a
number of his books and provided a fascinating
insight into his wonderful work. We also
admired the castle Peter Mansfield is making for
Southbridge Play Centre. Soup and Chat will
resume next autumn.
The engineers’ report on St James Church has
been received. Indications are that St James will
require some strengthening at a future date.

We are going to need a new Treasurer...
Since his return from overseas, our wonderful
Treasurer, Alastair Wood, has indicated that he
will not be available to continue as Treasurer
next year. If you are able to help or know of
anyone who might be willing to take on this
very important role please speak to one of the
Wardens. Experience with using Xero would be
an advantage.
Alastair would be more than happy to assist
with learning the ropes.
