HARMONY DAY AT DUVAL
Top of the Hi l l Newsletter of Duval High School
Duval celebrated Harmony Day on Friday, 21 March. Students were
asked to dress in their national costume to celebrate our cultural diversity.
The message of the day was ‘everyone belongs’.
Our diversity makes Australia a great place to live. Harmony Day is a cele-
bration of our cultural diversity — a day of cultural respect for everyone
who calls Australia home. Harmony Day is held every year to coincide
with the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Racial Dis-
crimination.

P&C NEWS
It was wonderful to welcome new faces to our
meeting on 16 March. During the meeting we
were treated to a school tour to inspect some of
the resources that have been purchased using
P&C funds over the past year, including: a hi-tech
storage and charging media trolley in the
Library; chairs, tables and lounges in Senior
Common Room; and a full wall map in Ms
Verwayen’s geography classroom.
We also had a short presentation from Ms
Verwayen, who brought some suggestions from
the Student Representative Council (SRC)
regarding the canteen’s menu and transaction
options. It was decided that the SRC would
conduct a school-wide survey to provide further
information.
We have already filled Ms Noonan’s request to
pay for carpeting which overlays and protects the
new special flooring in the Dance Studio. We also
decided to purchase two new BBQs, which will be
available for use by the school as well as the
P&C.
The AGM is scheduled for 26 April (Term 2,
Week 1) at 6pm in the school office. It will be
followed by a regular monthly meeting. All are
welcome and encouraged to attend. For more
information, contact Susie Winter (Secretary):

DUVAL PREFECT GROUP UPDATE
The Prefects have been busy selling raffle tickets
to raise funds for Beyond Blue. The prize is a
trailer load of red gum generously donated by
Mr Conrad Post.
On Saturday morning, Stuart and Chris helped Mr
Post to split the wood and load the trailer in
preparation for the Markets in the Mall on the
next day. Even though the weather was not great
the Prefects managed to raise $385.00 in ticket
sales.
The Prefects will be selling tickets at the next
Markets in the Mall on Sunday, 30 April 2017.
They are also available at the front office if you
would like to support this worthy cause. Tickets
are $2.00 each or three for $5.00.

CANTEEN NEWS
- HARMONY WEEK AT THE SNACK-SHACK -
Throughout the last week, the Canteen commem-
orated Harmony Week by serving a range of in-
ternational dishes from countries represented by
students from Duval:
MONDAY — Egyptian Kofta with Pasta
TUESDAY — Filipino Chicken Stir Fry
WEDNESDAY — Red Day (Aussie Treats &
Sweets)
THURSDAY — Ukrainian Goulash
FRIDAY — Nigerian Fried Rice.
Students really enjoyed trying out these different
tastes and flavours; with the Nigerian Fried Rice
being nominated a crowd favourite!
Special thanks to Belinda, Katy, and Suellen for
all their effort in preparing the special menus.

INTRODUCING…..
NEW STAFF MEMBER:
MATT MULLIGAN
- English Faculty -
My earliest memory is . . . of a shower curtain
with goldfish printed on it. Mum said we moved
out of this house before I was two.
At school I . . . didn’t have a Facebook account
and never took a selfie.
I wish I’d never worn . . . when I was 17 I cut off a
pair of faded jeans, but left the back to sort of
hang as a train. To top that off, I had cut a second
pair of jeans off at the thigh, then I had put the
upside down legs on, securing them above my
knees, fashioning a rough pair of flares. So,
between top and bottom denim, there were about
6 inches of skin. If you can’t imagine this, don’t
try!
My mother always told me . . . “There’s no such
word as ‘can’t.”
I wish I had . . . moss green velvet curtains
I wish I hadn’t . . . in the words of Edith Piaf
“Non, rien de rien, non, je ne regrette rien” (I have
no regrets)
My happiest moment was . . . after my most
recent trip overseas I got off the plane in
Armidale, looked North at my beloved
mountains, and my eyes welled with tears. I love
my home!
My last meal would be . . . oysters Kilpatrick and
a big prawn cocktail.
I’m very bad at . . . speaking Icelandic
If I were a car I’d be . . . a dark green 1922
“Silver Ghost” Rolls Royce.
CREATING DISCOVERY WORKSHOP
On Wednesday, 22 March, Duval hosted a
wonderful 3-hour workshop run by Richard Short,
Chief Storyteller from the Sydney Story Factory.
This engaging 3 hours focussed on the
imaginative writing section of the HSC and was a
great way to engage our Year 12 English
students. We were also able to invite some
Armidale High students to share the experience.
The previous evening we hosted a writing
workshop for local English teachers.

YEAR 7 GERMAN
Year 7 German have recently been making
Osterbaum or Easter Trees. Twigs are decorated
with hollowed-out eggs that Year 7 students
painted and then glazed with glue. It’s traditional
to create an Osterbaum in German-speaking
countries to celebrate new growth after the long,
dark winter.
The hollowing-out of the eggs was a little messy,
but we are enjoying the finished product in our
Language classroom.

YEAR 10 GEOGRAPHY
Two Year 10 geography classes recently went on
a small but beneficial excursion to the Armidale
Waste Management Facility as part of out unit of
work on waste management.
We were given a tour through the facility, and
saw recycling being separated by hand and
machine; one-tonne blocks of paper and
cardboard destined for recycling into new
products; and the community recycling centre
which allows Armidale residents to recycle
everything from polystyrene, cooking oil,
batteries, chemicals, car tyres and light bulbs.
We learnt that the Facility is a very efficient
operation, with 96% of recycling collected from
10,000 households being fit for manufacture into
new products as part of a 'closed loop' system. It
was very interesting to see what actually
happened to our waste products and has
contributed a lot to our studies.
A big thank you to staff at the Facility, and our
teachers Ms Simes and Mrs Mitchell for
organising the excursion.
Olive Clark & Rachael Jones
HARMONY DAY HAIKU
Shane Flint (Year 7) really churns out Haiku poems! This is a Japanese form of poetry consisting of a strict syllable count within 3 lines.
Shane followed the traditional Haiku form in the poem on the left, allowed himself a little poetic licence in the one on the right, then broke out into free form in the one below!
He was inspired by the school’s Harmony Day celebrations of ethnic diversity on 24 March.

DANCE STUDIO UPGRADE
Recently we had a new dance floor put in the studio/stage, funding assistance from the P&C. It's a professional quality floor similar to the flooring used in professional company studios and touring performances. I believe we are the only facility in the region to have this resource.
The floor is a specialised rubber/vinyl surface and is taped down to the floor. Carpet was also purchased to protect the flooring in this shared space. It has rubber backing to eliminate a slip hazard.
Our dance program has grown this year, and this resource is of particular significance to HSC students. A massive Thank You to our GA, Wayne Gaw, for his help with installation. The students and I are very grateful for this incredible classroom resource!

NATIONAL RIMFIRE BENCHREST
CHAMPIONSHIPS
Three of our DHS students travelled to Coffs
Harbour on 8 March to compete in the National
event held over five days. Tiffany Tarrant (Year
10) and Lachie Williamson (Year 10) are both
members of our Duval Rifle Team, while Patrick
Simpson (Year 7) was shooting in his first National
Competition. The Championships attracted over
80 shooters Australia wide, including 10 juniors.
All three students shot extremely well throughout
the competition, with Tiffany placing third in the
IRB event and receiving two “screamer” patches
for the heavy class event, which means she shot
two five shot groups under 0.199”. Patrick was
awarded first placed junior in the two-day heavy
class event. Lachie narrowly missed out on third
and fourth placings as well.
Congratulations to all three students on their
achievements.

INTERCLUB SHOOT COMPETITION
On Sunday, 19 March, the Interclub shoot
between Armidale and Glen Innes was held at
Armidale. Both Tiffany Tarrant (Year 10) and
Patrick Simpson (Year 7) competed in the event,
which consisted of grouping and hunter targets.
Tiffany was awarded a gold medal in each event
with Patrick receiving a silver in both events.
Well done to our talented junior shooters for
proudly representing Duval!

DUVAL STUDENTS DOING “WALK FOR KIDS WITH CANCER”
Duval student Annie Winter (left, Year 10), together
with her sister Alice (right, Year 12 — 2016), is plan-
ning to walk 26km around Sydney Harbour on 26
March in the Bob ‘Tug’ Wilson Walk For Kids With
Cancer to raise funds for Westmead Children’s Hos-
pital.
Annie and Alice are walking as part of ‘Team Anya’,
in support of their sister, Anya Zuber, who has recov-
ered from 18 months of treatment at Westmead’s
Cancer Centre for Children after being diagnosed
with osteosarcoma.
