Greetings from the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics.As an undergraduate student who graduated from thiscollege, I had never imaged during those days that one day Iwill serve my Alma mater. Life is so unpredictable and full ofsurprises. Today I deem myself privileged to be a part of thisgreat institute.A new year brings a fresh start and infinite possibilities, ourgreat university has recently obtained the tag of institute ofeminence. Under the tutelage of our Pro Vice Chancellor Dr.Surendra Shetty and Dean Dr. Dilip G Naik, our college hasreached great heights. All the activities conducted in ourcollege that include the teaching programs, research,
publications, extra-curricular activities, community servicescontribute towards achieving the standards set by ouruniversity.The department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodonticshas been given the responsibility of designing and compilingthis issue of Communiqué which showcases the eventsorganized by our college. The Certificate Course in Minor Oral Surgery wasinaugurated on 1st September, 2018. Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Manipal College of Dental Sciences,
Mangalore successfully launched the inaugural program of dental surgical microscope at Attavar. The
microscope was inaugurated on 28th January, 2019 by Dr. Y Bharat Shetty, BJP President MangaloreCity North, Dr. Poornima Baliga, Pro VC, MAHE, Dr. Shivcharan Shetty, DCI member, Dr. Surendra
Shetty, Pro VC, Mangalore Campus, Dr. Dilip G. Naik, Dean of MCODS, Mangalore. Dr. Ashita Uppoor,Dr. Premlatha Shetty, Associate Deans, MCODS, Mangalore. Faculty members and post graduate
students from other respective departments were present during the inauguration. The dentalsurgical microscope was the brainchild of Dr. Kundabala M which was received with the supported
infrastructural grant by VGST, Karnataka State Government.

CHILDRENS DAY CELEBRATIONS AT DEPARTMENT OF
PAEDODONTICS
Twenty children who visit the dental clinic regularly, participated in the program on the occasion ofChildren’s day on 14th November, 2018 with their parents. The children were made comfortable bycreating a playful and friendly environment. The department was decorated with balloons andribbons. Music welcomed the little guests as they arrived. The program included free dentalscreening and treatment, which was followed by an entertainment session for the special guests ofthe occasion. They were seated in groups and enjoyed the occasion to the core.

A workshop called “I-TOP Recall” by Curaden was conducted for the Staff and Postgraduates ofDept. of Periodontology MCODS, Mangalore on 16th November, 2018 at MCODS, Attavar. Thefocus was to emphasize on the Touch 2 Teach Practices and recalibration of proper techniques oftooth brushing and use of interdental brushes. In a first of its kind, the Department of Oral &Maxillofacial Surgery, MCODS, Mangaloreconducted a Continuing ProfessionalDevelopment program MAX Facts 2019 - HairTransplantation, on 11th January, 2019. The guestspeaker was Dr. Sainath Matsa, a certified andprominent practitioner specializing in the nichefield of hair restoration surgery. The talk wasfollowed by a day of hands-on workshop on theadvanced, minimally invasive FUE hair transplanttechnique on scalp and face.

SECOND INTERNATIONAL IZC BS HANDS ON PROGRAM
The Department of Orthodontics, ManipalCollege of Dental Sciences, Mangaloreconducted the 2nd International IZC BS Hands onProgram on 25th and 26th February,2019. Dr. Vijay Baswa is an alumnus of theDepartment of Orthodontics, Manipal College ofDental Sciences, Mangalore was the coursefaculty. Dr. Baswa maintains a private practice
in Kuwait and specializes in treatment ofcomplicated skeletal malocclusions using IZC andBS. The program saw 20 delegates most of whowere experienced clinicians from across thecountry. The participants were engaged inclinical sessions, lectures and live placement ofIZC and BS implants on patients and 3D models.
HANDS ON TRAINING IN DAMON TECHNIQUE
The Department of Orthodontics andDentofacial Orthopedics in association withthe Centre for Advanced Dental Education(CADE) and MCODS, Mangalore successfullyconducted two-day hands on workshop on3rd and 4th December, 2018 on the Damontechnique. The resource person was Dr. JeanRenee Van Becelaere from Canada, arenowned clinician with several years ofexperience with the Damon technique andinternational speaker for ORMCO Companysince 2010.

The Faculty of this department have to their credit Research grants, Research awards, Scientific
publications in National and International Journals and have authored textbooks. The curriculum of
Conservative and Endodontics for undergraduate and postgraduate learning is innovative, expansive
and interactive with the latest models of teaching methodologies. This department runs two
certificate programmes :
1. Certificate Course in Restorative Dentistry – One year full time course that trains the candidate in
Endodontic and Restorative procedures. They are acclimatized to be general dentists.
2. Certificate Course in Modern Endodontics – A 5 day program which concentrates entirely on
modern endodontic treatment concepts using latest technologies and materials. Thorough
knowledge on various equipments will be provided like apex locators, rotary instrumentation,
ultrasonic treatments for various cases, etc.
The Department got renovated in 2018 and now works as a fully air conditioned department at both
the campuses.
